Smith was the Co-DC and recruiting coordinator. He's clearly a big part of the defensive coaching staff so it seems a promotion is something of a no-brainer. |

Hey, you may have answered previously and I missed it, but how was the Cotton Bowl? I hope you had a great time! |

I mean that first half was just booooooring but it was fascinating because I just never thought Ohio State could score. The whole time I'm sitting there saying "man, just a single TD and it's probably ballgame..." And when Mizzou started to slowly break through in that 3rd quarter, it felt over even when they were lining up for a FG to go up 6-0. They missed it and it was on from there. It took a little doing to make sure I wasn't just watching the game on that giant screen, though. You really had to remind yourself to watch the field because that screen is somethin' else. |

Man, Ohio State does lean into the villain role, well. Lit that place up with red lights and they just carry an ominous sort of storm trooper vibe about them. Mizzou's was much more 'we are Mizzou' and that sort of basic rah rah stuff. It clearly wasn't OSU's first rodeo. Regarding the gameplay - sometimes it was impressive defense but man, sometimes it was just bad offense. That first half was just 2 boxers that seemed to be dancing around the ring and hoping the other guy would drop his guard. But then they weren't in a punchers stance anyway so guard or no guard, neither guy was gonna ring the other's bell. It was just a lot of really uninspired, cautious gameplay. And frankly some fairly lazy officiating at times that was also kinda frustrating. At least in the 2nd half, even when a play didn't work, the teams did look to be TRYING to move the ball. I just didn't get that same feeling in the 1st half. |
So everyone is turning Bama down….
Drink’s name has been thrown around as a possible candidate here and there… If DeBoer says no, I’d start to wonder…not saying he’d take the job or they’d hire him but they’d be down the list at that point, who’s taking it? They aren’t hiring Kiffin or Dabo. |
That’s a big decision for any coach. Saban has almost impossible shoes to fill and the expectations are playing in the NC game at minimum. The pay might be great, but the timeline for success will also be very short.

Another couple years at/near this level from Mizzou (cart before the horse, I know) would have Drink as a real candidate for that job. But this is the first year he's really put himself in this tier of coaches. I don't think he'd really be on their radar yet. I almost wonder if they wouldn't start looking at an NFL guy as a placeholder for a Lincoln Riley sort to emerge down the line. Some of these rejections come, IMO, from just not wanting to be the guy that replaces Saban. If/when this hire fails, you'll have a much broader pools of coaches who want to be the coach who replaces the guy who replaced The Guy. If you have Drink concerns, THAT'S the hire that should worry you. Not this year, but in 3 years if the replacement in question doesn't have some CFP success on his resume. |
Looks like it’s DeBoer…whew.
I think he’s a good coach but this feels like Harsin the sequel if I’m being honest…. |

It didn't really need reinforcing for me, but football in a dome just isn't the same. I've been to plenty of games at the Edward Jones Dome in STL and had that opinion already pretty firmly entrenched, but even in a badass new stadium it still lacks atmosphere. I guess if you don't have a home stadium like Arrowhead it might be different, but after going to Chiefs games for the past 30 years I don't think I'll even get on board with indoor football. I'm also skipping out tomorrow for that exact reason (outdoors) though ROFL |
Something to watch:
DeBoer might be interested in Kirby Moore as OC. They have some connections. His current OC is expected to be a serious candidate for the UW job. |

There's a real shot that Moore ends up the OC at Alabama through all this. Our coaching staff's gonna get poached in its own right. |

Signing day being in December helps a lot. Those guys are locked in unless the head coach is fired. I’d much rather have assistants other teams are interested in hiring away than guys getting no bites. It’s a sign of success. |

Some smoke around DJ Durkin being the next DC….

Would be one gross hire.

It better be DJ Jazzy Jeff over him.

The hell?
|
I'm not sure if it is Durkin, but he's a serious candidate.
I'm told he was lined up to be Saban's DC if he didn't retire. The pros are that he has good recruiting chops and is a strong performer. The downside is obviously that he worked a player to heatstroke and death 5 years ago. On-field, I think it's a great hire. Factoring in the other stuff makes it feel slimy. |
Mozee is a pretty solid bet to Mizzou right? Love this kids game he's visiting Lincoln this weekend can't help but think Raiola gives us a chance but with the streak Dirk is on it seems not likely
|
Corey Batoon from South Alabama is the new DC per Pete Thamel....
Uh.....sure..... |
Who
|
Top 30 defense the last 2 years. At South Alabama. He's going to have a ton more resources at Mizzou. I don't hate it.
That's all I've got... |
After a little research I am glad this is the hire over Durkin. Thank **** for not going that direction, Drinkwitz.
|
They beat Oklahoma State 33-7 this last season in Stoolwater. Their HC just got hired as the DC for Alabama. 15th in total defense last season.
The more I read, the more I like, tbh. https://i.imgur.com/n73IZyo.png |
Hope he's a good coach, cause I saw some scuttlebutt that he's knocked up a couple of women while still being married and has the obvious Hugh Freeze and Liberty connections. Dude is also 55 years old and this is his first P5 coordinator job.
|
I think I'll settle for that over killing kids in practice tbh
|
Seems like a perfectly competent hire.
They're losing quite a bit on defense (Robinson, Hopper, Rakestraw, Abrams-Draine, Carlies), so if the D takes a step back it's likely more that than the coordinator change. |

I've been hearing that KAD, Robinson and Schrader have been killing it at the senior bowl.

You never know. Reid does have a connection with Mizzou. He did draft Morse and Bolton in the second round. I would certainly like to one of them end up here. It would also be great to the Beakers dismay. I remember how much they hated the Bolton pick at the time. If course they've changed their tune now, but they were pretty vocal about not liking him at first. I'm sure that it would be the same with one of these guys

Well now I'm awfully curious about a North End Zone project.
Because the north end zone has always kinda been considered off limits by the old-heads that didn't want the grass and rocks taken out of there. Personally I've always hated it and think it looks like amateur hour, but my kids like going over there and screwing off during games so there's some novelty to it. But if we want the stadium to look like a 'big boy stadium' - that's the last place to do it. And it really does need a bit of attention. |
I've heard a lot of rumblings over the last year about them doing exactly that as the next stadium upgrade.
Didn't put much stock into it originally to mention it though. Maybe they actually will close it in? |

Will be excited to see what they come up with. |

And it's something a buddy of mine pointed out to me when I was in High School after he'd moved here from Texas. He said "man, nobody that lives here is proud to live here...they just act to cool for everything..." Mizzou fans are kinda like that, unfortunately. Living in Columbia and I can pretty confidently say that, as was the case when I lived in KC, the people that live there tend to roll their eyes a bit when they say they live there. There's just not a ton of pride about it. So Mizzou fans are going to turn out when the product is good but thats about it. And they're likely not going to fill up an 80K feet stadium at any point. They're just 'too cool' for it. I dunno if I did a very good job of explaining it, but it seems that there's an underlying cynicism to being a Missourian and it sorta extends to Mizzou athletics. I suspect it probably exists for a lot of states, but in those areas where football is a religion, that's really not the case. |

But alas, the gay left winger cool kids table will probably not let me sit with them. |
No idea why they don’t just put something on stilts over the rocks on the north end. Make it something fancy and unique that no other stadium has. Keep the old ****s happy, keep the area for kids to play on, add a ton of seats.
Make it an attraction |

Mizzou players all looked good. Robinson made himself a ton of cash this week, you could make a case for him being overall MVP if you watched the practices. Announcers were drooling over him, Daniel Jeremiah in particular. If he's on the board when we pick, I'd have no problem with Veach grabbing him. |

Knock on wood or whatever but it feels like if our outgoing DC was taking a bunch of kids it would have happened by now. Or is that wishful thinking on my part? That was my big concern with the coaching shakeup.

Mizzou could go 12-0 with a +30 ppg margin and that mother****er Rhoades would rank them 13th.

Well, this is unfortunate. I guess she went to law school at AZ so there's some history there but I'd like to think we could keep someone like her if we wanted to given the recent success and trends. She did a heck of a job in her 3 years here.
