According to Terez Paylor on Twitter Chiefs had $3.5 million in cap space and top 3 picks are going to be 4.5 mil

I feel they could have cut someone else to make up that difference

That would be terrible.

What's the difference? No one felt that KC had a chance to be in a SB with the QB anyway. No way Maclin would perform well enough to justify being kept in 2018... so get it over with, right?

Unexpected move, but there had to be really good logic in doing this, at this time.

Not really.

Smith didn't throw a TD to a WR in 2014 and the Chiefs missed the playoffs.

The bottom line is that Maclin is done.

He served his purpose but that time has passed.

Last year? Fine, whatever. He missed 5 games and by the time he came back Reek & Kelce were the focal points, but fine, he was disappointing last year.

But it's mind boggling how KU scum somehow just forget 2015.

Not hard to replace 500 ypg.

Meatloaf 06-02-2017 07:34 PM

Wonder if a part of the thinking is to give a younger WR additional playing time in preparation for 2PM taking over in a year or two? Plus, it sure sounds like we got ourselves in a cap bind.

Anyong Bluth 06-02-2017 07:35 PM

Who would have guessed Sylvester Morris would end up having a longer career with the Chiefs than Jeremy Maclin...

??????????????????????

The irony is that the type of QB Maclin needs to catch passes is 2PM.

Guess how many WR's other than Maclin have had an 1,000 yard receiving season with Bubble Screen Alex Smith as their starting QB, during Smith's 11 year career with both the 49ers and Chiefs?

That would be zero, no other WR's with the Chiefs or 49ers.

Roster is one of the most well rounded in the league, but let's piss away trying to win this year because we traded up for a QB. You know what the success rate of round 1 QBs over the last 15 years is?

I understand we're uncharted territory drafting a signal caller in the 1st, but it's not the GD Twilight Zone.

JakeF 06-02-2017 07:46 PM

If we don't spend the 10 million for this year then it's pretty clear what we are doing.

kcchiefsus 06-02-2017 07:47 PM

If we didn't already, now we definitely have the biggest pile of shit at WR in our division.

It would be interesting to know the whole story. Even over paid, he still has value that is difficult to replace.

Which of those receivers had an ACL tear?

Which of those receivers missed multiple games?

Which of those players disappeared in the playoffs?

If you want to use those as reasons, go right ahead. But just to say "he's 29" is a silly argument. And how many of them have even played in playoff games?

Signing the draft choices, the top 3, is a big part of the move. They released Howard. If you look at the top players and their salary and cap # there wasn't many candidates to clear some room. The need a 5-7 mil cushion to be under the cap for injuries, potential extensions etc. there was minimal choices to restructure. Hali they don't want to redo again and he has a cap #/structure that would screw them. And DJ and Sherman already took paycuts. Harris Zombo Jah Reid...those are minimal savings. Ideally in their mind I think they would have preferred to hang onto and release next year. But tough choices have to be made and that's what successful teams do no matter if there's an emotional attachment or not. Otherwise they were facing doing something with a Smith restructure and to get them that cushion. No way that was happening but that's the choices they basically had.

Makes sense why Trip McCracken wasn't renewed as the main cap guy and Brandt Tillis was promoted plus another legal counsel/cap guy was also brought in. Ultimately that buck stops with Dorsey. But he's obviously lost confidence in Trip who when he kept him on there in '13 Dorsey praised as one of the best. So not quite ideal but once you consider all factors and lack of productivity it makes more and more sense. They were super tight against the cap with few options
