I’m more worried about our pass rush than Kelce/Tyreek getting injured.

Frank Clark is all we have at DE. Danna isn’t a starter and neither is Taco. That really worries me.

Sure they can get Ingram, but I still think they need depth. It’s the weakest spot on the team right now by far.

Right. Basically any position other than RB, QB, OT, and DT.

We have the best interior pass rush duo in the league in Jones and Reed. We’ll be fine.

Agree to disagree. I don't really like Ojulari at all. Wasn't a big fan of Ford either but neither of them really fit what I want in a 4-3 DE.

I’m not advocating for starting him at LDE. He’d be a situational pass rusher this year and take over for Clark next year, but I absolutely think he can play RDE.

Carlos Basham is the only one I’d trade up for. And a small trade up not going to early 2nd.

One of Ossai, Perkins or Ojulari will be there at 58. If we grade them high take em

staylor26 04-30-2021 10:40 AM

I still can’t get over my draft crush Quinn Meinerz and would be thrilled if he’s one of our picks today, even if I prefer other positions.

smithandrew051 04-30-2021 10:40 AM

As much as I would love Basham, I’m sure he’ll be gone. Same with JOK.

Each remaining WR has some sort of issue, either size or durability (or both).

Really looking like we’ll grab a DB for sure and probably an OL, TE, or LB.

As long as we get value at our slot, I’m happy. You never complain about drafting a good player.

Chris Meck 04-30-2021 10:42 AM

Danna's fine as an early down DE. Sign Ingram to be your situational pass rusher. Then your Danna/Ingram/Taco/Ward has some depth. Absolutely draft a guy if you can, but don't reach.

They're big safeties. Which is fine, but if that's what we want, take a safety.

I'd rather have a LB like Gay that can play all 3 downs.

Because you're likely going to have to trade away picks to get him. Thats really not good value in this draft.

And also, if Niang pans out and Long returns to form, then this is already an elite OL. Blythe just has to be a good run blocker and not a complete liability in pass pro.

But if the Chiefs have two stud LB's, they're not gonna park one on the sideline. They're going to get his ass on the field and adjust their scheme accordingly.

This regime has been here long enough though to show they just don't seem to value the LB spot like we fans do.

Kind of the same way they've done with CB's.

Especially in Spags system, LB just doesn't seem to be of priority. DE does though. But I don't think there's much value where we'll be.

Who knows.

I’ve really warmed up to Jabril Cox. He made a huge jump from NDSU to LSU and was a one of the best defenders on the Tigers. I don’t think a guy like that will have trouble translating to the NFL.

He’s like a bigger, faster version of Deion Jones. Plus he’d surely get Neiman’s ****ing ass off the field

He just seems a bit redundant with Gay in taht they're very similar players. I'd be ok with it, more so with the 2nd 2nd round pick, but it woudln't be my preference.

gblowfish 04-30-2021 10:52 AM

I watched the draft last night. Glad the Faiders over-reached for their guy. Glad the Bolts took a tackle instead of a skill position guy. Glad the Donks took a corner. They've had good corners before and we still beat them passing. I think our biggest need at this point is linebacker. They need an inside guy. If they can sign Ingram from the Bolts, he would be kind of like when we got Suggs two years ago. Hopefully Gay will come back healthy, and we can find somebody in this years draft to add to the mix. Also need corner help. We can probably get by with what we have on offense right now. But if a good tight end falls in their lap, sure. I also think (although I know I'm in the minority here) there's an outside chance they could bring Schwartz or Fisher back mid season if they are healthy enough to play. Fisher may never be a left tackle again, but may be a decent right tackle or guard once he heals. Schwartz.....hmmm....back problems are not good for big guys. He was super reliable before the injury. We'll just have to see what happens there. Chances are the Chiefs will just try to develop younger guys, but if we get injuries on the line again, who knows? Very excited to actually have picks tonight, and the draft will move faster. That's a good thing too. Here's to Bruce Valanche doing that voodoo that he do soooo wellllllll !!!

They said last year Gay was going to play Wilson's position. Cox would be playing on the opposite side in 3-LB sets.

That's just the thing.

With Gay on that side and Cox on the other, you could slide back into nickel and keep Gay on the field. Cox would roll over into the Sorenson role.

They complement each other well enough, and have enough athleticism, that you could keep both of them on the field for all 3 downs theoretically.

He's a bad ass. Seems like other teams value Mizzou players more than the Chiefs do. They've had a couple, but not many. Daniel, Morse, Maclin, Henry Marshall. And that kid they played on the O-Line last year.

And if Ward gets what the market usually sets for FA CB's, we'd be better off letting him go, just like we did with Nelson.

We need more corners. We absolutely do.

Here? He hardly got a chance. He did play very well in his 1 game before getting hurt, even got a sack if I remember right. He played fantastic back in college. He was very inconsistent in his early days back in NYC though he definitely finished the year on a strong note. I have no idea where you got the idea he was awful. He had growing pains as all rooks do.

Fast LB's = Fast Defense.

You wanna take this D's athleticism up a notch, you get some rangy sideline to sideline thumpers that'll meet a back in the hole with violent intentions.

I watched him play. He wasn't a "baller". They know exactly zero about what they have in him and counting on him to be a long-time starter would be a fool's errand at this point.

They still need corners and there's going to be excellent value at the end of the 2nd round. They'd be doing themselves a great disservice if they passed on that value because they have Deandre Baker on a 1-year deal.

I agree that we shouldn't trade picks to move up. But if for some reason he falls, that would be my pick.

It also doesn't appear there will be elite talent at defensive end available at 63. So I'd like to see one of the top two remaining tight ends, if still there. I'm enticed by the idea of having an actual weapon on the other side of the formation from Kelce. And I would almost always prefer getting a top 1-3 elite player at a "lesser" position than the 9th or 10th best player at a "premium" position. Particularly if that "lesser" position is one of need, like tight end is for the Chiefs.

Yea having 2 fast/rangy LB’s automatically makes you a good defense as long as the rest of it is even slightly above average.

Yes....we still need a LB.

Agreed. Somehow, LBs seem have fallen down the totem pole just above FBs. TEs have done much damage against the Chiefs over the past several yrs, and fast, aggressive LBs still create lots of turnovers, which were in short supply last year. We don't need Singletary, but sure would be nice to have a 6'4" athlete that can cover (cough* Jabril Cox)

I love small school finds. One of the few methods to obtain elite physical talent in later rounds.

staylor26 04-30-2021 11:06 AM

Honestly, I think trading back and getting an early 4th would really be ideal.

2. Dyami Brown, WR, North Carolina
3. Elijah Molden, CB, Washington
4. Kendrick Green, C/OG, Illinois
4. Janarius Robinson, EDGE, Florida State
5. Jamien Sherwood, S, Auburn
5. Tre McKitty, TE, Georgia
6. Buddy Johnson, LB, Texas A&M

I agree with you that we could always use more DBs. You can't go wrong with them nowadays. I took issue with you calling a former 1st rd pick a bum when the Chiefs seem to think differently. There's no way after his injury that they'd sign him to a long term deal, but he definitely seems to be in our plans.

I'd be willingly to bet that he's starting by the end of the season. Injuries aside of course.

His foot issue is concerning, especially with the lack of interactions teams had with the prospects this year. Tougher to get your team doctor to assess the situation and with as much as the public is hearing about it, I can only assume there even more we don’t know about in regards to it.

If he ends up falling to our picks that could be rather telling and at that point it may be a better move to just go another route.

We really need a quality DE to play opposite of Clark. We lost Wilson and we started Neimann last year. Hopefully Willie Gay can stay healthy but we still need more talent at LB.

You don’t draft positions. You draft players.

you do both

You move up and down to get the best play you can at the positions you need. We have 2 picks in the 2nd. Veech needs to get the best DE and LB he can by using those 2 picks.

Frank Clark is all we have at DE. Danna isn’t a starter and neither is Taco. That really worries me.

Sure they can get Ingram, but I still think they need depth. It’s the weakest spot on the team right now by far.

Remember though, Chris Jones likely plays 30-50% of his snaps on the edge this season (similar to the 2019-2020 playoff run) based on comments Veach/Reid made after the Reed signing. Reed allows them to move Jones around.

Clark-Reed-Nnadi/Saunders-Jones (in the snaps that Jones is wide) is one of the best DLines in the league. I personally think Taco and Danna are solid enough to spell that rotationally. I would still love to add a DE in the 2nd or 4th looking forward to next year, but I think Veach has set us up for flexibility at edge and we aren’t forced to take one today.

No.

You don't reach for a position.

KC is not in a spot where they have no way to fill a hole without reaching.

We do need help at those spots but you don't reach to do it. There are still free agents out there, and there will be more post draft.

Stay true to your board, don't reach, and take the best player.

Moving up and down to get the best player value for your pick is NOT reaching.

It doesn’t work like that. Trades don’t just happen because you want them too unless you’re willing to overpay.

I think our d-line situation is good. I think one more real rush threat would make it elite. I don't think you should reach for a guy when that's the case.

There are a couple of guys that might make it to us in the 2nd. If they don't, there are more that may be there in the 4th.

Don't reach.

What you're talking about is the opposite of player value.

You don't take a guy you have a 4th round grade on in the second because you feel a need at that position. That's BAD player value.

There's no way after his injury that they'd sign him to a long term deal, but he definitely seems to be in our plans.

I'd be willingly to bet that he's starting by the end of the season. Injuries aside of course.

I never said he was a bum but he's certainly not somebody you can just pencil in. Between his up and down play, the off-field issues, and his injury he'll be lucky to be not the roster a year from now. He's a long shot if there ever was one. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

sure it does.

Good drafters do it all the time. If the guy they want will last longer they move down. If the guy they want won't last to their pick they move up. Really good drafters pick up more when they move down than they have to pay when they move up so all the moving around doesn't cost them too much.

Ozzie Newsome was a good one

One of the 2nd round picks should be an athletic SPARQ hero on defense

Exactly how I feel. And assuming that Clark is cut after this season, we have next to nothing at DE for 2022. I don’t mind the logic of looking ahead (we should be and Veach does). But that same logic applies to C, WR, CB, and LB. I think our 2021 amd 2022 needs are roughly equal at multiple positions. I’m right there with you - take BPA and don’t reach,
