Just got home last night from a trip to Moab, UT and Ouray, CO. We took a 4WD trip through Corkscrew pass near the peak of Red Mountain in the San Juan mountain range, where I took this panoramic shot.

https://i.imgur.com/eaLabSo.jpgI took this yesterday.
Hefty storm went through. Killed my well motor so I went out to start it. Lightning also struck an oil tank battery. Out here they just have to let those burn. FD makes sure nothing else is at risk and then let it go. There just isn’t the equipment to put those out out here. So there’s a lot of smoke right? Well the air was doing weird shit. It was dead ass calm where I was several miles away, but obviously it wasn’t calm the whole way. The fire is in the bottom right of the picture. |
That's a really cool photo.

On the topic of meteorology, we had this rainbow a few weeks ago. I thought the color difference over and under the rainbow, and between the two bands of the rainbow, were quite unusual.

Rain man and buehler great pictures!
Brings back memories of watching the storms at Fort Hays State We had a lightening strike once and the clouds were on the other side of town |

I had a run-in working on the new army max disciplinary barracks that was going to be one of the sites to house Guantanamo prisoners of war when Obama was to close them. It didn't happen and became the permanent home of the Army bad of the bad prisoners. The existing Military Disciplinary Barracks is where I had my run in. I was told by construction super I was free to go anywhere on the base that wasn't inside a security fence. I drove my truck around a ring road outside the perimeter of the barracks. I took a dirt trail up a steep 3:1 slope that was at about 80 feet above the Disciplinary Barracks. Then a military ring road guard pulled up while I was setting a tripod with GPS unit. Sternly told me to spread legs facing my truck with hands against topper side panels. He slowly walked toward me with an M4 rifle frisked me and took my leatherman. Then questioned me while holding his finger outside the trigger. This was a kid that couldn't be 20 years old but he meant business. Anyway, I was cuffed taken to the office questioned we had permits and I had gone through Federal background checks. I was released and allowed to retrieve my truck and equipment. I went to JE Dunn supers trailer office and gave him a piece of my mind and he wouldn't get his control point in that location. He blew his stake and was on phone to base commander. I got an apology and was able to go about anywhere outside the fencing. |

I just read that this thing can be seen every morning? I assumed it was going to be here and gone like a thief in the night.

Left the house to go exercise. The house next door had an Osprey sitting on a pole with its lunch, a sea trout.

We have the tallest tree on the Island where we live. An Osprey built a nest there. It seems to have squawking babies there year around for the last 3 years. |

If you go to the link, you get HTTP ERROR 401, which is 'unauthorized'... so, it's not public beyond BRC's Amazon. BRC might be able to see it though, because it's his picture and cached in the browser. Also, image tags don't do well if the URL doesn't point directly to the picture... in this case, instead of CP trying to hit and display amazon.com/TroutUpAPole.jpg, it's just going to some page, and one that it can't reach.
via Gfycat
|

I threw 20K+ pics up on Amazon for safekeeping. They are pretty liberal with their pic storage options. Vids, not so much. |

Hell, my truck went through security every day had to open all doors and hood. I was to stand to the side present my driver's license and JE Dunn contractor ID card couldn't miss it on my belt. That truck is full of sledgehammers shovels brush hooks and machetes all sorts of sharp pointy things. I dont blame the guard just doing his job. |

The golf course I played last Friday in The Villages, drove my own cart to the course. It's not as tough as it looks, didn't lose one ball. This is Belle Glade, we have 12 championship courses and 10 are 27 hole layouts like this one. We have 40 executive courses, which are 9 hole layouts of Par 3 and Par 4's, they're free. Summer rate was for this course was $36.
https://scontent-atl3-2.xx.fbcdn.net...14&oe=5FB7C823 My courtyard villa home in The Villages I bought new 9 years ago for $157K. I do my own landscaping, no grass to cut, so it's not that hard. The screen on the garage door keeps out lizards, snakes and bugs and yet you can leave the door up all day. Yes, the Sylvester Palm on the right needed trimming, I took care of that last week. The way to retire is to clear enough off your last house to pay cash for this one. No mortgage and amenity fee, TV, water, sewage, electric and phone/internet maybe $500 a month. This photo is about 2 months old and all the shrubs have just about doubled in size since then. https://scontent-atl3-2.xx.fbcdn.net...15&oe=5FB66428 Maybe some of you guys can post a photo of your home, it would be interesting to see how everyone else lives in the various parts of our country. |
Nice place, DeepPurple. When I did my retirement location study in that thread a while back, Florida ranked pretty high for me. My wife has given it the spousal veto due to humidity, but if I was the king I'd definitely consider it as an eventual retirement location.

When I lived up in Maryland, I found half of the days in August it would hit 100, it never goes above 95 here. Humidity, isn't that what air conditioning is for? Come January when it's bitter cold in most places, we're about 70 degrees, if it goes down to 50 then that's really cold. The Villages is still the fastest growing area in America, they sell about 200 new homes a month. Unfortunately all the homes are across the Florida Turnpike, they had to built three golf cart bridges for everyone to get from the new area to the established areas. This bridge crosses SR 44. The established area is 35 square miles and 2020 census was 127,000 people. https://cdn2.thevillages.com/wp-cont...-1500x1001.jpg https://cdn2.thevillages.com/wp-cont...005-scaled.jpg My golf cart, 2011 Yamaha I bought new. I think we'll go to McDonalds for lunch and get an Egg McMuffin. https://scontent-atl3-2.xx.fbcdn.net...8d&oe=5FB7F7FB |

I love storms. This was 2 years and 2 weeks ago, just east of where I live. Pretty sizable rotation in the rear with a massive powerful downdraft in front of it.

Here's a couple of photos of a shelf cloud as a strong storm rolled through. The first photo is of the cloud itself. The 2nd is a closeup of the front edge, where the wind gusts were strong enough to create a debris cloud.

Probably the only thing I ever really miss about KC are the storms. Thanks for the pics. They are really good.

Finally, this really isn't weather but it's cool.
It's not the sun, it's actually the moon and it was pitch black outside save for a black light behind me. I was testing the night mode on my iPhone 11 Pro. |

We don't really see big storm fronts in Denver. The mountains are to our west and they tend to disrupt things. While approaching storms are sometimes scary looking, they were interesting to see when I was growing up in the Midwest. |
