I’d probably take the damn picks. That’s a TON to give to a 30+ yr old WR. But man if he ages like Steve Smith I’d never forgive myself for it. I want three to spend their careers together and go to the HoF as Chiefs with no exceptions. It would sting. A bunch. But it might just end up necessary. |

I could see $24-25 million a season though. |

You have to weigh the opportunity cost. If you extend Hill, you’re giving up the picks that you could’ve had AND the cap space. If you trade, you get the picks AND the cap space. It would hurt, but I would do it too. |

Appearing on NFL Network, cornerback Patrick Peterson — formerly of the Minnesota Vikings and now a free agent — spoke about what he’s looking for in his next team as he tests out free agency at age 31.
“I know that I am older, and in this game a lot of GMs want younger guys,” Peterson said. “But I can still play at a high level. So at the end of the day, I just don’t want to be disrespected. Just give me “something” that’s respectable, I can go out there and play at a high level and give it my all to wherever team I land on to try and win a championship.” The “something” Peterson, an eight-time Pro Bowler, was referring to is money. The three-time All-Pro cornerback expressed his desire to re-join the Vikings, whom he signed a one-year deal with last offseason. However, Peterson also said he’d like to play for the Chiefs. “Kansas City I don’t think would be a bad spot,” he said. Peterson also mentioned the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles as other teams he would like to join as well. Heading into free agency, the Chiefs were roughly $10.6 million over the cap, according to Over The Cap. However, the front office restructured defensive end Frank Clark’s contract, which lowered his cap number from $23.2 million to $13.7 million, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. That in turn free up $12.6 million in cap room for Kansas City, per Yates. Simple math shows that the Chiefs don’t have very much spending money. However, giving wide receiver Tyreek Hill a contract extension, which the team is “deep in talks” about, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, would free up more money, among other potential cap maneuvers. Given his age and decline in ability, the Chiefs could offer Peterson no more than a one-year, prove-it deal, much like the Vikings did in 2021. Minnesota gave Peterson $10 million in that deal. A year later and after recording just a 63.0 overall grade from PFF for the 2021 season, Kansas City’s best offer to Peterson — if they were at all interested in him — shouldn’t be more than $5-7 million. From that point, the Chiefs would have to hope that Peterson would bring a higher level of play than we’ve seen the last couple of years from him, which would make his contract worthwhile as Kansas City attempts to contend for another championship. Unfortunately, that type of money likely wouldn’t be enough to get Peterson to sign with the Chiefs. Later in his interview on NFL Network, after he discussed his preferred destinations, Peterson had two words to describe what will ultimately coax him to sign with any team this offseason. “Money talks.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I ain’t reading that many words dedicated to a rapidly declining corner.
Too old, don’t want. Moving on. |

Possible Tyreek extension tomorrow on the last day they can restructure Mahomes?
Is another move coming? |
Maybe this is pressing for something big to happen… but Veach not participating in Justin Reid’s press conference today was weird, yes?
There was only a prepared statement released on his behalf by the Chiefs media relations staff. Maybe that means he’s working on something bigger before doing a live press conference? |

At this point who the **** knows what Veach has planned. He could do all the restructures and extensions….and then sign 9-10 guys in FA to minimal deals to fill out the roster. |

Man, we have a lot of spots to fill yet. Our DL is quietly in shambles with only Jones and Clark as notable names. Still need a couple more quality EDGE rushers, WR2, another starting LB for the base package, LB depth, another starting CB to replace Ward (Huges probably won't be back), and an upgrade at RT would be fantastic.
With that said, I have full confidence in Brett Veach. We got this. Glad Tyreek will soon get is well deserved big contract. Dude will be in Canton one day. |

Just had a thought.
Last years FA was frustrating because we kept missing out on guys we were interested in and it seemed like we weren’t able to deliver on our plan of attack. This year, Veach directly stated that he wouldn’t be involved in the early part of FA, but would probably be active in the second wave. He also said he would be aggressive with the DL position and then referenced how this was a good draft for that. None of the big names that have signed were directly tied to us as being interested in, just guys that people thought would fit well here. I say all that to say - it seems like we are still operating within Veach’s plan. We haven’t whiffed on anyone yet that we know of. When thinking of guys we are tied to, JuJu is the only one I can think of, and he hasn’t signed anywhere yet. |
The Steelers are re-signing cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a two-year, $8 million deal, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.

Sure but Ward matches up to him better and they used him to cover Adams in both of their matchups. |

Big, physical, athletic, young and cheap. And he has, at times, been EXTREMELY good. I'm not sure you can count on a great deal of consistency from him, but he was outstanding for SF a couple years ago, fell out of favor, got traded and then was good in Pitt when they brought him in. I mean man - he's not a Ward replacement but at this point nobody is. At that price he's just quality depth. Shit man, exactly what are we doing? Again, I ain't mad that we're not swimming with the sharks here. But I'm starting to get really damn confused about the fact that we're not doing those things that are savvy alternatives. At a point you have to actually get some ****ing dudes on this roster, Brett. And at $4 million/yr, how cheap do you really need them to be? |
Quote:
|
I don’t understand why we aren’t spending huge money on defensive free agents so we can just bitch about all of the defensive players we have spent huge money on like Justin Houston, Frank Clark, Eric Berry, Tyrann Matheiu and Chris Jones.
I just don’t get it guys. We need to continue the cycle guys or I will seriously be depressed. Goddamn you Burt. Goddamn you! |
Maybe Malik Herring will turn into something this year for us
|
If Hill gets the large contract he’s expected to get….then I think it’s almost a given that Chris Jones is gone next year. You can’t have a top 3 contract for every damn position. And we’re about to have QB, WR, OT, OG, DT and DE. Clark and Jones will be off the books next offseason.

So Thuney's 2023 salary guarantees tomorrow (2022) His 2022 salary triggered on the first day of the 2021 league year. But his 2024 salary doesn't guarantee until the first day of the 2024 league year. So Thuney's deal has an escape hatch after next season and I'd imagine Smith's emergence means we'll be taking it. But hell man, Kelce's gonna have a $16.4 million cap hit then and he'll be 35. A LOT is going to change over the next 2 seasons. I think it's a reality we should probably begin preparing for now. |
Quote:

Packers gonna sign JuJu now. Just watch
|
Quote:
And I don't actually think they move on from Kelce by then if he still wants to play. They'll do the restructure thing. But by 2024 you may be looking at the swan songs of Hill and Kelce, Mahomes, Butker, Gay, Bolton, Humphrey, Sneed and Smith as the only guys from this roster still on the squad. Reid will have a $14 million+ cap hit w/ $3 million in dead money so he'll get restructured or gone. The organization still doesn't seem sold on Thornhill long term. I guess Gray will probably still around - he's cheap. You'd like to think they'll have upgraded on Danna and I don't imagine Kaindoh sticks. Niang - lord, your guess is as good as mine. That's 2 seasons of football away. I mean that's ****ing jarring. But honestly I just don't have a problem with it. I've said it before, Mahomes will have 3-4 different 'teams' around him over his time here and this core he's had since he got here is nearing its end. The worst thing the franchise could do is what they did with Lenny and the early 70s Chiefs where they just held on too long and let that team fall apart. It set them up for a rough decade. Now things are a bit easier now with the cap jetissoning talent every year, but it's still a hell of a lot easier to STAY out of that kind of morass than it is to dig out of it. |
Quote:
But then again he went back to Pittsburgh last year so maybe he isn't all the way there.... |
Quote:
If you can't find a 6'1'', 210 lb WR who runs a 4.6 and has decent hands, you ****ing suck at finding players. There's a reason the market keeps falling apart for this guy. His skill set just isn't difficult to find. If he's cheap - hurray. He can play X here and be adequate. That's easier than using a draft pick to develop one and no more expensive than retaining Pringle would've been. If the Packers want to drive his market up, fine - have fun with that effete prick throwing you footballs, John. Seriously guys, if the dude just kept the name he had coming out of high school, we'd have forgotten about him by now. Who would've given a damn about signing a dude named John Smith with his tools? Hell, he'd have probably gone undrafted and vanished from the landscape altogether. |
I may have missed a signing, but I think these guys are all still free agents -

He also had over 600 yards of rushing. Without Byron Pringle we could use a kickoff returner. |
Patterson has been an ass WR his entire career. The only thing that kept him in the league were his STs skills and that time he spent as a RB with the Patriots.
That is just a massive pile of 'meh'. MVS is the only person I find remotely intriguing in that bunch. But he's been a cocktease his whole career and I'd be surprised if he doesn't do the same thing here. |
Trade for Shenault or just spend draft capital.
|
I think some of ya'll are just looking for answers that aren't there. The talent gap has closed it sucks but what did you expect? Congrats to the Chargers & Raiders you haven't been this close to winning the division since what? 2010? Reid and the staff is going to have to do something they haven't had to do since when? 2016 most likely 2014 and that's coach up lesser talent (won 12 games in 16' and was a **** hair away in 14' from the playoffs both with Alex Smith) Embrace the process and in a year or 2 we will be able to pay some of these guys in the open market. The worst thing we can do right now is give up valuable capital for guys who have very little value moving forward.
|
I'm hoping for Julio or obj. The pressure would be off them because of Tyreek and Kelce. That's what they need at this stage in their career.
We also need to grab a WR in the top 100. |

Almost exclusively a slot receiver for the vast majority of his career and if he's lost a step (a distinct possibility) he can't really do that terribly well anymore either. Shame he wasted his career on a bad team - but I don't see much value to be added from him. |
When’s the last time the Chiefs had a prototypical slot only guy?
I just don’t think they value those guys. That’s why I don’t think they’d sign Landry either. |

He’s also an electric kick/punt returner and Pringle just signed in Chicago. We don’t have much to spend and he can provide some bang for limited buck. 618 rushing and 6tds 548 receiving and 5tds. And he got those yards doing the things we ask our offense guys to do. |

I see no indication that Crowder can. MVS or Crowder at the same cost, I'm taking MVS. I just can't get past what we saw from Hardman when we started using him correctly. Man he was a weapon. But 'correctly' meant not as an X. So if you bring in Crowder, you're really layering Hardman. And in so doing, you're bringing in a less dynamic threat than Hardman and someone that would do less to undermine a Cover 2 (because Hardman on those drags is absolute murder on those). Hardman is on the roster in pen as my Y receiver. So that just doesn't leave much room for Crowder. |

Quote:
It lets you challenge everywhere on the field. ESPECIALLY when you have a QB with Pats arm talent. And most assuredly when you're running a WCO offense that thrives on using as much of the field as possible. Think of a base Cover 2 - now tell me what the hell that coverage is supposed to do against a deep out? Not a lot of teams can use that deep out route because few quarterbacks have the arm strength to challenge the far sideline from the near hash. And if they do have a QB that can do that, few teams have a guy like Hill that will force teams into that shell or a guy like Kelce that can keep them in the middle of the field. Well the Chiefs have all that. So tell me how a 2-deep shell deals with that guy? Or a good post-corner route? Or as many would recognize it - WASP. You don't run it that deep, but you can take a 10 yard post and cut it out at 15 yards and catch that post-corner about 22 yards downfield. When that safety is starting 18 yards back and hitting his heels as soon as you snap the ball, he's ****ed. Lord, even a 14 yard dig route - you'll split the safeties if you can make a speed cut and a fast receiver like MVS can. Speed isn't just about verts. It's why I just don't give one single shit about a guy like Landry and really don't care much about JuJu. If you want to beat the cover 2, the answer is more speed to challenge more of the field. That 1/2 second you gain on the route by having someone who runs 2 strides quicker makes all the difference in the world. Hardman can't make a speed cut, so he can't run those routes worth a damn. Pringle was demonstrating that he could, that's why he was getting those routes and why the Bears just gave him $6 million. What we need is a guy that can. THAT'S how you beat the Cover 2. And a RB with the speed to challenge the corners or put the safeties in an impossible situation on a simple arrow route. Moreover, that's how you keep teams out of those Cover 3 looks that can create some headaches for those routes I discussed above (and Hardman on the drags and quick screens will do the same). The answer isn't possession WRs. It's what we have, but more of it. |
