Or just keep youtubing for stuff and you'll no doubt find a lot of good advice

Where are you fishing and what are you fishing for, specifically?

Also, give me a rundown of exactly what gear you're fishing with.

I don't know what to use and how to rig for catching stuff here, so please excuse my likely incorrect terminology use here.

We fished 4 hours this weekend without a bite, although I'll say those around us got nothing either. Used Power bait balls and power bait worms. Son used a bobber and I tried a Texas rig setup (?) using a jig head with a long powerbait worm as the body, letting it sink and giving it some action every so often.

He still seems very interested after spending 2 hours fishing each day without a bite. I don't want him to get discouraged though!

Get some night crawlers and work your way up from that.

Tierra verde lake park. Says it's stocked with trout, bass, bluegill and catfish.

Here's a video at that lake. I don't know what he's using.

I have a basic fishing pole. I have been trying trout eggs and powerbait worms (they really do look like real worms!). I have no idea what I should be using or how to be using it!

Sounds like maybe that pond is due for a restocking, bluegill should be going apeshit on those trout eggs

I'd just go with a simple bobber, especially for the youngster

urban lakes typically only get about 200 trout per stocking (sometimes quite a bit less). By the time casual anglers get there, most if not all have already been fished out by those fellas you see sitting around the ponds sitting on their buckets with multiple poles in the water.

I would head up to Dead Horse State park in Cottonwood if you want to catch fish. 3 'lagoons' about 2-4 acres each. They get stocked every week during the winter, couple thousand fish at a time. Powerbait is the standard bait there.

Basic set up is light/ultralight rod and reel, 6-lb. test nylon/fluorocarbon, 1/8th-oz. splitshot or lead weight (egg-style) about 12-16 inches above the hook (sz16).

I'm sending you a pm in case you want more info. I'll ask a couple of my urban lakes buddies if there's one that's getting more fish than the others.

Find a decent fishing store, ask where to learn to fly fish. Dad and I learned from a co-worker of Dad's who owned a little motel in Colorado and spent the winters working in KC, FWIW, you can take the fly off the flyrod and just practice working the flyline in the street or your front yard. Good way to get accurate/learn to handle the flyline. Good trout flyrods are pretty spendy BUT for KC Metro a pretty basic panfish setup won't break the bank. You'll be happier with a $70 rig you get to use than a $350 rig that always stays in the closet unless you drive to CO/Utah. A bunch of 'popping bugs' and a 6' leader, get a canoe or rowboat and work the shoreline from 20' offshore and bring 2 stringers. Bass, perch and bluegill are pretty tasty and you can always fillet 'em, can them like you can green beans and mix the canned 'wild fish' with store bought canned salmon and make salmon patties galore. He'll grow up big and strong with that much protein.

How old is your son? We’ve checked out the fish at Bass Pro shop and my son likes looking at the fishing rods there. He turns 4 in May. I’m not sure he could sit still long enough to try fishing just yet.

He just turned 6. Lots of bites on the bluegills today so we fished for 2 hours straight! It was awesome.

Funny for some reason today I was thinking about how fun it was to have my kids watching bobbers. What a great time. Bluegills on their spawning beds are amazing.

I've never fished here in AZ so it was fun for me too. We are learning as we go. The Bluegills were nice because he could get the idea of watching the bobber about 5-10ft from the shore as they were hitting the worms. Dude tries to reel as fast as he can anytime the bobber was dipping. We were working on patience and letting the bobber really go under before setting the hook. LMAO

He's got the fever but wants to try catching "other fish" now. I saw some small mouth bass jumping a bit, what's the technique for those? I am assuming baits/jigs/spinners with lots of casting and reeling? I also heard they stock these urban ponds with Catfish soon because they are about the only fish that can make it through the Phoenix summers without dying. Hotdogs and shrimp off the bottom is what I am told catches catfish which is again, something I've never fished for. Those lunkers could be really fun I bet!

You can catch bass and other sportfish with a bobber too, but yeah your chances go up with lures and lots of casting to cover as much area as possible

And thats where youngsters can run into trouble, because their chances of getting snagged/stuck in rocks etc goes way up... as for the catfish what you've been told is fine for channel cat, but blues and flatheads prefer live bait or cut bait (fish head or chunk of meat)

Lews newfound family bonding has me reminiscing about back when I took my two fishing when they were young

You get them all set up with a simple bobber and bait, but YOU wanna cast lures and try different things... well if the bluegill aren't biting, suddenly they wanna do what you're doing because it looks fun

So you finally relent and set them up to cast lures, big mistake... because the next thing you know, the only thing you're going to be doing is trying unstick your lures from bushes, trees, rocks and logs for the next hour

And at that point you're just ready to go home LMAO

If I could go back in time, I wouldn't go casting about and trying to be the Big Kahuna when I took them out... instead I'd bobber fish just like them the entire time, teaching them to crawl before they walk so to speak

No one ever said you have to let that bobber just sit in one place the whole time, slowly trawl that bait under your bobber around different kinds of cover

Nice catch.

Though I've never been able to wrap my mind around purposefully snagging fish before. Doesn't seem like fishing to me personally.

Would love to see one of those things in person someday though. Wild looking fish.

jerryaldini 03-25-2024 07:02 PM

For the small mouths nothing is more fun than popper flies on the surface in still water. With a kid setup you would just attach a casting bubble to the line to give it enough weight to cast. You make a very short quick retrieve to pop the face of the fly on the surface and create a disturbance. Wait for the wave rings to die before the next retrieve. Fantastic surface action for bass and bluegill, if he doesn't get too tired casting. Man I miss it.

Oh and of course bring your fly rod to do the same without the bubble!

ptlyon 03-25-2024 07:09 PM

When I was a teenager Iowa PBS had some outdoors shows.

I remember one in particular of the host being in a belly boat on a small farm pond fly fishing for bluegill. Poppers, flies. Man that looked like a blast.

I need a new basic rod and reel for fishing bass/catfish here.

All I have been using is a micro lite rod, 5'6", that I used 20 years ago for trout in Montana, and it's not handling the setups I am using down here. I think it's max 6lb line. I bought a cheap prespooled reel and it's been nothing but loops and tangles too. Not sure what's causing that here but that was never a problem decades ago?

Give me some guidance on rod/reel combo that won't break the bank!

The Taylor and Gunnison Rivers are my home waters in the summer months. I mainly fish the Arkansas near Buena Vista during the winter.

Here's the first trout I pulled in during my 40th birthday trip earlier this month. Click on it to watch the video. I'm heading up to Kalispell in July to float the Flathead and do some alpine fishing through Glacier.

There's so much fun water in that river basin to fish. The Taylor and Gunnison is what gets everyone there, but I've spent countless trips out there fishing the smaller creeks and tributaries that feed into the Gunny and Taylor. If you have time on your next trip you should make the 75 minute drive from Gunnison to the Black Canyon and fish some of the browns that lurk at the bottom of it. The fishing pressure there isn't nearly as intense as the rest of the Gunnison and you can fool some pretty massive brown trout that would otherwise laugh at your rig anywhere else on the river.

Spring Creek and the Upper Taylor are awesome on the Taylor.

Cochetopa Creek and Tomichi Creek are dry fly paradises during the summer that feed into the Gunnison not too far from town.

We will usually pull the camper up around mile marker 8 on the Buena Vista side of Cottonwood Pass during the summer. It's pretty easy to pop into BV to restock food and it's about a 35 minutes drive over the pass from there to the C&R on the Taylor.

Do you know how to use a bait caster?

I grew up on Abu Garcia reels. They have very smooth reels for flipping jigs and heavier more rugged reels for catfish. They have more budget friendly options, but the C3 reel is a very proven system and it can be found in both a bass and mid sized catfish rig. I have a box of them that have been beat all to hell and drug all over the place with several trips to Canada and they just keep going. Have several 7000c reels set up for heavier missouri river fishing and snagging, but I don't know if you have a need to go that heavy as they can be quite cumbersome if you're staying on the smaller end of catfish.

They also make spinning reels if that's more your thing, but I don't have any experience AB spinning reels.

When Jake Skarloken finally caught a glimpse of the big fish on the end of his line, his jaw dropped.

He knew it was a lunker of some kind when it chomped into the plastic minnow on his jig in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The way it stubbornly hugged the bottom of Crooked Lake for 10 minutes, he envisioned a monster 30-inch walleye. When he finally lifted it up into the water column on a six-pound test line, the fish began to pull his solo canoe in the same direction as the lake's current. His father and brother-in-law paddled next to him to grab the back of his canoe to hold him in place.

"It wasn't spinning me around, but I couldn't pull the fish in," Skarloken said of the encounter in late May. "My rod was keeled over for 20 minutes."

The fish ran three times before tiring out. When the incredible northern pike surfaced and laid on its side, they netted it beside one of the canoes and paddled it to shore. Weighing around 30 pounds, the pike was too big to lift over the gunwales. The catch was so shocking and unexpected, the fishing party forgot to take pictures of the pike against a measuring tape. Adding to the emotional blur was Skarloken's urgency to return the exhausted fish to the lake.

"From the moment that beast hit, it was an epic battle," said Skarloken, who runs a tile and stone installation company in the Brainerd area. "We were all in such shock and I just wanted to make sure it had a healthy release.''

Mandy Erickson of the Department of Natural Resources said the blunder probably robbed Skarloken of a place in the state's catch-and-release record book. DNR staff members were so impressed by the pictures he submitted — sans ruler — that they highlighted the catch in a recent social media post.

"If you're sending in an application for a record fish, please don't forget to take photos of measurements!'' the DNR wrote on Facebook under a photo of Skarloken holding the fish in shallow water next to his father's canoe.

For catch-and-release fish to be considered as record-breakers, DNR officials need to see a photo plainly showing the whole fish lying flat on a measuring device with its tail pinched and its snout at zero on the ruler. It's pretty common, Erickson said, for submitted photos to be problematic.

Skarloken said he and another member of his fishing group dangled a measuring tape next to the fish as they held it in the air. They agreed between themselves that the fish covered at least 47 ¼ inches of tape, if not 47 ½ inches. Had the pike and the measuring tape been lying flat, the northern's true length would have been closer to 48 inches, Skarloken estimated.

Skarloken was sensitive to the fish's health while trying to document it.

Basswood also was the basin that allegedly produced a mammoth 45-pound, 12-ounce northern pike May 16, 1929. Back then, certified scales were not required to submit a record-breaking entry to the DNR, and the agency doesn't have records to indicate whether the catch was real. Neither the length nor girth of that fish was recorded.

Skarloken was fishing for walleyes in a deep "honey hole" on Crooked Lake when he crossed paths with the biggest fish he's ever caught. It was day three of a 10-day outing on Skarloken's 21st annual fishing trip to the BWCAW. He had fished the big lake many times before, and previous big catches are what beckoned him to return.

"I like big fish," he said. "That's what I target."

This year's five-member fishing party included Skarloken's father, Steve; brother-in-law Dennis Robinson; and friend Jacob Bourgeois, all from the Brainerd area; and his father, John. They were stuck in camp for two days because of high winds. On Thursday morning, May 23, it was time to catch walleyes for dinner and the three canoes stayed within 30 yards of each other. The big northern hit around noon.

When it came time to take pictures of it, Skarloken remembers Bourgeois lining up a shot in disbelief.

"He said, 'My god, that looks fake,' " Skarloken recalled.

The group took a video of the release. Skarloken said he was fixated on the northern's survival, especially since the fish was fatigued from such a long tug-of-war. He waited about a week after his return from the wilderness before contacting the DNR. He knew he didn't have the required photo, but he wanted someone in the fisheries department to appreciate the fish's magnitude.

"It was impressively thick, that's one thing we all remember about it," said Skarloken, who is paying a taxidermist to make a replica based on the group's photos.

"In hindsight I wish we would have laid it down and taken a picture of the measurement," he said. "There's five of us who saw it and know what it was — the biggest northern pike caught and released in Minnesota.''

Well I just bought plane tickets to Montana for the 2nd week of October. I'll be fishing the Bitterroot near Hamilton and I'm sooo excited! I'll have a ton of fishing time - I'm going by myself Wednesday though Sunday. Yeeeah! Maybe I can get into some big pre-spawn browns.

Any recommendations for someone interested in fishing again but hasn't cast a line in two decades?

Get up early. Be on the water when the sun is coming up. Go to the bait shop and get a bucket of minnows. Put the minnow about 4 feet (or whatever depth keeps it off the bottom) under the bobber and just cast it out there.

That's about as simple as it gets and it's bound to get you some summer action.

Get an easy to operate, inexpensive Zebco and watch some youtube vids as a refresher... keep it simple at first, the humble bobber and worm is a timeless choice because it works

I did a little fishing around Mammoth Lakes and Lake Tahoe. Only caught one small brook trout. But it really was just a little as it wasn’t really a fishing trip. The streams and rivers were great but just couldn’t get anything going. Of course I’m not all that experienced in trout fishing out west.

For those who are, is the fly choice really all that important?

It's critically important unless you are targeting freshly stocked fish. You have to match what the fish are feeding on at the time....size, shape, color, and presentation

Get either a spinning reel or a spincast (zebco-type) reel and appropriate med.-fast action rod. 6-10-lb. test mono line. Like E6 said, start with a bobber-type set up.

I'd grab a half dozen spinners as well, like Rooster tails, Mepps, Blue Fox, etc. And/or spoons, such as Kastmasters and L. Jensen's Super Dupers. Stay under 1/4 oz. Any color as long as they're silver or gold, maybe with a blue or red stripe across one side of them.

Get a pack of split-shot lead weights. Do not get the tin ones. They're crap.

Find your needlenose pliers and nail clippers.

Have fun.

Well there’s my problem.

As far as I know, outside of locally here in Kansas City area, I’ve never fished for stocked trout.

So I guess next time I go out, (I’ll be in Estes Park with the family in fall) even though it’s not a fishing trip per se, I’ll still take the bait selection and presentation a little more seriously. Recommend any resource that sort of does the work for you to help make your fly choice based on season, species, and area?

Iirc, there's several flyshops in that area; just walk in and start a conversation. Plan to buy a half dozen or so flies to loosen their tongues a little.

You can also take a look at either Fishbrain.com or troutroutes.com. Should be some good info in there.

For that area though, you're usually talking mayflies and caddis imitations. just got to get the sizes right for the time of year.

I'm heading up to Glacier for a week on Wednesday. We have a cabin near Pinnacle, Montana 500 feet from the Middle Fork of the Flathead and wee a float trip planned for Sunday. Taking my 3 wt and plan to fish my way through a good number of trails the other days.

Last week I trekked a few miles up Cottonwood Pass west of Buena Vista and stalked brookies and cutties for a couple days. My last day I went solo and spent most my time sifting through game trails and up some side channels to chase some of the bigger spookier guys in the pass. Here's a couple Youtube videos...one setting up my approach and the other with my catch.

That definitely seems like the best bet to just go ask at the shop. I’ve driven by at least one I recall right away dozens of times. I don’t have a huge selection of them so I’d likely need some anyways.

That is some real bushwhacking! That type of fishing is not for me. It's way too frustrating with losing flies and getting the tip of my rod stuck in bushes. Or a missed hook set slinging my fly and leader up and into a bush and I lose the entire end of my setup.

I know we discussed getting kids into fishing several months ago, but I'm now thinking my son may have the attention span and interest to actually go now (4 year old).
I haven't fished in 30 years and do not have any equipment. Anyone who's been through this with kids, is a simple cheap kids starter set like this sufficient or is something better preferable? https://a.co/d/0SC44xk

While we are at it, any advice on a budget friendly rod/reel for myself?

**I should add, at this point probably fishing at a small lake or river at a nearby park.

Get the kid a Snoopy rod and basic starter kit from wherever

Get yourself a $40-50 Zebco, and a slightly bigger starter kit

Watch some of the many starter tips fishing vids in the last few pages of this thread, then go have an adventure together

Just got back from my (usually) annual trip to SW Alaska. Got several nice 'bows but I'm really proud of this personal best lake trout. I usually go after lakers in mid June just after ice out at an Interior lake where a buddy has a cabin. I've got numerous 2-5 lb lakers but this one would likely be 9+ lb. We measured it at 34". Didn't fight as well as the rainbows. Certainly didn't jump. But it was still a great fish.

Unless it’s a salmon and it’s going to die, I’m a catch and release guy. In many streams I fish, it’s catch and release only for rainbows > 20”.

Day 1 was a float trip on the main river north of Hamilton. Day 2 started on the main river south of Darby, then I drove up to the west fork for the evening. The best day was day 3 on the east fork. The fly shop guy told me about a way to access some great water through a cattle ranch. It was was awesome...riffle run pool, about 30 feet wide, through open meadow with lots of casting room, and zero fishermen.

Yeah, I figured out the first one from the pic when I looked again. Been through there before.

That east fork bit, you have to park near a small overpass? Walk upstream maybe be 2-3 miles to a private property fence strung across the stream?

You actually turn left right before the bridge on the main road and take a small road back, thwn you take a dirt road to a tiny bridge. Right there is miles fishable water all the way east.

On my list as well. Good friend of mine has extended a permanent invitation to come down to FL to go tarpon and bonefish flyfishing. Seriously thinking next year will be the year.

The neighbor lady was out in the backyard trying to get her dogs to go in and of all things she finds a fish. She's like what in the world! Then as she disposes of the fish she looks up one of her dogs as another fish in his mouth. Before it's over she finds 4 dead fish with the heads eaten off in her backyard. I looked around my back yard and found no fish and our backyards are almost the same backyard. They have an iron fence a small dog can squeeze through so it's not much of a barrier but the fish were only in her yard. There is no real body of water close to our houses so this is a weird mystery of where the fish came from. ?

Tornado nearby maybe? When I was really little, maybe only 5-6, there was a tornado that picked up some small fish off of a lake then dumped them across parts of SE Tulsa, miles from where the tornado actually tracked. My buddy told me they were still flopping when they landed in his grandmother's backyard.
