Definitely one of the better movies of its kind. Kostner and Harrelson make a great team. Kostner's portrayal of Frank Hamer is basically an old fart version of Eliot Ness.

I would have happily paid to see this in the theater.

Agree with all your points! The Highwaymen was awesome and I really enjoyed it (esp the part where they send Bonnie & Clyde to Hell). Some intense moments through out and Kostner/Woody had great chemistry .

It really a NEW movie, but what he’s Extracted last night and damn what a good movie. I highly recommend it if you like thrillers with twists. Def up there with Coherence as an under the radar movie!

I'm going to pick up the book that Pennywise recommended, but from what little I have read about Hamer he was a tough customer with a short fuse and a very personalized view of right and wrong.

He was. Costner portrayed him fairly accurately.

The movie apparently tried to be historically accurate, and many portions were, such as Bonnie's limp, the crowds around the gun-shot car, the way the populace would shield them from the police, although certain events were doubtless written for the movie's sake.

From what I could see, there were 2 areas where they veered off historically:

1. the witness who saw Bonnie shoot the cop in Grapevine was later discredited. (This was in the trailer, so I don't think a spoiler alert is necessary). Later historians believe that Methvin was the one who actually pulled the trigger and it is doubtful whether Bonnie herself ever actually killed someone, although she certainly was an accomplice.

2. there is a lot of dispute over whether Bonnie and Clark were given an opportunity to surrender. I won't say where the movie goes, but this is an area where the movie really could go either way. Some people who were there said that Bonnie and Clyde were told to put their hands up. Other say that as they approached, someone began shooting. Oakley (one of the Bienville Parish deputies) later admitted that he shot first and everyone shot in response to his shot, although again, it's disputed whether Oakley did so after they were told to surrender or not.

All in all, though, the movie was pretty accurate. Hamer figured out that they were running in a circle and tried to head them off. There were real tensions between Hamer and Maney on the one hand and other law enforcement. Ma Richardson had disbanded the Rangers, more so because of her own corruption than any other reasons. She lost the next election and the Rangers were re-constituted. Her husband had been convicted of corruption and she ran for governor, although everyone knew he was pulling the strings. It's a fascinating story from many angles and I think that the director did a great job. I would certainly watch this movie again.

Hammock Parties 05-10-2019 09:52 AM

Watched Action Jackson last night, thinking of 'Hamas' the whole time.

It's devoid of intellectually stimulating content and the plot is paper thin, the dialogue is mostly ham-fisted, but damn some of the one liners are hilarious and the action scenes are absurd.

Chasing down a taxicab after delivering the line "I've got to catch a cab," jumping on it and going for a ride, shattering the windshield with your bare fist, and then vaulting over it later so it crashes? LMAO.

It's like the reeruned younger brother of Predator and Beverly Hills Cop.

Will never watch again.

I am reading the book about Hamer that Pennywise recommended. Sadly, one of the first things covered is the fact that Hamer's story about killing the guy who shot him as a kid wasn't true, but rather one of the numerous tall tales that sprung up about him throughout his life. In real life the guy who shot him got away with it, although he did die a couple of years later. West Texas was basically lawless back then.

Not new new, but I did just see Black Klansman on HBO. It's a Spike Lee film, it's not really my cup of tea but I found it enjoyable. Except the opening scene had Alec Baldwin doing his take on a George Wallace type character, which really had nothing to do with the main storyline. Also the last few minutes was filled with news footage of Charlottsville, which again, different decade and not really part of the story.

The film ran 2+15, if the opening and closing scenes had been omitted, it would of been a much better film and 2 hours. The main storyline is portrayed as a satire, a sort of dramedy. The main character is played by Denzil Washington's son, which I didn't know until after I watched it. He spoke better English than most white people. It was really funny at times, like when he was talking to David Duke on the phone, most of you know who that was. The in person contact was played by Adam Driver, I really like him as an actor. There were some really tense times and it got downright hairy, it had you on the edge of your seat. I gave it 6 stars, if the opening and closing scenes were omitted, I would give it 8 stars.

Dayze 05-16-2019 02:42 PM

probably not a 'new' movie, but we watched LBJ last night starring Woody Harelson.
I thought it was pretty good. A little slow in parts, but I though he did a good job.
Though, sometimes while trying to mimic LBJ's accent, it was a little 'too' Woody Harelson. But overall, I enjoyed it. Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lady Bird.

chiefzilla1501 05-16-2019 09:14 PM

Not a new movie, but holy shit the movie Creep on Netflix is an intense as hell thriller. Mark Duplasse is outstanding and he's quietly become an insanely good actor after getting his start playing a goofball on The League. Apparently Creep 2 is even better but no way I'm watching that back to back.

Saw this as a result of watching Paddleton which he's also outstanding in, especially toward the end.

KCUnited 05-26-2019 02:03 PM

Went to see Hail Satan? this afternoon. It's a documentary about The Satanic Temple and they're "fight" to separate church and state. It's super well done in portraying something serious in a deadpan, witty, fun kind of way that doesn't fit the OMG Satanic Panic portrayal people normally associate with Satanists. I recommend it, maybe not a Friday night out in a modern theater setting, but it was perfect for a BYOB matinee in an old theater over a 3 day weekend. Sold out show with amazing people watching. Hail Satan \m/

Baby Lee 05-31-2019 05:02 AM

Booksmart is pretty much everything you would expect, and not a lot you wouldn't.

If you like the genre of kids getting their last kicks out before the 'big event' [whatever that is in a particular situation], you'll enjoy seeing how the fellow kids do that thing today.

If you think you've seen the definitive movie about high school blowouts, whether it's American Graffiti, Ferris Bueller, 16 Candles, Dazed and Confused or Superbad, you probably already have and might find this either a retread or a new chapter of an old comic book.

It's fairly true to form and fairly decently updated without being pedantic or overbearing or overly precious about this particular moment. It's got all the signposts and signals, with plenty new to gawk at, giggle at, laugh at or just be bewildered by.

It's funny, laugh out loud in short quick bits, but not an all-out farce or raunchfest like American Pie, though it does have some 'grownup humor.' It's sweet and bittersweet at points as well.

I can see why it's getting raves AND I can see why it's underperforming. It's not something that you simply MUST see, but it's something that will entertain if you're in the mood.

I saw Rim of the World on Netflix after hearing it get talked up on Kevin Smith's podcast. They billed it as 'Goonies meets Independence Day". Which I guess it was, maybe, if you were coming from the perspective of a 5th grade class. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good, either.

On IMDB I've rated about 2500 movies, which doesn't make me an expert, but I found that movies rated 7.0 or better are theater worthy and anything less than 7.0 is best to wait for TV or DVD. Ma currently has a rating of 6.1, not saying you shouldn't see it, but maybe save your money.

I like IMDB because the reviews are from regular members and not professional film critics. On 'Ma' most of the reviews were in the range of 1 to maybe 6, here's one that gave it 3 stars and there are good amount of 3 star reviews.

Another Blumhouse Production to Rake in the Money With a Low Budget
Yee_Reviews30 May 2019

Good: No doubt, Octavia Spencer carries the film and without her, the film would have easily crumbled and been unwatchable. And that's about it for the good....

Bad: The story's goal/main theme is not interesting and the choices of the characters are, like always, stupid and ignorant. The romance is forced and unbelievable. The story and characters are under-developed and are not given detail. The film lacks a scare factor/shock-value and the only times the audience jumped were in unnecessary jump scare scenes throughout a campy horror flick.

Overall: Besides Octavia Spencer, the cast is throw-away and do not add much to the film making it its own. This is a skip, at most a wait for Netflix. Messy with loose holes as it never fully develops and dark humor that's cringe and laughable.

*The movie's lesson here is to have common sense!

It isn’t NEW new, but pretty close... rented Creed II last night, and was seriously let down

The first one was rock solid, but this felt completely mailed in... bad acting, poorly written dialogue, all of it was a big mess that played like a made for tv movie

I don’t want to dig up the old movies thread but I watched 2 recently.

I saw Death Wish, it was decent. Willis is a notably unbelievable doctor, but overall the show worked. They did a nice job of showing what would happen if a normal dude tried to start capping fools. Decent watch.

I also caught Blue Chips for the first time in forever. It hasn’t aged particularly well and the basketball in it isn’t very good, but man there were some fascinating aspects of it. First, Nolte crushes it. It’s been a good long time since I’ve seen him in something where he wasn’t drunk. It really was a heck of an acting job. Compelling stuff.

The big thing is the subject matter is pretty poignant given the fbi tapes and all that shit. It’s amazing how little has changed in 25 years and how obviously nobody gives a ****. Interestingly they got some big ass names. Knight, Pitino, Boeheim. That’s a lot of dudes that were 1. Making a pile of money so they probably didn’t need it and 2. Were paying players. I found it interesting.

Seeing young Penny Hardaway and Shaw I had to go look up some highlights.

Anyway it was a much more interesting watch than I anticipated.

I haven't seen it yet, the Beatles movie "Yesterday". I follow Mark Lindsey the singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders. He just wrote this about the movie.

Just got out of the theatre after seeing Yesterday. Wow. [No spoilers in my post, but can’t guarantee what’s in replies.]

1. Kate MacKinnon as the sleazy manager is great
2. Scary movie - he signs with 🔥 Universal 🔥
3. Label meeting is very Spinal Tap-ish, perfect
4. Why didn’t *I* think of using oversized rubber gloves for recording hand claps?
5. Not what I expected, in a good way
6. Lots of laughs and lots of poignancy. Bring a tissue
7. You know it’s a good movie when the audience is singing along with the song running with the credits
8. As we headed towards home, we were relieved to see that there was still a Beatles Channel on Sirius
9. GO

For those who don't know 60's music, here's Paul Revere and the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsey Live on Ed Sullivan, Mark is the singer.

I just saw the movie Yesterday this afternoon, about a musician who gives up after 10 years of playing small clubs in Britain. While riding his bike home, there is a 12 second blackout in the entire world. He is hit by a bus on his bike during the blackout. When he awakens he in the hospital. A week or so later, his friends give him a sort of party and present him with a new guitar since his was smashed. He said, a new guitar deserves a great song, so he plays the Beatles Yesterday and nobody knows the song. He thinks they're pulling his leg until he goes home and googles the Beatles and all that comes up are insects.

He realizes the world does know any Beatles music, so he begins playing all the Beatles songs and the fans are going crazy. He is signed to a recording contract and within a month, he is opening for Ed Sheerin. He suddenly becomes the greatest recording artist of all time. I won't tell anymore, but if you're a Beatles fan, go see this movie. I gave it an 8 out of 10. My theater was packed and the show before and after had huge lines going in.

Here he is singing "Help" before thousands on a beach in England as his new double album is released. Everyone in the film is British except for Kate Mckinnon of SNL who plays his sleazy manager.

The Beatles are overrated though...

Apparently there's a new Charlie's Angels movie coming out with butch Kristen Stewart in it. Wild.

Midsommar was great. Not for the squeamish though. There were some excruciating moments in it that literally made me go

Crawl was a tad bit better than expected. Cliche, emotional family backstory, suspect acting and dumb decision making, but the gator scenes were very well done. Entertaining flick as an excuse to get out of the summer heat.

Okay, assuming it doesn't get critically panned, this should get my ass in a theater seat.

I want to see this, hopefully it won't be like Pearl Harbor (2001).

Also that it isn't too much a CGI driven movie, Dunkirk was done very well in that aspect.

Watched a really interesting documentary on Netflix called Houston We Have A Problem. About a conspiracy, backed up by “some” documentation where the US bought Yugoslavia’s space program and engineering for the equivalent of like 50B in today’s dollars in an effort to get our Apollo program back on track. Turns out the Yugoslavians program was a little overstated and Kennedy, LBJ, and Nixon spent time trying to get their money back. Lol

Pretty interesting.

looking forward to The Nighingale. from the director of The Babadook. Looks very interesting and dark as hell.

Watched "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" yesterday with my boy and my niece.

I thought it was fun. Good "horror" movie for kids. The creatures they dreamed up were kinda cool. Overall it was fun. Just remember though, this movie is clearly aimed as a horror movie for pre-teens and teens. No complaints here and i thought it lived up to my expectations.

I'd like to add that i read the book as a kid. As an adult, i don't remember a damn thing about what i read back then haha so it was all new to me all over again.

Brightburn was probably the worst movie I've ever seen that I had hopes would be decent given the premise.

Yeah that's what I've heard - I'll still watch it.

Finally watched Venom. Not a good movie but I enjoyed it once I started viewing it like a comedy.

I don't understand this thread thing ...

Most of these movies you guys are discussing are old.

Is there a new new movies thread for movies that are new?
