I love Rome. So many great actor & performances. I thought Marc Antony and Atia (?) were great.

I was searching for a gif and just found out Ray Stevenson passed away. I guess I missed that or had forgot.

Yeah - died after filming the first season of Ashoka. Man was he incredible in that show.

The gravitas he brought to every scene he was in was pretty unique; something that I figure it takes that 'classically trained, big A Actor' shit to pull off.

A truly legendary episode. One of the best in television history.

And the best scene isn't even the moment in the Church, though that seems to be most people's favorites. "Have I displeased you, you feckless thug?" may behis best line, but that ending and the way the actors emote so much with little more than expressions is spectacular.

"Watch this..." was a genuine chill moment for me. And just a masterful use of the soundtrack. Wish I could find a better recording of that last 5 minutes but it is beat for beat dead solid perfect.

I wanna be Leo when I grow up.

DJ's left nut 08-15-2024 10:52 AM

A warning to you, though - everything is downhill from here.

Season 2 is one of the best seasons of television ever. I'd listen to argument that it's THE best. Season 3 is pretty decent and 4 is solid on inertia but the cracks are getting bigger and the ships taking on a lot of water.

By season 5 it's effectively over. There are some interesting characters that pop up here and there, but the storytelling fell to shit and it gets REALLY far up its own ass.

Yeah that was great. That was like one of us watching Patrick Mahomes.

I REALLY enjoyed the Landingham ghost lecture and the door blowing open scene. That was phenomenal. And then he just walks out into the rain? OOMPH.

Also the church scene suffered with no subtitles, you can go read the latin subtitles on youtube. I was reading the comments and you can read that scene as either him bitching at god, or his father. I think it's even better if you read it as his father, and makes way more sense, what with the cigarette butt and all.

I'm glad I watched this as an adult because kid Clay wouldn't understand half of it.

DJ's left nut 08-15-2024 02:30 PM

I've watched it with the sub-titles before but honestly don't think it needs it.

What he's saying doesn't really matter - you know what it is. Especially when you know how active Sorkin was in the writing room at the time.

It's a devout Catholic being angry at God; a crisis of faith. An argument with his 'Big F' Father. Giving any sort of translation would've only served as a distraction - the emotion was the takeaway, not the words. That's what the cigarette was intended to hammer home.

I remember starting a bit at "That was my son..." because it was a level of closeness with Josh that you never actually saw. Oh sure, Josh and Leo - but not Bartlett. I can't decide if that line was really good or just completely out of place.

But that's a fairly minor quibble.

DJ's left nut 08-15-2024 09:01 PM

Dammit, Clay - you made me watch it again.

It's just so good. And it's funny to listen to Sam knowing what we know about Rob Lowe and how he felt about how the character was treated.

"I wanna bring it up again"
"Why?"
"Because I got shouted down the first three times and I work here just like you do. Can I help you?"

That's Rob Lowe bitching about his character largely being an afterthought THROUGH his character. You think he struggled at all with that line reading? I do not.

Another thing I find fascinating about the show is how well they manage to kinda segment the main characters. For instance, in that clip above, we don't have the 'heroes' all standing together as you would in a less artfully done show. You have Toby and Leo by one set of monitors. You have Donna and Margaret in the gallery. You have CJ, Sam and Josh in their own corner. You have Charlie being the body man.

And you have a director willing to do that and actually get those individual shots instead of do it the lazy way. And why would he do that? Because it's infinitely more 'human'. That's how workplaces work. And too many hackney dramas just don't do it like that.

Hammock Parties 08-15-2024 09:51 PM

The other thing I picked up on rewatching it, is him putting his hands in his pockets at the podium....just like he did when young Mrs. Landingham challenged him in his youth.

The younger versions of those characters were cast incredibly well given their short screen time.

And yes, would...

Watched Kaos with Jeff Goldblum as Zeus... I liked it. I think Jeff Goldblum and his quirky way of acting just fits that role perfect.

It's probably been mentioned here, but I will add that Slow Horses on Apple+ with Gary Oldman is really good. The 4th season is airing now.

Also, Bad Monkey, also on Apple+, with Vince Vaughn doing his glib talking, is pretty entertaining.

KCUnited 09-12-2024 03:25 PM

Anyone watching Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist?

Admittedly its a lot of Kevin Hart. Like Kevin Hart making his cocked-head-look in every other scene a lot, but Samuel L Jackson is delivering and Don Cheadle is killing his role

I'm like 4 or 5 episodes in and its enjoyable

I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of Bad Monkey. Ran out of new episodes and decided to wait a few weeks until it's done. I liked it. Vince Vaughns schtick still works. The settings are fun. A bit of mystery to it. The coroner lady is hot

Agreed. It’s worth watching it for this version of Vince Vaughn alone. He was deeply missed.

I'm sure it's been discussed in here plenty but I don't remember ever seeing it when I do check this thread. I finally just got around to watching The Last Kingdom and thought it was flat out amazing. For most it's probably not quite Game of Thrones level and certainly wasn't in popularity, but I put it up there. I actually prefer the loosely accurate historical parts of the show and the lack of the magic/dragons of TLK more than GOT. And Uhtred was just an awesome character. Really bummed I've finished it but will definitely watch again.

Actually just watched it tonight! Not as good as a whole season and felt rushed and kinda lacked the normal depth of the story, but good nonetheless and a nice cap to the whole series. Might check out Vikings now and stay in that same genre but TLK will be tough to beat.

The cast alone is incredible. Saw the trailer for it earlier today and the reviews were so middling that I’m not sure I can get there, but I’m curious where you shake out.

Seasons 2 of Panchinko and Old Man are in progress and that’s a tough group to top during football season.

Are you actually watching it or just looking at some trailers? I started rewatching it recently and thought it has held up fairly well. The only thing I noticed is they would use a small amount of people to try and make it look like they had an army or a large crowd. Just something that stuck out the last time I watched it.

I'm watching the show. It's supposed to be a really high budget TV show, but it just looks like something filmed in the 80s or maybe even earlier. I'm not doing a very good job of describing what I mean.

The Crown

The Netflix series "the Crown" has me totally enjoying it.

I did a search and it didn't come up much to my surprise.

At first the series seemed kind of boring and slow, like a lot of good series. But it starts really coming together and gets very interesting.

I must admit, a lot of this stuff happening in this series was in the news most of my life and my attitude was always "who gives a shit?"

But now, it is connecting a lot of dots and is a fun and very interesting watch.

I'll do the favor that someone did for me by suggesting Banshee. It's on Max and lasted 4 seasons from 2013-2016. It has a fair amount of violence, sex, and nudity so not for children.

So you get what I'm saying, right? Also I pushed through it and I'm glad I did. The show is pretty good, however it's not as good as I've seen it hyped up to be. I've seen people say it's one of the best shows ever and that's just absurd. Good show though.

My kid loved japanese godzilla movies from the 60's. Had seen nothing but CGI but when he watched a movie with a dude in a rubber suit he thought it was real. Dubbing was so bad in those movies that he actually preferred the japanese versions where everybody's screaming at each other (Sua Sau mofu mofu wan wan!!! ). In one of the dubs the monster has a barney purple dinosaur voice (Monsters Attack)...Japanese studious will troll the audiences with bad dub's.

Since I got Sling TV for the MNF Chiefs game and the Royals playoffs, I watch this series during the long commercial breaks.

Laptop sitting up by TV with game on and when commercials are over switch back to the games. :D Remote in each hand.

The Aaron Hernandez story on FX has been pretty damn good

Started watching at episode 4 a couple weeks ago, watching #5 on demand right now... a very interesting tale of a very complicated guy, and the guy who plays Belichick is SPOT ON

I've just started watching Lost again for the first time since it first aired (about 20 years ago). Back then, it was must-watch tv for me and a lot of other folks. I'm really enjoying watching it for the second time as well. It's a well-done series with interesting characters and plenty of plot twists. Enjoy!

Just finished my first rewatch of lost. I remember being in high school and watching it with my mom. It's nuts that I remembered a ton of what happened.

I'm having the opposite remembering experience...i.e. not remembering as much as I thought I would. Of course, I'm old, so I'll use that as my excuse...heh. I'm really enjoying the re-watch.

It's crazy how much I remember, because I can't remember a ton of shoes and have to watch previous seasons before I watch new ones. Did that with the last season of The Witcher, H.O.T.D, R.O.P.

I remember hearing about it as the Mrs. said she watched it back then. About the only thing on TV I watched back then was sports but it sure is an interesting series as you said. :thumb:

Am I the only one thinking the NFL and Network TV in general has gone crazy with commercials?
Even the Royals game had really long commercial breaks between innings.

Seemed like someone on here recommended perfect couple with Liev Schriber and Nicole Kidman.

Listen, this should suck. But I like it. It might suck, but I'm in.

I enjoyed this. It isn't lifechanging art, but it is a Knives out -esque who dun it. Some really good performances if not over the top, but I'd recommend. Honestly didn't know how it'd turn out, but enjoyed the ride.

I’m about 4 episodes in after seeing your post, enjoying it so far, almost has a feeling of Justified so far which was a great series. But also has plenty of tits which is a nice bonus too lol

Started watching "The Nazis, Evil on Trial" on Netflix (2024 6 episode documentary series) it's really great. Centers on the Nuremberg trial but goes back to Hitler's early years and details how the nazi party came to power. Great History piece with historical film and audio, personal accounts and interviews and recreations.

100%

Gotta kinda fight through the first couple of episodes, but after that I was absolutely hooked. Very cool and interesting concept, too. Give it a shot.

If you liked wrestling at all growing up, Mr. McMahon on Netflix is a real treat. Six-part docuseries and very well done by the guy who did Tiger King.

Holy shit, just finished Band of Brothers from HBO. Episode 9 is the most moving and sad things I've ever watched in my life. Literally cried my eyes out. I can't believe how well done that whole thing is and the scene from episode 9 probably looks almost exactly like it would have in real life.
