It's cool. Mizzou basketball was in the crapper this year, no denying it. Don't worry though, we'll save you a seat on the couch when your Embiid-less team gets bounced early from the tournament.

And bonus - football season is coming up soon. Looking forward to Kansas winning that spring game again?

It's too bad to be missing out on the one month a year when the country is casually enjoying some basketball, but whatever. Football will be here before you know it. :doh!:

Try making the final four, or better yet, the tournament before you try to downplay our success.

Two football Final fours in the last decade. A win away from the title game is the same damn thing. They just don't raise banners for it. Losing sucks.

Funny, all you've been talking about for the past 3 months is mizzou's "5th place" finish.

Then again, we saw what happened to Sam's Como-Sexuals once they had to play a real team.

Anybody watch ESPN 30 for 30 Requiem For The Big East last night?

Great video and interviews. What a beast of a conference that was. And all those coaches. Most of whom admitted that it didn't matter how good basketball was, that football drove the bus and essentially killed their conference.

Great show.

Yes, and strange thing is, I can name the coach for everyone of those Big East coaches, but couldn't tell you the coach for more than 4 teams in every other big conference.

It was a great run and really changed collegiate sports on television.

Smaller schools that don't play football are never going to be able to work with larger ones that do. It was destined to fail once they brought in Miami, WVU and Va Tech.

They made good points by showing that as an independent Syracuse was able to operate as a football team with basketball being involved with the Big East. That's no longer a viable option so there's really no way for them to co-exist with Georgetown. Great doc last night.

It wouldn’t be overstating the case to say that the SEC is halfway to being a mid-major: According to Jeff Sagarin’s conference ratings, the difference between the SEC and the Big 12 (the top-rated basketball conference this year) was larger than that between the SEC and the West Coast, Atlantic 10 or Mountain West conferences.

They think you're a mult because they believe there are only a couple people locally who dislike Mizzou. When in reality, Kansas basketball is easily the most popular hoops program across their own state:

Shame on Oklahoma and Missouri:

While both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State made the Big Dance, these two schools only account for 20 of the state’s 77 counties (26 percent). Thirty-three counties went for Kansas (43 percent), while 15 went for Duke or UNC (19 percent). C'mon, the Cowboys are a five-seed!

Missouri is even worse. The Show-Me State is also sending two programs, the University of Missouri and Saint Louis. Saint Louis gets nothing, while the Tigers account for just three of the state's 114 counties (3 percent). That's fewer than went for Duke (five), Illinois (seven), UNC (13), or Kansas (78, or 68 percent). Butler, a mid-major two states away, picks up two counties despite not winning any in Indiana.

Below are the rest of Facebook's NCAA maps, and you can read some more analysis here. Enjoy!

That map says more about Facebook doing a shitty job pulling data than anything else.

I suspect if they had pulled the official Mizzou Athletics website data with 420,000 likes (rather than a random and unofficial basketball page with less than 5k likes), things might have tracked differently. Of course, that's nearly 1/2 the likes used to build the map you posted here.

I tried to find the KU sports page that would correspond, but I was unsuccessful. Through a friend who graduated from KU, I found one for the men's hoops team that has about 220k likes (and is not even the official one), but not an all-sports one. Does KU's AD have a Facebook page? How many people have liked it?

Prison Bitch 03-17-2014 04:35 PM

Let's stipulate you're correct and that Mizzou's AD is more popular than Kansas basketball in the state, even specifically for basketball. You still have to explain why Kansas has such an insanely high popularity in the state. That question cannot be resolved by your hypothesis. Because even if you're right, Kansas should NOT be putting up such high numbers in a state they are (supposedly) so despised in.

All we see are plurality results. The Missouri Facebook page they used - an unofficial basketball one - has like 5k likes NOW. Who knows what it was a year ago when that map was generated? Not me.

That means a mere 6k votes to the OFFICIAL KU basketball page that Facebook used to compare would turn those county maps KU's way.

Facebook's method was shoddy. Therefore that map is pretty but says nothing.

Pathetic. KU basketball has something like 330k likes while Mizzou has 69k. I'm no mathematician but that is awfully disparate. It stands to reason that you will find tons coming from Missouri. Your logic also breaks down when you consider Kansas basketball is much more likely to have many more "offshoot" or unofficial fan pages that will only increase the data gap.

At any rate you can view their maps for several sports, and they all pass the eye test.

greatgooglymoogly 03-17-2014 05:26 PM

Mizzou doesn't do too well south of I-60. The Ozarks are a mishmash of fan bases with Arkansas at the top. Mizzou, KU, and Oklahoma all bounce around depending on how their teams are. Missouri State has its share of the pie in the Springfield area, mostly alumni and students. Mizzou has made up ground in the past ten years, though.

So, you've all got that going for you.

I care about Mizzou now the same as I used to care for the Jerry Springer show back in the late 90's. Pure comedy.

Obviously it's a function of living in KC. The media still covers those clowns and tries to give them equal air time despite having a fraction of the fan base or the success. So naturally we must know what's happening with them since we can't avoid it.

I'm sure the folks in Wichita or Dallas or Topeka don't even know who Mizzou is anymore but then, they don't have to listen about the greatness of Gary "Zero Conference Titles" Pinkel or Frank "Zero NCAA Tourney Wins" Haith.

... that comes in behind Duke, UNC and UK in terms of national popularity.

No question about that, Kansas is less popular than those teams are.

I'm finding it a bit different. Finding much less mizzou coverage than before. You could feel the sadness in Steven St. John's voice this year not being included in all the fun last week for the Big 12 Tourney.

Strange decision to leave the conference and go somewhere no one knows you.

COLUMBIA - The first 500 MU students at Tuesday's NIT basketball game can get in free with an ID.

The Tigers take on Davidson in the first game of the 2014 National Invitation Tournament. This is the first time since 2008 that Mizzou hasn't played in the NCAA tournament.

"It's disappointing for sure, I'd say," said MU Student Matt Hamilton, "It's still exciting that we get some kind of tournament or game but you know, obviously we'd like to see us in the national tournament, the big dance."

Dave Reiter, Associate AD with the MU Athletic Department, said if students have already bought their tickets, they will be refunded on their student accounts. He also encourages students to be at Mizzou Arena at 6 pm for the 8 pm start time, for a better chance of receiving a free ticket.ROFL
