Its time for some fun in the sun

Seems like everyone is on the river fishing for Walleyes. When I catch Walleye it’s usually when I’m fishing for Small Mouth and I catch them incidentally. I’m not so hot jig fishing in big water

Hog's Gone Fishin 04-02-2023 09:50 AM

The next 60 days are the BEST time of the year to fish

Rasputin 04-02-2023 06:35 PM

So my very first cast in a year I see all my bait fly off. I'm using a three hook rig. Welp I reeled in my line and that's all I had was a line. I lost my weights and leader. Well some dumbass (rip milk man) didn't get it tied very well and everything went flying. Smdh. Dumbass.

Lol, what knot(s) are you using?

Rasputin 04-02-2023 10:26 PM

Holy **** I had a battle. I bet it was a blue cat they are strong ****ers. Lasted about twenty minutes. I decided strip down to my underwear and put on a life jacket and went out as far as I could. We had a stand off then he spit the morsel out. God dammit it was fun though. This is just what I needed. My dick is shriveled up because it's cold but when that pole first bent over I got wood. Just like a hot chick bending over.

Now they've been playing around with my line but I got all night. I'm going to catch this mother ****er.

I enjoyed eating it as much as Cave Johnson did with that chick in Belize if you belize me.

Now that wind got brutal last night and i got word of 50 to 80 mph winds today so I cut my trip short but went to my daughters today and took a long nap. I was zapped.

Oh and this little shit Raiders fan tried to steal my bait.

I rigged up my gear a few days ago while cleaning out my garage. I think I'm gonna get back to fishing this summer

Graystoke 04-05-2023 08:41 AM

Heading out this Friday for some Driftless Iowa Trout fishing. Weather is supposed to be in mid 60's and gravel roads are drying out. Going to attack using the motorcycle and hopefully hit some cool gravel byway roads on the way. I tied up some Copper Johns and some Spider Flies in pink and orange. Fly line has been changed and new leader on!
I haven't been out fly fishing since December so I am ready to get it on.
Hitting a stream called Coldwater. The source comes right out of a Cave in Northeast Iowa and has some very interesting geology.

Man, that is awesome. My son and I are headed up in August for some driftless area fishin. He is going to school in St. Paul area so were gonna be hitting it alot. We tied up a bunch of pink squirrel flies, blood midges etc. and will bring terrestrials that time of year.

Crappie are hitting well in small lakes and ponds near KC. Should be spawning here in a couple weeks.

Let me know your stream destinations. Most of the time I haunt my favorite stream which has a significant portion on private property. I have managed to get permission and now all I have to do is text the landowners and let them aware I am on the property. Its a great setup as I hate fishing anywhere near folks. Plus this place has major Browns roaming around.

We used to make them out of 2x4's. Just make a frame for a cube and cover all but one side with wire mesh. Then pound a few nails to the inside of the open end, pointed downward into the cube. Put some chicken livers in it and they'll crawl over the top of the cage to get in but the nails prevent them from getting back out.

I am going more often. My biggest lack of skill in it is choosing the right lure for the conditions.

Other issue is tying them on. Arthritis in hands makes it hard.

This is about the easiest way to tie a terminal knot that I've found:
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nQs-iL4gHJk" title="Clinch Knot Hemostat Trick Shortcut - Easiest Way To Tie A Fishing Knot Fast!" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You can buy clips so you dont have to tie lures on.
https://www.basspro.com/SearchDisplay#q=snaps

Choosing lures can be a puzzle. Took me decades to figure out which baits to tie on in given situations. Fortunately, now we have YouTube, and there are millions of clips about how to choose which baits for a given situation.

Here's some vids that can be helpful. I'd stick with the top-10 or so.
https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...r+bass+fishing

In general, keep things simple. In clearer water/bright days, fish smaller and light colors. Darker, larger baits in murky water/low light.

Soft plastics like worms (I like Roboworms and Berkeley Power Worms/baits) are a go-to in most freshwater., 4"-6" most of the time.

Oh, we're in spring, so use a lot of white colored baits. White and Red, otherwise known as "clown" should be top producers at this time of year.

Play around with sink rate; try some light weighted lures for slow falling action, and some heavy baits, until the fish tell you what they want to eat.

Work baits slower this time of year, faster as the water warms up.

Anyway, hope some of that helps.

Megatron96 04-05-2023 12:09 PM

Basic tutorial on how to bass fish in the spring, prespawn. I'm guessing that where you guys are, this is what stage the fish are at:
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EqGZrpgqY8c" title="EARLY SPRING Bass Fishing COMPLETE GUIDE (How To Locate Prespawn Bass)" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Here, we already have fish beginning to bed.

ChiefsFan63 04-05-2023 01:11 PM

I fished some farm ponds on Monday with Dad, wife, and daughter. We caught over 20 largemouth bass total, cleaning 11. Biggest was 2 1/2 pounds. It was a great day to fish. The water was fairly muddy, but I've seen much worse. They were still pretty light in color and the bite was kind of light. Fish tacos that night were AMAZING!!!

I might have to make one of these with my son. Probably not as fun as plinking them with a .22

The cost of the round is about the same .22lr I think was $.06 and the .223 were like $.07. Have thousands of both, just like tearing shit up

Ha. Way to go. This reminds me of as a kid we got to fish a farmers pond out by Medicine Lodge it was drying up so the farmer said catch all we can and we were making a game not to catch fish and we would catch them without bait. We caught over 20 that we took home to fry. What a badass day that was. Never had a day like that again. We were throwing in hooks and reeling in as fast as we could and still catch them lol

It's sad though when farm ponds dry up.

Oh the rifle is definitely more fun.

But a floating trap like that is EFFECTIVE.

We could clean out a pond in a couple of days.

Some pics of some of the fish I caught a couple three weeks ago

Some kind of shad, about a foot long:

Common carp, less than 10 lbs

Another common, over 25 inches

Silly cat

Funny thing is, they all ate the exact same fly, a clown Clouser minnow I tied maybe 15 years ago. So did the three white bass I caught that day, though for some reason I can't find the pics of those fish. Post when i find them.

For some reason during run-off all these fish like clown clousers more than any other fly pattern. I've tried maybe a hundred different patterns over the years when the AF was running properly, and many catch fish, but if I had to bet money on the catch rate, the clown would probably out-fish everything else as much as 10:1.

Even that silly shad ate one, and shad are plankton feeders. That thing's mouth would barely fit the eraser of a No. 2 pencil, but somehow he got his mouth around that clouser. And why would he try and eat a minnow imitation? Fish are funny creatures sometimes. Probably has something to do with having a brain the size of a pea.

They're everywhere. Some places they're a real problem. But anywhere there's more than 18 inches of water in the valley there's carp.

Because Vrach never called me for my opinion on who to draft yesterday I went fishing. I just had to go. It was windy as **** so I had to move sides of the lake to have the wind behind my back. Finally as it got dusk the wind died down and recasted my lines as I was casting my second line I caught this one on my first line. Love it when that happens. I expected a catfish but was pleasantly surprised it was a LM Bass. So that tickled me fancy. Fishing therapy is the best therapy.

That wind kicked my ass though I'm not a young whipper snapper anymore.

Trying to fish the ocean in a kayak has always looked like a bad idea IMHO

It's usually good fun. A lot of fish can drag you around out there. Makes for a lot of giggles. Can get too hot, currents can drag you pretty far before you notice, wind can make getting anywhere you want to go a huge PITA, but sharks aren't usually a normal issue. Never had one be a problem, and only saw them too close for comfort a couple times. Dolphins can scare the crap out of you until you figure out they aren't sharks.

I love Kayak fishing buy I'd need a bigger Kayak to fish the ocean like the size of a yacht.

Went Sturgeon fishing last week on the Willamette River in Oregon. It was a blast. There were 5 of us in the boat and we caught 18 total in 6 hours. Catch and release only. anything under 54" you can pull into the boat. anything longer has to stay in the water. Our guide measured the big ones in the water with a piece of rope looped on one end. I pulled up a 72" monster (for me anyway). It took me 30 min to get it to the boat. I'd get him within 50 feet of the boat and he would take off 200 feet. Those are some odd fish. Look prehistoric to me

That sounds like a blast. Congrats on landing the big one. What is the estimated weight of that?

I am pretty sure he weighed around 100lbs. One of the guys in our boat caught one a bit shorter but the girth was over 30". It had to be closer to 130 lbs. That one took him about 50 min to get to the boat.
They are the strangest looking fish I have ever hooked. The spines are like ice picks.

Never had it (sturgeon) and I don't eat lobster. The guide said sturgeon is ok, but the river sturgeon are a bit gamey.

Opinions on 9-12’ rods for shore fishing for crappie. Brands you like etc. ultra light, light, medium light. Or do you just prefer 6-7’? Give me some opinions

9-12'? Are you trying to jig in timber?

I know of several spots on a few small lakes and decent sized ponds up here in Iowa that they put Christmas trees with cinder blocks tied to hold them down and they put them out on the ice and once it melts it sinks. Got pictures on my phone of them still sitting on the ice so I’ve landmarked the spots. Lots are going to be hard to cast to on windy days. These spots from shore I will jig from yes but also minnows and a slip bobber. I have the ultra light 5-5.5’ rods but want to try one with some length to help cast to the further out spots once they move into deeper areas. I have plenty of reels so trying out a 10-12’ one for 40-80 bucks is worth a shot. Just never used one before

Just tie a little weight to your dynamite

I kinda like this idea. Gonna need more buckets and a bigger net

ptlyon 06-20-2023 02:39 PM

And where in Iowa?
