I've seen rumors the Jags might trade or cut him but they definitely don't have to.

This is the year Vmoney can go for BPA in the draft...not reaching for LT or DE

Transition tag would still be north of $22M, but the positive side is it would quickly resolute itself. Basically would just give KC right to match whatever offer Trey accepts.

That isn't the worst idea in the world. You'd probably know the outcome within hours of free agency.

If you get outbid badly on Bolton and Reid both by surprise, you could always hit the Trey Smith button there and pay him (even if it may be an overpay).

No way I’d pay him that much. Dude really regressed this season, and got his ass kicked in quite a few games. Hard to believe someone already on the roster and much cheaper couldn’t come close to his 2024 campaign.

Transition tag is definitely an option. Franchise tag is just a nonstarter. Trey isn't worth it.

You wouldn't pay him 22M, you'd use the tag as a reservation to match the contract he accepts from someone else.

Odds are you still won't do that, but it may protect them from losing Reid, Bolton, AND Smith.

Am I wrong for only wanting a RG on a rookie deal at this point?

Nah, it makes some sense as long as you adequately address LT.

Because this year proved again and again that having literally the best interior OL in the entire league doesn't matter if your LT sucks.

Dead serious: Chase Young was the only FA we signed I’d be thrilled. I’d take him over Nick Bolton and Trey Smith without question.

I won't go that far.

I'll stand firm that we need to keep at least one of Bolton or Reid. Too much brainpower and tackling ability to lose in an offseason where our offense needs to be the main focus of construction.

RunKC 02-18-2025 12:00 PM

I’d like Justin Reid back at the right price. Safety salaries have been bad recently so who knows.

I hope they don’t cave on Bolton even though I’m expecting them to. He’s not a top 10 LB. Never made a pro bowl or All pro. If someone offers him Fred Warner, Roquan Smith or even Tremaine Edmunds money…yeah it would be a disaster paying that much. If that happens you let him walk.

I wouldn’t be super pissed about Trey if they paid him. I’d get the logic to do that, especially after what just happened. I just don’t see it happening.

This is why if they do the transition tag initially I'll totally understand.

Because with the **** you money going into owners' pockets right now, who is to say some cap rich team isn't going to overpay all these guys just to spite the Chiefs? By now they all see they need to be weakened. What if the Raiders offer Bolton $20M a year?? And then the Jags offer Reid $15M?

It's not insane to think, and in that scenario maybe the transition tag saves us Smith at least. Would be brutal to lose 'em all without bringing in outside talent to offset.
