Big Time Adolescence was really good on Hulu.

I never read any mention of "A Simple Favor", I remember when I saw commercials I thought that might be good. I watched on EPIX and it's worth seeing even if just for the two leading ladies, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. I gave it a 7 out of 10, it's reminded of Knives Out, in the fact that I was ready for it to end way before it ended. It seemed to keep going on and on with too many twists. I gave it a 7 because the overall premise is good, the acting is good, the sets and outfits are good, and if it have been shortened about 20 minutes it would of worked better. Just like Knives Out, there is about 7 twists in the last hour. The first hour is the setup and it really good, sort of like American Beauty setup. Then comes all the twists and turns, maybe if they had eliminated about 3 of them and 20 minutes screen time it would of been a 8 or 9. |
I watched X Men: Dark Phoenix on HBO.
So did Jean Grey have the Phoenix force at the end of X Men: Apocalypse or did she only get it at the beginning of Dark Phoenix? |

Underwater ended up being a legitimately entertaining thriller/creature feature. I'd highly recommend it.
|
Underwater was pretty dope. I had no idea that Kristen Stewart had such a smokin hot bod
https://66.media.tumblr.com/a34e1b49...9a49ee65b.gifv I also watched Vivarium last night. It was really interesting but I don't feel like the story went any where. It's like a Twilight Zone episode but stretched out way too long. |

Definitely an interesting twist on Driving Miss Daisy. :D |
Molly’s Game came up on my Netflix suggestions. I hadn’t heard of it before so I thought WTF let’s watch it. I knew nothing about the story but It’s a pretty solid watch.
Conclusions: 1. Jessica Chastain is hot. Full stop. 2. Idris Elba is amazing. Dude just ATE scenery and was by far the most compelling character despite the most compelling part of the story being Molly’s story. I don’t know what kind of accent he’s rolling with but it’s intentional and well done. One wouldn’t think too much about it unless you’d seen both Luther and the Wire. I don’t think there’s anything he can’t do. 3. Aaron Sorkin was involved. I can’t remember as a writer, director, producer or what. Doesn’t matter. Whatever it is it’s the same as it normally is with me and Sorkin. The dialogue is good and engaging. There are some really compelling character moments in there. But when it comes to the climax what Sorkin believes to be moving and compelling misses the mark for me. Happens with a lot of stuff Sorkin is involved in. Maybe I’m just a dweeb and Sorkin is the model of compelling storytelling. But the bottom line is he has all this build up that I really enjoy then at the essential moment I think to myself ... Ok, and...? Nonetheless it’s worth your time. I’d recommend it. 4. Costner’s performance hit. Maybe it’s because I have a daughter. But I think it’s possible he’s just a fat better actor than he used to be. His performance in the Superman movie and this one hit home far more than anything he did early. |
Extraction (new action film on Netflix) is wild as hell. Keep in mind, there is little to no character development at all but the action sequences rock imo. Thor killed a shit load of Indian gangsters in this haha

Jumanji: The Next Level.
Don't bother. Karen Gillian is smoking hot however the movie is just boring and predictable. |
Technically a movie, based on a TV show, now on an online service no one probably has, . . . but keep your eyes peeled for a fun quarantine diversion

Been avoiding it for over a month with On Demand... The Hunt
“$20 for a rental?! Get ****ed!” But got bored enough to pull the trigger tonight, 34 minutes in right now and the controversy was blown waaay out of proportion The good guys are the so called deplorables, it’s total camp and not serious at all... enjoying it so far, but still... $20? get bent |

It's a fine-line between ham-fisted and black humor and this one walked it. The jokes were mostly funny if you remembered to laugh. But if you forget to laugh, it's easy to get caught in 'hey!wait!! not fair!!' then you take a breath and chuckle. The unfairness of the jokes was part of the joke, which will probably only make sense when you've experienced it firsthand. And it was sporadically inventive enough, with both the commentary and the gore, to keep things bopping along without getting too mired down. If you find yourself in a mood to dissect things and find meaning, it's probably not the right time for you to watch it, because you can drive yourself a bit mental taking it the least bit serious. But if you're in the mood for dark humor, it delivers surprisingly effectively, . . . at least for the 90-minute runtime. |
I thought it was ok, Betty Gilpin was pretty good with her comic relief though.

Far from a new movie, but this is a great essay on what I've long held as the Continential Divide between old Hollywood and Modern Hollywood.
I'm, like, 50-60% more likely to like a movie made after B&C, compared to before, even among the 'classics.' <iframe width="949" height="534" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0wI4HXBH9Yc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

****in' Apatow, he's such a beta asshole, but he has an ear for story and a knack for casting.
If you told me 'Pete Davidson playing an orphan son of a firefighter,' I'd say 'hard pass. Too on the nose.' If you say, 'Bill Burr and Steve Buscemi try to turn him into a grownup,' I'd say 'where is it? Is it out now? Will it be out next week? When!?!?!?!' <iframe width="949" height="534" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/azkVr0VUSTA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I watched the original Evil Dead last week.
They definitely went over-the-top with the gore. It seemed like they were trying to flex their practical effects as much as possible. I enjoyed it enough. It had some creepy moments with the demonic voices and music.. It's also easy to tell that it was the main inspiration for Cabin In The Woods. |
Saw Hustlers, it was ok. Enjoyed staring at Constance Wu.

The Invisible Man (2020) is fantastic. A tad long and more synth in the mix are my only minor complaints. Other than that, it was filmed, scored, and acted to perfection. Have never really cared much for Elisabeth Moss but she killed that role. Felt like they thought of everything, it was like watching a greatest hits of horror/thriller tricks wrapped into one movie.
I sincerely hope to oneday catch this on a tube television inside a dive bar while getting an afternoon drunk on. Its that level of greatness. |
Rented the Invisible Man last night, and it sucks out LOUD... turned it off about halfway through, during the scene where she crawls into the attic
It’s a snail paced, boring piece of shit... also, why is this rich and powerful genius so obsessed with that ugly ass broad anyway? |
Watched Ad Astra last night. Visually it was amazing, the rest seemed like a super long cologne commercial. Like Pitt's hold my absinthe moment to Depp's Sauvage. Or a one up to a McConaughey Lincoln commercial.
Ad Astra for men |

Watched Knives Out on Amazon Prime last night. It's a fine movie, neither great nor bad, but Ana de Armas eyes and lips move it into the recommended category for me.

I really enjoyed the king of Staten island. I'm a big fan of dramedies so that helped, I thought the character development was really good.

Rented JoJo Rabbit with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the film.

I watched The Professional for the first time in a hell of a long time. It’s a really good rewatch. I recommend it.
So Natalie Portman is 2 years older than me. I was probably the age she was when she filmed when I first saw it. The viewing experience as a 37 year old is far far different than it was when I was 13 or however old I was. Watching 12 year old Natalie Portman run around in, frankly, not much and trying to seduce Leon is way different now than it was then. Awkwardness aside, the movie is a remarkably interesting look at the effects of traumatic childhood. And the idea of living for something (someone in this case). It’s really good. REALLY good. I’d suggest to anybody to rewatch it. |
Old Guard is a good start to a superhero franchise I will enjoy.
|
Palm Springs is light fun fare with decent performances.
It's a new take on Groundhog Day, but has plenty new and different to offer. Samberg is hard not to like, and Miloti is very very easy to like. The premise isn't entirely new, but the execution is fresh and fun. Keep it in mind for when you want 90 minutes of enjoyment. |
Watched The Outpost yesterday. I thought it was pretty good. Fight scenes were really well done. Hadn't previously heard anything about it. But it was definitely worth a watch.

Felt Doctor Sleep was enjoyable for the most part. The throwback nods to The Shining were a little hokey but it does enough to stand on its own.
Plus Rebecca Ferguson does it for me. |

Yesterday I watched 3 movies on my day off that were teed up on my list:
1. The Post (2017) Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6294822/ Liked it much better than I thought. Really excellent story and backdrop of the time. Only thing I noticed is that the printing press had features that did not exist back then. (I used to be a pressmen and my father worked at the Washington Post back in the early 70's) 8/10 2. 45 Years (2015) Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3544082/ Story set in England with an elderly couple who are ready to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary when an event from one of their pasts starts to change the dynamic of their marriage and what they each perceive of each other. Started a little slow but really enjoyed it. 7/10 3. The Lighthouse (2109) Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7984734/ This film was really something unique in many respects. It was a little hard to understand the dialogue at times with Defoe having a heavy accent but it mellowed out as the movie progressed. Just a completely different story on so many levels. Performances were great and it has some weird shit in it all the way through. Just the two of them for most of the film and the back and forth between them as things digress is pretty wild. An international co-production of the United States and Canada, the film was shot in black-and-white with a nearly square 1.19:1 aspect ratio. I think this is a film you will either love or hate. Not gonna have people on the fence with this one. 8/10 |

Watched 2 more yesterday:
1. 23 Hours to Kill (2020) Jerry Seinfeld His new comedy standup in years has it's moments but seems like he was trying too hard and for the first time on stage, he seemed to be pulling out some blue language (for him) that sounded too silly coming from a guy who never used a swear word before on stage. 6/10 2. The Wrong Missy (2020) David Spade, Lauren Lapkus, Rob Schneider, Sarah Chalke, Jackie Sandler (Directed and produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmour company) The premise is a neat one and it's amazing that Spade still looks like a kid or underage in most of his films. The film just goes overboard in many areas but there were some really funny scenes that had me laughing out loud, sadly not enough. Lauren Lupkus is the breakout star in this. 7/10 |

She's good friends with Scott Aukerman and Paul F. Tompkins, and hangs out on Comedy Bang-Bang a lot, so I know her by her voice and characters. But the only movie/TV stuff I've seen is Orange is the New Black and Between Two Ferns, where she wasn't called on to do much. EDIT: Oh, I forgot she was also on Crashing and the last season of BBT. |
Quote:
I think she was the star of the movie for sure. It's funny how Adam Sandler always makes sure to have a role for Rob Schneider. He was funny in what he did in this movie. Sandlers wife Jackie also pulled off a good performance. |
Ya'll should watch this shit with your SO. LMAO
Literally everyone in this movie is an asshole, except John Krasinski. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U2p1u13R-eE" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Recent movies I’ve seen (multiple times):
Moana (2016): 4.5/5 stars. Now that I’ve memorized every line of the first 45 minutes, I have come to realize that Moana is my favorite movie heroine of all time. Great music. Animation is unremarkable. Humor works for all ages. The Good Dinosaur (2015): 4/5 stars. The animation in this is outstanding. Do yourself the favor of watching the first 15 minutes to see beautiful art. Writing is average. Lack of songs detracts from the rewatch-ability rating. |
Watched “No Beast So Fierce” on Amazon last night. Wow, was a good movie with lots of tension. We both enjoyed it.

Becky (2020) Kevin James, Lulu Wilson, Joel McHale
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10314450/ Whoa did I just watch a crazy movie called Becky starring Kevin James as a Neo-Nazi White Supremacist who escapes from prison and a family he encounters while on a search for something from his past. He encounters a young girl named Becky and shit goes wild. Pretty crazy and intense drama. Only one part of the story got a little stupid but for the most part really good. Reminds me of Freeway with Reese Witherspoon and the star look a lot like her too. I give it 8/10 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5-j5HtaOSjA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The Devil All the Time looks good (comes out on Netflix in September). The cast is loaded (Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgard etc etc). Love films that take place in the deep South.

I'm Thinking Of Ending Things (Netflix) - not sure exactly the **** I just watched but will say the first 85% was truly amazing. Anxiety riddled horror that devolves into some type of musical attempt of showcasing the manifestation of loneliness, life trauma, possible mental illness which lost me for the last 15%. Mostly because I hate sing-song, dance-walking performance type stuff even when its appropriate, so YMMV.
Give me Nobody: The Beach: [Leonardo video game scene] any day of the week over interpretive dance in movies. That said, the true horror of this movie is when my wife informed me lead actor Jesse Plemons (Todd from Breaking Bad) has at least one confirmed creampie on record with Kirsten Dunst. |
I caught American Pickle. It was meh. Worth the time but not groundbreaking and some gaping holes.
Spoiler!
That being said, Rogan does really well in it. |

Checked out a couple of Netflix movies...
Project Power - I liked the concept, but the movie was a solid "meh" for me in spite of Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing their best. Old Guard - I really liked this one, and it could be set up for a sequel. Charlize Theron might be an absolute kook IRL, but I do like the majority of her movies. The dude that plays her "second" could pass as Mads Mikkleson's little brother; the entire supporting cast was great. Check it out if you're in the mood for an action/shoot 'em up. |
