Peaky Blinders season 3 just released. Looks like I've got some binging to do this week. Sucks that it's also a busy work week.
|
My wife and I have been watching Penny Dreadful on Showtime. It's a horror series set in 19th Century London. If you like Dracula, Frankenstein, and witches then I highly recommend it.

If you're looking for just plain laughs from something new, Lady Dynamite is new on Netflix and delivers pretty dang good.
It's a vehicle for Maria Bamford. She's a standup most would know as the member of the backup Fantastic Four that hung out with Tobias' 'The Thing' in the reboot of Arrested Development. Mitchell Hurwitz is a co-creator, so it has a strong Arrested Development vibe with jokes piled on jokes piled on sight gags piled on callbacks. It also has a ton of celeb guests, some who play wacky characters, some who play themselves. It's real strength is in off the wall, unexpected humor. As a plot, it's mostly your typical neurotic stand-up messed up life story, broadly adapted. But there's so many sight gags, and funny names, and off-the-wall asides that will trigger your chuckle center, including some well-honed and crafted rants. I don't want to oversell it, and I certainly don't want to give away any of my favorite gags, so I'll just leave it at 'give it a couple episodes, see if it grows on you.' <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1gSxKR0Cirs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Oh, and to save the inevitable search after watching a couple of episodes. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nhagVcjOPZE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Did anyone catch the premiere of 'Braindead'
A mix of absurd and real covering alien takeover of American federal politics by the creators of The Good Wife. I've been effusive about The Good Wife being the best show on network TV, and this one, though very different in tone, is off to a promising start. http://www.avclub.com/review/cbs-pol...bracesi-237963 |

The wife and I are looking to start a new series tonight after work. We've got it narrowed down to three:
Ray Donovan Peaky Blinders Game of Thrones (We're caught up on Game of Thrones, but are contemplating starting over from the beginning.) Which of these three should we watch? |

And damn... Cillian Murphy is such a quality freaking actor in the role. Unfortunately, Tom ****ing Hardy steals the show every time he's on the screen. |
I'm sure most here will hate this but I love Wayward Pines.

Such a good fit, yet I never thought of it until I heard it. |
American Horror Story should have copied off of S7ven a little more w/ their intro. GOOD GOD!

If you can power through it, I don't doubt you'll be rewarded with some amazing scenes on occasion, but to watch and pay attention all the way through is so exhausting, and if you don't pay full attention you usually end up lost. Even the first episode of People -v- OJ was nerve wracking as you could see Murphy's fingerprints on it. But his influence gratefully receded as the series went on. |

luther, misfits, shameless (UK), black mirror, the code (AU), housos, utopia (UK). just a few obscure, not so popular shows that are really good.
not sure if they've been mentioned. |

I meant to check out the UK version when the US version started, but it was so good in its own right I just stuck with it. |
Quote:
overall, i would say the UK version is better, but it takes time to get used to the characters as you would not know anything about them. i have yet to see anyone from the cast in any other thing except for frank. he had a bit part in hot fuzz as the theater director. warning: binge watching both shows with all the dysfunction makes you want to head butt something :D |
speaking of shameless us...
fiona reminds me of peg bundy. that bitch thinks shes entitled to everything regardless of how bad she ****s things up. you just want to slap the shit outta her. off topic but another show, i have mentioned on another thread, but Fortitude is a great tv show.... it does have one character from shameless uk now i think about it. |

If you aren't watching Quarry, you should be.
Two episodes in... it's a slow, artsy burn... but it's good. Really interesting characters, great use of music, excellent capture of the south of the early 70s and the cultural milieu. |
First two episodes of Quarry are available on youtube, if you don't have Cinemax:

Season 4 of Luther just hit Netflix. I know I've crowed about it before but if you haven't seen Luther do it today (presuming they don't magically drop the ball on S 4)

Caught the Last Kingdom.
Pretty damn good. Decent Violence. A lot going on, but didn't get wonky - other than the main character ****ing everything with an axe wound, so it kind of diluted the whole love thing. Definitely pick it up if you are into medieval genre flicks. |
Amazon TV has a pretty decent show they put together called "Goliath" which you may find entertaining.

I watched Penny Dreadful. I am not really into horror flicks much. But the production looked good and Eva Green is my weakness.
Like a lot of Horror, there is some wonky writing, but it overcomes it, largely, and most of the story lines are pretty compelling. The exception is Dorian Gray. He is completely useless in the story and takes up a lot of screentime. His character is pretty well acted, but it doesn't advance the storyline. Frankenstein's monster in particular is goddamned compelling, and worth the watch by itself. Jesus, that arc is amazing. Lilly Frankenstein is kind of meh, but how it ends up, particularly with Dr Frankenstein is good, and after they revealed her daughter it helped her story a lot. Ethan Chandler/Vanessa Ives storyline ended up really good. Same with Malcom Murray. Overall, the production is excellent. As well as the acting. It is worth a watch even if you aren't into the horror genre. |
I watched Goliath on Amazon. That is a really good show. Maybe it is because I had low expectations going in, but goddamn, I couldn't quit watching it.
Billy Bob Thornton really brought it. And I don't know how much is makeup or whatever, but he is very convincing about having a lot of mileage on his odometer. Probably because he does. When
Spoiler!
Initially I thought the other lawyer and paralegal characters were bad, but they developed them nicely and wove them into the story. Some of the stuff with Cooperman McBride was kind of wonky, but but you can look past it. Really a good watch if you like lawyer-ey flicks. |
I caught Medici on Netflix.
It was pretty good. I ended up binging it while I was working in the office some. The production values are really really good. So if you are a fan of the Renaissance period in general you need to watch it. But it is kind of a murder mystery/political thriller, so it's kind of cool. Kind of in the same vein as house of cards. However, I caught myself thinking to myself "Oh look, someone is trying to wreck Robb Starks life again." LOL |
Shameless
Arrested Development Breaking Bad |
Has anyone mentioned Family Matters yet ?

Legends of Tomorrow is really bad.

Currently enjoying very much season 1 of Netflix "The Crown".

I'm glad, because the end was kind of a let down. The Crown is a fairly accurate historical account of the monarchy and its workings in the late 40's and early 50's. The kicker for me is John Lithgow plays Winston Churchill and he does it very well. |
I can appreciate The Crown for its accuracy and how well it's done but overall I just find it kind of boring. We watch it but I don't find myself watching an episode and then absolutely having to watch the next one right away. I think we are through five episodes so far.

Anyone watching The Mick?
It's network fluff, but Kaitlin Olsen is a treasure, and that daughter is H O T Hawt!! She's like a Kendall Jenner without all that Kardashian slime on her, a little resemblance to Morena Baccarin as well. |

Finally watched Californication. Some up and down episodes, but the first few seasons were absolutely hilarious. Not sure why it took me so long to get around to it. |
