They seem to be one in the same...

Go baby!
|
The landing attempt may be more exciting to look at than the launch. :)
|
Still cool every time I see a launch.

Barge view froze. Nooooo!

Landing pad camera froze. Damn.
Doesn't sound like it made it. |

The guys in the SpaceX control room look like they are still in high school. Sheesh. Most of them can't be older than 25.

Came in on target but too hard. Broke a leg. Is not upright.
Might have caught the barge on an ocean swell. Looked choppy out there. |

Well, damn. Apparently they need to build islands in the ocean to land on in the future.

Interesting idea DaFace.... What about an deep sea oil rig like set up?

On a side note, SpaceXStats has launched with a new web site with all sorts of info about past/future missions, as well as the most informative "live" feed I've seen:

On a side note, why are they testing from California? You lose delta-v on a westward burn as opposed to burning east like they do in Florida. Taking advantage of the earths rotation helps a lot.

Looks like a successful deployment, so primary mission success! I'm starting to think that the barge may be the issue rather than the rocket, so we'll see what happens in the future as they try and get the water landing figured out. Next launch is in 3 weeks on February 6th! |

Hopefully they can keep working out these little bugs. On the plus side, they wouldn't have been able to actually reuse this one anyway since it was the old-style body (1.1) and wouldn't have been compatible with the full-thrust anyway. |
Man. It was right on.

This is a failure, but it may be my favorite video yet. Great shot of it coming down and landing, but the leg just didn't lock. Bonus awesome explosion.

Here's a fan-created video that compares the three barge landing attempts. It's pretty clear from this that it's not just random chance - they're definitely getting things fine-tuned each time. I'll give the February 6th launch a 75% chance of sticking the landing on a barge finally.

They had it stuck too. So freaking close.

Hope I'm not breaking a rule here (Blue Origin vs. SpaceX), but the New Shepard just flew again. The same one that flew in November:

It's cool that they were able to reuse it relatively easily, and I hope that bodes well for SpaceX's reusability program as well. It almost seems inevitable that reusable rockets are the way of the future at this point. I do hope that Blue Origin eventually figures out how to do something more useful than shuttling tourists up and down to "space," but more innovation is certainly what we need in the industry, so they're to be commended regardless. |

Indeed, it's almost like the early days of the space race between us and the Soviets. The race to be first. I welcome the competition. |

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Launch is scheduled for 5:46 p.m. Central on Wednesday (2/24). Weather's looking a little iffy at the moment, though - currently a 60% chance of favorable conditions. That said, there's about a 1.5-hour launch window, so hopefully they'll find a break in the weather there somewhere long enough to get it off the ground. |

Sounds like they're not very optimistic about landing this one. It's a HEAVY payload, so they can't boost back to land at all, and the barge landing will be way out there with little room for error in terms of fuel requirements. We'll see.
EDIT: Here's an actual tweet about it. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">.<a href="https://twitter.com/SpaceX">@SpaceX</a> on tomorrow night's launch and sea-landing attempt: "Given this mission’s unique GTO profile, a successful landing is not expected"</p>— Eric Berger (@SciGuySpace) <a href="https://twitter.com/SciGuySpace/status/702185800864124928">February 23, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |

SpaceXStats now has a "live" page for launches, which is pretty cool. You can pick what stream you want at the top, and a twitter-style update feed below with all the details. You can even do a side-by-side view of both the "glossy" feed and the "technical" feed if you want.

Damn. I was hoping to watch before I left work. Now I'm worried I might be on the way home during the launch. :sulk: |
Bah. Scrubbed due to weather. Same time tomorrow.

Ugh... I'll need to tape it, hockey starts for they younger son at 4:45!

You have the technology to do both...

Sounds like the scrub wasn't weather related, so there goes my "smooth sailing" observation.
http://i.imgur.com/xDuuIrZ.png It sounds like they're still working out some of the kinks with the new supercooled LOX (only used before on the launch that landed in December), so hopefully they'll get that figured out with this one. |
An abundance of caution? WTF?

Quote:
So it's kind of like saying, "I think I've got enough fuel to drive 100 miles, and I only need to go 80, so I SHOULD be fine. But if I wait until tomorrow, the wind will be at my back, so I might as well wait just to be safe." EDIT: For a more techy hypothesis: Quote:

Not a cloud in the sky here at the Cape. Hope the wind eases a bit. Should be a nice launch.
