If you tell something to someone in a truly sincere manner it's impossible to get defensive over it. Just say something like " Hey bro, your breath kind of smells did you forget to brush your teeth today?" then continue on with whatever you were talking about earlier to make him feel less uncomfortable. It's when people feel embarrassed, that's when defense mechanisms start acting up. He'll take note.... rest should be history.

If his teeth are yellow, the bad breath could be coming from bad teeth. Tell him to see a dentist and get that stuff fixed.
