Oh I agree, like I said I feel this move was made for next year and beyond, but I can't see Hardman being too happy if you start giving his snaps away to a newcomer in his contract year. Mecole strikes me as the type who wouldn't just take that sitting down.

There's a legit chance we could lose both JuJu and Hardman next year. I can't see the Chiefs overpaying for either with the way the market has been. If JuJu puts up 1,200+ yards and Mecole keeps making the flashy plays he has been, they are both getting huge deals. That's why Veach and Andy did this. You might look at Toney, MVS and Skyy Moore as your top 3 next year. Will be very interesting to see what happens.

Guess that was our big splash move for receiver. Yay

They're not done I bet. Maybe at WR but there's some defensive help still to be had.

from NJ advance media,” In college, Toney averaged 12.6 yards on 11 punt returns in 2020, also scoring on a 50-yard return against Kentucky. ”. At least he’s had more experience than Sky with returning punts in college.

Imagine:

Beckham (healthy)
JJSS
MVS
Toney
Hardman
Moore

Then add Ross to the mix next year...

Man I loved the idea of the Chiefs getting Toney during that draft but always knew it was a pipe dream.

There’s also the kid with the broken foot and neck!

Best-case scenario, IMO, is Smith-Schuster decides he likes it in KC and prioritizes that over maximizing every dollar he can. He stays for the pay raise and commitment he has earned (something that falls in the $15-18M range). Meanwhile, Hardman signs a deal big enough to net a compensatory 3rd rounder (which would be a huge deal).

High ceiling low cost trade. The biggest downside is if other guys get mad he's taking away touches and if he continues not to study and causes a pick or two.

Still need to protect Mahomes. Doesn't matter who they line up if the line isn't playing well.

Part of protecting Mahomes and helping the line is getting the ball out quickly. Short passes with a lot of YAC potential, which of course is an area where Toney excels.

Though if his route running is truly questionable, then that becomes a recipe for disaster. Very interested to see what the kid looks like.

seems weird to me to give up a 3rd. We seem pretty full at WR tbh, but we can trust Veach enough at this point

It wasn't "our" 3rd though, it was a compensatory pick we got when Poles went to Chicago. It's essentially a 4th rounder.
