This is EXACTLY how I felt: Well, we know how this movie ends, may as well stick around to watch the show.

And I'm glad I did, but there was no stress.

Question: If James runs through Watson here, is it OPI?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Mahomes and Kelce have done it again!<br><br>: <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/KCvsLAC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#KCvsLAC</a> on NBC<br>: Stream on NFL+ <a href="https://t.co/arbJ1PQ30A">https://t.co/arbJ1PQ30A</a> <a href="https://t.co/PxUuwshbn6">pic.twitter.com/PxUuwshbn6</a></p>&mdash; NFL (@NFL) <a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1594545449838342144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 21, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Because you can see Watson widen out and brace for impact. It's a rub, clear as day.

If Derwin just plows into him, a flag is going to come out, no? And it's probably an OPI?

I would think so. On his podcast, Kelce said that's why he now engages with physicality so violently, because otherwise officials don't notice (he spoke of this in reference to taking that Titans LB helmet off while he was being held, iirc).

But I think part of the rubs are daring the defenders to do it. If you're going to make contact, you better be willing to go 100% with it. And if the refs throw up their hands and say "incidental contact" despite you getting taken out of the play? You just gave up a TD.

I just thought it was pretty hilarious how blatant it was. You don't see screens that strong in an NBA game. He just runs right off Kelce's outside hip, squares James up then as soon as Kelce clears him he turns upfield like it was a designed route of some sort.

Hate those damn things, but everyone does them and I'm not sure how you'd regulate them other than, as you said, training defenders to draw them and referees to be strict in enforcing them.

But they don't get much more obvious than that one was.

Kelce had already beat the defender and there was no contact so that's a clean play.

I always thought the Manning Broncos took the direction of that trend and crossed the rubicon with it at warp speed. I remember when we first matched up with them in 2013 we played bully ball with their receivers setting those picks and took several shots at Welker through that first game, but it was all for naught. The rules are so tilted towards the offense where collisions like that could be called as an illegal contact (being an auto first down), a "both sides" no call (resulting in an offensive big play), and at best, an OPI that gives an elite QB another down to make a play.

I remember feeling so helpless playing the Broncos in 2012-2014 and Brady for that reason. Your defense had to play perfectly with the NFL's hand on the scales for the offense guided by a HOF QB. Now that we have Mahomes it's obviously nice we can take advantage of the direction the league has gone here... but tbh, I don't mind that the two high shell look has neutralized a lot of passing offenses not lead by Patrick Mahomes this year (As a response, the average rushing yards per game is at its highest level its been in 3 decades).

Yes - no question. As it was run, totally clean play.

That's not my question though.

My question is if James continues THROUGH Watson, you'd have plenty of contact and a flag's almost gotta come out there.

I think Pants is right though - defenders just aren't coached to do that because you completely wipe yourself out of the play and you leave the game in the refs hands.

If the defender ran through the WR and he's the one who initiates contact then it could be called on the defense. It would be risky so yeah, they're probably not coached to do it.

Hammock Parties 11-21-2022 03:58 PM

watson ran that air pick perfectly

I wouldn't say he'd be the one who initiates contact here, though.

It's easy to say watching the replay, but again, Watson widens his route and squares his shoulders to make sure he gets in front of James. I think that would technically give James the 'right of way' in that lane and any collision falls on Watson.

There was plenty of room on that play to avoid collision so I don't know. If you're beat for a 1st down or a TD I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

Honestly, the best way to defend it is being physical with Watson on the line to disrupt the timing of it. Look at Watson, he gets a clean release and just has to act like he's getting in the way just enough.

O.city 11-21-2022 04:11 PM

I think as long as Watson attempts to avoid the contact you're probably not getting the call.

That's how I see it. Watson kind of hops upfield to try and avoid contact at the last second. Even if there was a little contact but James doesn't make any attempt to get out of the way, I don't think they call it there.

See - I read that as him hopping upfield to ensure he MAKES contact, or at least impedes the defender.

But that's why I asked the question, I suppose.

I just don't see that as a situation where Watson made an attempt to avoid contact at all.

I don't either. It was run really well. Even if James had tried to make contact, it's not clear the impact is enough to matter. He'd have to flop pretty badly to even draw attention.
