I don't know about using a 2-hander, but I don't think I'd run on a higher difficulty setting without Varric. He gave me a pretty good chuck of xp from chests and traps and if you do his quests a certain way, he does a ridiculous amount of damage due to the way that Bianca upgrades (this is in act 3 IIRC). When I finished the game, he had 4! damage runes on Bianca, along with I think 3 armor runes, so, on the high dragon fight, for instance, I had him decked out in runes so that he was completely immune to fire (so was Aveline), and with 4 cold runes, each giving something like +27 cold damage.

It was insane...

Plus later on in the game I got into using Goad to help Aveline manage aggro, it seemed to work out really well.

As far as 2h vs s/s, I didn't really like running with Fenris, although I'm sure if I'd spent a little more effort setting him up I'd probably have done better.

Half the problem was that he can kill the entire party in one Whirlwind if I'm not paying attention to where I have him. But that wouldn't be an issue on hard.

I only have 1 rune on Varric so far, but he's a straight DPS machine thanks to the Bianca tree. It's nigh overpowered.

Mr. Laz 04-04-2011 03:16 PM

maybe i should go back to aveline, varric and 2 mages

varric is not squishy and can run interference and still do solid damage.

i just fall in love with mages. One mage for pure DPS, 1 for arcane shield and 1 for revive. By dividing up the specialties they can all help DPS.

does the reset potion work for attributes or abilities or both?

I barely even touched the Bianca tree. His personal specialty tree, Marksman, is crazy. He's got one attack that when upgrades shoots 5 bolts, and another that's a knockback that when upgraded does crazy bonus damage to staggered targets (like 800%). Plus he has a song that (IIRC) upgrades attack speed and critical damage. Also has a passive skill that ups his attack speed.

'course I was on nightmare, so I had to be wary about using stuff like Bursting Arrow and Hail of Arrows (they'd kill Aveline...). I mostly stick with single-target damage. By the time the game was over, though, I did have upgraded Pinning Shot and Archer's Lance.

Both, but I would recommend only using it with an NPC, at least until the bug is fixed (it can totally **** up your character).

I think I'm going to try using Sebastian this time. I'm still going to be stuck with Anders, unfortunately, since he's the only one that can heal. So it'll be me (elemental sword and shield), Sebastian, Anders and Merrill. Although maybe I'll do something nutty like me, Sebastian, Isabela and Anders/Merrill. I'm going to romance Isabela, so it might be nice to have her around. Although it seemed to work fine with Merrill without ever taking her anywhere.

Think I'm going to side with the templars this time, and take Merrill and Anders to Rivalry.

right now i'm using Merril

she has Barrier(+50 resist) for tank and arcane shield upgraded (+20% defense, +20 elemental resist for entire party, sustained type)

i'm also using electric and walking bomb and electrical tree with her.

handy stuff but i may have to give her up to become less squishy :(

Yo, that's the one I was talking about. Bianca's song threw me off on the tree name.

Upgraded Bianca's Song pretty much makes him an eye-lazer-shooting cyborg.

I set her up as a blood mage and put all her points in constitution and magic. She was a beast. Ran Blood of the First, Wrath of the Elvhen (which heals her when upgraded, even with Blood of the First) and Rock Armor all the time, gave her the Primal tree. That gave her two AoEs that wouldn't hit my party in Nightmare (Wounds of the Past and Tempest). Put all the +blood magic items I got on her. That's how I'm going to set up up again in my new game. I think she also gets like 10% damage reduction from Rivalry, too, so that will be a boost, too, although Friendship gave her a blood magic bonus.

A lot of it is using the environment, line-of-sighting stuff, but primarily it's about figuring out what elemental type does the most damage to whatever you're fighting.

Speaking of that, here's a list of some of the best damage types, it might help you guys out playing on Hard or NM (I don't think anything is actually immune on any level but Nightmare, but still is still weaker/stronger on the easier settings):
Spoiler!

Wow. Much thanks. This is some great info.
