But we stuck it out anyway,a dn everyone landed some great fish. Don't have all the pics ready for publishing yet, but I thought I'd drop a couple teasers here for now.

Day 2. Winds were 35 kts gusts over 50.

My buddy Big Mac's tent took the worst of it. Bent two poles, tore both the fly and the tent:

My buddy Rod's first 'bow over 24 inches:

20-inch cutthroat taking a siesta after release:

Those are some truly gorgeous fish. That ‘bow looks really nice.

And they are good reminders to me of why I like to stay in a Lodge. The first few years I lived in this state, I would do float trips down some wild Alaska rivers, like the Quinahak and the Goodnews. We usually would not see anybody the whole week. One year, we got dropped off on Saturday and we were set to be picked up a week later at the mouth of the river. It started raining Sunday night. It did not stop until Friday. Set up the rent in the rain, take it down in the rain, stretch the tarp out in the rain so you would have something somewhat dry to eat under... it was truly miserable. Water rose and blew out all the fishing. By the end of the week, every last thing was at least damp, if not actually wet, and sometimes even sopping wet.

Ever since, I will stay somewhere and go with a guide. They have boats, which I certainly cannot transport out to the Bush, and they know where to go even if the weather is bad. Not to mention that there’s always backup in case things go bad and remote Alaska is not really a place where you want it go to bad.

So even if it’s raining in the morning, I’ve slept in a dry, soft bed. Coffee made by someone else calls to me while Breakfast is hot and filling. I can put my waders on under the eaves. It might rain all day, but I know that I will be able to get out of my wet waders and into a dry martini, so to speak. That makes a huge difference because rain means cold, the type of damp cold that just leeches the heat out of your body.

Don’t get me wrong. Looks like a great trip and great fishing and I’m definitely envious of the browns and cuts. But I’m just too damn old to deal with the combination of wind and rain and tents anymore. So I play it safe.

Megatron, I’m planning a fly trip to WY in late august/early September. We have a few spots identified but would love any tips you might have with regard to location.

Truth about pressure this year, everyone and their trashy dog is out there this year for lack of anything else to do

All the proof you need is in the fact that Bass Pro/Cabelas sells out of any decent casting combo that goes in stock nearly the same day. I tried to snag the Pro Qualifier II they had a few weeks ago and was told it sold out in 15 mins in all 3 local stores.

Everyone’s bored, so suddenly everyone’s a fisherman. For a guy like me trying to launch a fishing apparel brand that’s great, but for a guy like me just trying to fish it ****ing sucks.

I've only fished a couple rivers in WY thus far. The Green and Ham's Fork just outside of Kemmerer. I'll ask Big Mac for some spots. If he gives my anything, I'll PM you.

Just remembered a conversation we had during the trip around the campfire. I know the names Snake R., Firehole, East Fork of the Wind R., and the North Platte (Gray Reef) were mentioned as future landing spots. Maybe Mac will give me slightly more specific coordinates. Standby.

I will say right now that if you're looking for very technical, very challenging fishing, Ham's Fork is the place. relatively small water, slow moving and clear, overgrown steep-sided banks, 6x or smaller tippet a necessity and torpedoes the main quarry.

Guys I could use some pointers. Just moved back to KC (Overland Park area). Been years so I don’t remember the local scene real well. Where are some good spots close by to fish? I would love to take my sons out over the next few weeks. Also if any of you live in the area and have kids in the 8-12 range, and you want to do a fishing meetup, let me know. Thanks

Forgot the last challenge: 20+ mph winds. But if you get a fish to rise, it's like trying to wrangle a donkey with 20 ft. of dental floss.

I like his style, and the drop shot is a great rigging tip

My tip for hot and clear mid afternoon conditions is throw the book at shade and cover

Fished the local, beaten to death lake last week and got a nice 4 pound largemouth... I’d thrown everything at this shady bay, particularly the shady side of this one big overhanging tree

My trusty beetle spinner, a Texas rig plastic and a Rapala crank bait... and NOTHING worked til I went old school with live red wigglers and a bobber on a tiny bait hook

Megatron96 08-11-2020 08:28 PM

Man lives in OK.

My tip for August fishing: Stay home with the A/C turned way down.

Just kidding.

Something me and my friend Howard came up with: Tie a gold/silver double barrel swivel to your line, then tie about a foot of line to the other end of the swivel. Then tie on a 1/0-2/0 hook and slip (Texas rig) a 6-inch straight tail onto the hook.

Note: this is what we used to call a 'weightless T-rig,' and you have to use either a spinning rig or an ultralight baitcasting rig to cast the thing.

Anyway, cast to weeds, deadfalls, shadelines, rip-rap, some kind of structure that would get fish out of direct sunlight. Then on a semi-tight line allow the rig to fall on a count. I usually started with ten seconds, and worked my way up to as much as 30 seconds. This rig drops at about a half foot per second.

Then as slowly as possible, reel it in. Like turn the handle about a quarter turn for every 5 seconds kind of slow. Short 3-4 seconds pauses every full turn. All the way back to you, or until the rig is in full sunlight again.

The swivel is a tiny prey item that the worm is stalking. This can and will provoke a predatory response from bass, even when they aren't all that interested in actually eating. They just can't resist getting in on the hunt.

You can make the thing very enticing depending on how fast you reel, but it should always be pretty slow. Try casting it into the shallows and watch how the worm behaves when you reel that slow; it kind of glides, hovers, twitches into motion then glides some more. It won't take long for you to get the idea.

2nd note: This is a light line technique. Most spinning rigs aren't spooled with more than 8-lb. test anyway, but just in case, I wouldn't go higher than 10-lbs to the swivel. Off the back of the swivel I'd try to go a bit lighter. like from 8-lbs. to 6-lbs. Or 10 to 8.

That being said, obviously you aren't going to be fishing this in heavy cover, but rather along cover, maybe a foot or two off. Which is why you need to allow it to drop on semi-tight line, so you can feel any take and set the hook quickly before that fish runs back into his hole.

Anyway, I've caught some nice fish on the thing, and more importantly for this time of year, I've been able to get some action when everyone else is just straining water.

No photos up yet, but I've had an incredible time fishing here in Wyoming since Saturday. We're staying in Jackson, and I've fished the Hobak, Flat Creek, the Snake River and a couple lakes, and have had excellent success at each location.

This morning we hiked into Flat Creek on the National Elk Refuge, where I caught several nice Cutthroat on Adams flies and then this evening we dodged a rainstorm to catch some nice Bows and Cutties on the snake with larger flies (I was throwing a Chubby Chernobyl).

Tomorrow we head to West Yellowstone. Still feeling out where to walk/wade there, but have a couple spots pinpointed for starters.

Crossing this beautiful country off the bucket list has been incredible!

These things are absolutely destroying the Illinois river, among many others... guys around here stand on top of bridges and bow hunt them, pulling out fish the size of dogs

Missed the redneck fishing tourny two years in a row now, a very good time with a street carnival atmosphere year before last it was canceled because of flooding, and this year because of the rona

My state is super paranoid about invasive species in the water. No live bait is allowed in any stream, lake or ocean fishery in this state. ADF&G banned felt waders several years ago because of the potential of importing eggs from some snail with no natural enemies so now I have to walk on slippery river rocks with rubber-soled wading boots. Part of the issue is that with lakes and rivers being frozen half the year, the fish are more susceptible to fishing pressure than in places with year-round open water and year-round food supplies.

A few decades ago, some idiots transplanted pike from rivers in central Alaska to southern Alaska so they could catch them without having to drive/boat so far. When pike go into a lake or to waters, they eat the salmon out and salmon are far more profitable than pike, both to commercial and sport fisheries. Depending on the water, they also will eat the grayling, trout and char. Sometimes pike get transferred into new water by flooding or rivers/lakes changing courses and boundaries, though.

There is a plant-based toxin, rotenone, that will block fish from being able to absorb oxygen from the water. It is inert to humans so it apparently does no damage to humans but it kills every last fish. It also breaks down in fish flesh fairly quickly and is not as toxic to birds or wildlife, so there’s no bio-accumulation that would then kill birds and wildlife that eat rotenone-killed fish. Alaska F&G has used rotenone to kill pike (and any other fish) in lakes and rivers where pike have been introduced and pike have come to dominate the local food chain. Retenone settles to the bottom of the lake and, being plant-based, dissolves. After a bit of time, they re-introduce native fish. I think that they usually put the toxin down in fall and then re-introduce fish after ice out next summer but I could be wrong about that.

I don’t know if it is being used for Asian carp but given how wide-spread the carp seem to be, the quantities necessary to produce the desired results may be prohibitive for a variety of reasons. But it’s something to consider.

This may be viewed as DC because the article tries to tie this to the President. That's not my point. My point is the decision made about Bristol Bay and the world's largest freshwater salmon hatchery. This really relates to fishing, particularly in my back yard and the fishing thread is here and not in DC but if mods think otherwise, feel free to delete this post.

That aside, I am super pleased to announce that Pebble Mine's application has been denied:

https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2020...r-pebble-mine/

I lived in Bristol Bay for several years and I go back to go fishing every fall. Those are some hallowed waters: the Kvichak, Tularik, Copper, Battle Creek, Moraine, the American, the Gibraltar. I've watched the water boil from the red salmon runs. I've felt a hard bump when a 35+ lb king salmon runs into me. I've had to wait for bears to leave fishing holes. I've knocked ice out of my fly rod guides in late September. I've landed 30" wild rainbow trout. I've caught so many grayling on a dry fly that I literally cannot count them. It's a special place and I'm glad that Northern Dynasty with their horrible record and shitty proposal won't be allowed to screw it up.

Corn. Herpes. An underwater conveyor belt. The most promising weapons against one of the most invasive and destructive fish in the United States are not exactly traditional.

Over the past decade, researchers at the University of Minnesota have tested a number of strange ideas to find a method to eradicate or at least cut down the number of common carp that have taken over and changed the makeup of lakes and wetlands throughout the state.

And they're starting to see results with these offbeat methods that cater to the fish's appetite, migrating patterns and diseases that kill them. In just a few days last spring, the U was able to pull more than a thousand carp out of Rice Creek near New Brighton using an electric fence and a conveyor belt.

"That was in a relatively small area just so we could see if it works," said Przemek Bajer, one of the lead researchers with the U's Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center. "This year we'll be more than doubling the area, so we think we'll get more of the fish to aggregate."

Common carp have been so prevalent throughout Minnesota and much of the U.S. over the past century that they are often overlooked. But while newer invasive threats such as zebra mussels and the big head and silver carp working their way up the Mississippi River grab much of the attention, common carp have been steadily and quietly wreaking havoc on local ecosystems.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lists the fish as perhaps the most damaging invasive species to ever hit the state's waters, particularly in shallow lakes and wetlands.

They were purposefully released in the state as a game fish by European immigrants in the 1880s and have been multiplying almost unchecked ever since. As bottom feeders, they nose under lake beds searching for food, uprooting plants and vegetation like feral hogs. That muddies the water, killing native plants and fish. It also releases phosphorus and nitrates that had been safely sequestered at the bottom of the lake, causing algae blooms.

Those blooms can turn toxic, deplete a shallow lake's oxygen supply and leave native fish and waterfowl with little to eat. When those animals die or move on, the carp rule the muddy, nutrient-rich and predator-free waters that are ideal for their offspring.

The species does, however, have a handful of weaknesses that can be exploited if scientists can find methods that are cheap and easy enough, Bajer said.

One of those weaknesses? Carp migrate together by the tens of thousands each spring to the shallow waters and marshes where they lay their eggs.

"That does half the work for us because it gives us a nice pinch point," he said.

Bajer and his team have tested electric fences during the migration, guiding the fish into a pen. Gaps in the fence are large enough for most native fish to swim through, while the larger carp are stuck. Once they're corralled, an electric shock slightly stuns them over the conveyor belt, which scoops them up one by one; any native fish that are incidentally captured can be safely released.

The system is largely automated and can be run by just two people on and off for about a month each spring during the migration. The project received $300,000 in funding from the state's Environment and Natural Resource Trust Fund.

If an estimated 20,000 carp migrate through Rice Creek each year, and the conveyor belt can take out several thousand a year, native plants may start returning and native fish may start rebounding, Bajer said.

"It would take time, but you could fish down that carp population," he said.

Another vulnerability for carp is how much they love corn.

No native fish species eat corn, but carp will feast on it, Bajer said.

The research center has been using the crop as bait. The carp swarm it in large numbers, scaring away native fish that have no interest in fighting over a grain. Nets surrounding the corn are simply pulled up and the carp are captured with very few — less than 1 in 100 — native fish incidentally taken in the nets.

"We tried this with six nets, and we pulled up almost 7,000 carp in just two days," Bajer said.

Carp are also killed by a herpes virus that seems to only infect them and other koi fish.

While researchers with the U say they never plan to release the virus to fight carp, they are looking for ways to make the fish more vulnerable to succumbing to the disease when there are outbreaks.

They've been testing the virus — Koi Herpes Virus or KHV — on native minnows and fish in the lab to see if it could potentially harm or infect other species. Trials are showing that the virus doesn't seem to infect any fish other than koi, said Isaiah Tolo, a researcher with the U.

It's unclear exactly how long the virus has been infecting carp in Minnesota. It was first found in the early 2000s, but it's possible it has been present for as long as the carp have been here, Tolo said.

The virus has caused several large carp die-offs, including one 2018 case where about 10,000 died at once in a western Minnesota lake — about a third of the lake's total carp population.

The denser the population, when more carp are crowded together, the more vulnerable they are to the virus, Tolo said. Researchers don't know yet if the fish can be manipulated in ways that will help the virus kill them off.

"Right now we're really trying to learn everything we can about the virus, and really make sure it's safe," he said.

Yeeeah buddy, this warm weather has the fishing bug hitting hard, and my crew are going to be working roughly half this spring and summer on jobs at Lake of The Ozarks... I'm about to experience the best fishing of my life

I'm gonna have to get back into fishing. I just hope a few bad years have scared all the facebook morons away from spots.

Here's one for all of you guys west of me in trout country, just a freaking monster new record... honestly didn't know they got quite this big

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fi...?ocid=msedgdhp

Got out this past monday on a beautiful 70 degree day at the local lake and nabbed 3 hand sized white bass that were likely added last spring... not lunkers by any means but it was proof that spring is sprunging (sp?) PDQ

Not bad for my first early spring outing, just 3 weeks ago this lake was a 375 acre ice cube

Gonna fish my butt off this year and I've sworn to keep more legal ones to eat than usual, been too lazy too often in the recent past not wanting to come home and hassle with it... thats changing, I want a freezer full of everything

Need to be getting more out of all the time and money I spend

Sofa King 03-10-2021 06:48 PM

Hammered a limit of walleyes last night in the nice weather. Today, 6 inches of goddamn slushy snow. Caught a bunch of keeper walleyes I had to throw back.

Man those are tasty fish. Good going.

It's getting warm enough around here that I'm getting antsy in my pantsy.

Great your getting out. I got my license but haven’t had time to stomp around Iowa trout country.

Man that Brown is beyond huge. I wonder what it’s length is? He looked as long as the angler!

I think we need to hear about Sofa's best walleye recipe, wouldn't you agree?

Getting out is imperative this year, boredom/midlife crisis issues are starting to set in on many facets of my life and adventure is called for

My first big adventure is going to be a camping and fishing trip deep in the woods outside of Louisiana, Mo, along the river about an hour or so from here... the fishing could be spectacular, and a Momo sighting would be even better

I am going to be on the Wind River in early July. What flies, leader size should I be looking at? Not much experience western fishing

Sofa King 03-10-2021 09:43 PM

If it ever gets to the point where we can do another CP bash, I’d gladly bring as much as I can illegally transport. I’m at the point in my life that I’d be very happy to meet everyone and can afford to make the trip, time wise and financially. I’ve only met one person ever from CP.

I’m a shitty cook so I just do very basic stuff. I hate cooking.

Nice! That had to be a pretty old fish to grow to that size that far north. Montana has been killin it this year.

Flying me and my pop up to Missoula to fly fish the Skwala hatch in early April on the Bitterroot + Clark rivers.

Anyone have experience up there? How was the trip?

Goddammit I'm ready to go fishing but finally going Tuesday to the lake. This is the longest I've ever gone without going fishing and it bumbs me out.

ghak99 05-16-2021 09:53 PM

I set the circle into a rich lawyer last week.

He's taking me into deep water, but he doesn't know I already have his home and work address. I'm letting the line run to buy some time until he plays out and slips up by letting me know he's away from home. It won't be long and I'll be setting the drag with some live snapper action and ripping his ass back to the surface during the fishing trip he told me about. My boys are on the net and have the gaff in hand. It's just a matter of time before we land this whale.

Enjoy it

Soon it will be hot as shit and you won't want to be out sweating your ass off and you'll be relegated to fishing dawn, dusk, and night.

I haven't even wet a line yet this year. Too much work and home stuff going on.

However, I do have a fair amount of crappie filets in my freezer and I am cooking a fwe up for dinner tonight.

Sounds great, DG... can we get some dinner pics?

It's rained too damn much around here. Been almost impossible to find the time to go on a day when it's not raining. Even if I could, my favorite rivers and creeks are too damn high. AAAaaauuuurrrrgggghhhh!:cuss:

Spring has been a joke for over a decade now, there is no spring anymore...

We lurch from pure winter into a cold and rainy late winter that is supposed to be spring that drags on and on, then finally snaps directly into sweltering 90+ degree summer days sometime in June

Yup, last few years it's been harder and harder to string together good fishing days.

Easy 6 05-31-2021 03:32 PM

Got bored and went and did it today, picked up something I've had my eye on for a month or so now... Zebco's first $100 reel, the Bullet

Its a sweet lil machine with 9 ball bearings that in many ways equals much pricier open face and baitcasting reels

Very fast, and also casts for distance like a wet dream... she puuurty

Paired it with Abu Garcia Vengeance medium/heavy graphite rod, and it all works together beautifully... perfectly balanced

Rare golden large mouth bass

Since I'm a newbie won't let me post link directly.

The Fishing Thread

Took my family out for some bobber and worm fishing at a local conservation place yesterday. He's been out with me two other times and he hasn't caught anything, but he finally landed the big one!! Little bluegill that completely swallowed the hook, but he was super proud to catch one on his paw patrol getup!

The wife caught about six on the same setup, bluegill and one decent little bass. I walked down and threw a couple different lures and caught a baby bass and nothing else, but we all had fun.

Haven't seen you in forever, Megatron... we feared your plane broke apart in mid-air lol, nice fish in a very urban environment

Literally just finished watching this dude here, loves me some RGTFM... he's a fishing savant, he long ago forgot more than I'll ever know about it

Pablo - been on probably 100 fishing trips over my lifetime and the one I am most fond of is with my bil catching a mess of bluegills when I was about 8. Good stuff man. :thumb:

Why Not? 06-03-2021 09:15 PM

Just booked an overnight trip out of San Diego for late June going for Tuna, Amberjack, and Mahi. Can’t wait. The boys (9 and 12) are ready for an overnight/all next day run. Gonna be awesome!

Strongside 06-03-2021 09:29 PM

Been posting on this board for damn near a decade and somehow have never seen the fishing thread.

I've been pretty ate up with the fishing bug since I could walk, so I'll be visiting frequently.

Have had a great Spring so far this year. Got a bit of a late start while the boat was in for late service, but several great days pulling Crappie and LMB in the past 3 weeks locally – and just got back from Bozeman about a month ago after a weeklong trip swinging Browns and Cutthroat.

Several trips lined up the remainder of the year including Bonefish in Aruba and a long weekend on the Okeechobee.

Glad I found this one!

Nah. Thanks for the cheery thoughts though.:p

Right after the SB, I decided to take a break from all things interwebs. Then 2 months later, I ended up taking over the management of a business I invested in, and instantly I was too busy to spend any significant time here.

That bass basically represents just the 3rd time I've had a chance to go fishing this year (normally I'd have already spent 20-25 days on the water by now).

Also been trying to learn to fly fish for carp this summer. Interesting challenge. Took a couple days to just get one to took at my fly.

MDC recently released a massive amount of Walleye into waters all over the state. Large numbers of them even went into lakes that they were not previously in but already possessed very good habitat for them.

I'm really looking forward to enjoying that in a few years, but am a little worried about what it might do to one traditionally very good crappie hole.

I fish Lake Meredith in the Texas panhandle and they restocked the Walleye a few years back. People are catching plenty of Crappie out of there. Wednesday I caught about 30 Walleye but they were all small. About 14 inches. State regulations allow you to keep 2 under 16 inches, also caught 3 huge crappie and a nice sandbass.

In case you don't know ,when fishing for Walleye they'll be on the bottom. The go to lure is a fluke with 1/4 ounce jighead here. Just let it hit bottom and slowly bounce it back, several times I'd set my rod down after casting out to pick up another rod with live bait to check it and when I'd pick it back up there'd be a fish on, Was catching them in 20-30 feet water.

BTW, Walleye has gotta be some of the best tasting fish there is.

MDC put them in some shallow mud holes up here probably 20 years ago. They can still be caught occasionally, and they might be Walleye, but they're not Walleye. You even have to use a bit of non traditional methods to catch them there.

The best fish I've ever had was fresh Walleye as shore lunch on a rock island in a Native controlled/protected Lake well north of the border. Damn that fish was good and they wouldn't let you cross the border with near enough! I think you could eat your limit under 16" every day if you wanted to and then bring home one fish over 22" as a trophy and a few under 16". I can't remember what they had for Pike and Musky limits at the time but it was a similar breeder/trophy protection system.

It has been way too long since I've unloaded gear and watched a float plane leave.
