Ripley is the best Netflix series since Queen's Gambit.

I don't know that I'm someone who has ever focused on cinematography, but this is absolutely brilliant and beautiful with some great acting. Exceptional.

So I feel like a lot of people were really disappointed by Monarch and I just have to ask why?

I get the pacing complaint in the first episode and then there was one in the middle that was god-awful (4 or 5) but on balance I thought it was really good. Told an interesting story and navigated the time jumps very nicely.

I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, I binged that one a couple weeks ago. It was a captivating series.

Resident Alien is pretty damn funny. Really dry.

Alan Tudyk is just a funny dude.

I didn't expect to like it as much as I have.

Ultimately I think it's pretty simple - if you like Tudyk, you're gonna like this show. If you don't, you won't. Because it pretty much is just 40 minutes of him being Alan Tudyk.

If he's not your thing, probably no reason to circle back. But if you generally find him funny then you'll probably like the show.

Did a search and nothing came up for the series I have been riveted to lately. American Rust on Prime has it all, truly enjoyable show.

I watched that a few years ago when it was first on Showtime. Really enjoyed it. I like anything with Jeff Daniels and think Maura Tierney is pretty great too.

Yeah, I agree on both of them.

Just started season 2 and there is some serious gear shifting required, but still a very enjoyable watch.

Holy shit, I was hooked pretty quick, but I did not expect the second season to turn out as good as it did. It was a great way to end the show if that's the direction it takes, but I've read that the show runner has the 3rd season mapped out. He's just waiting for Max (those cock suckers are so shitty they'll cancel anything) to renew for season 3.

Like Halo the game? Cuz I haven't seen anything but that it's bad. Could be just from the Halo fan boys though. It seems to have good reviews now that I look at it.

Zebedee DuBois 04-19-2024 01:32 PM

Sugar on AppleTV+

Colin Farrel plays a "detective type" role, searching for the grand daughter of a LA Film producer. It has that LA detective noir feel that runs through Spade/Marlow/Bosch.

I've been enjoying it.

There is a thread on it halfway down the Media Center. I'm a bit behind so I've stayed out of it, but I can't wait to read the thoughts on it.

I think Sugar is very well crafted. It has that melancholy LA Detective noir down to a tee. It is a pleasure to watch something that is so well done. The curve ball in the last scene of the finale was quite the surprise, though.

I’m a fan. I’ve watched it though probably 5 or 6 times. It used to be whenever stars would have something worth watching I’d throw it on while I had it.

It’s not flawless but there are some goddamned compelling moments in there.

Thing that gets me is Michael Bay is an EP on it and there isn’t a ton of transformers over the top shit in there.

It’s damn impressive.

It's a unique show. Gets a little bit repetitive but I definitely enjoyed it. Some episodes better than others but the premise is fun and writing is good.

I've been watching mostly as a concession for all the NBA playoffs my wife is sitting through and its not bad. Its time pieced perfectly with wardrobe and set. Like really well done

Some of the sayings are too modern for that time but its definitely not the worst thing I've watched in the name of happy life

Glad you like it! One of my favorite aspects is that lots of things happen and situations change, but it always makes sense in the context of the show and characters. I can’t think of anything so far (almost done with season 3) where I thought to myself something like “well that was too convenient or made no sense and took me out of it.”

Coming back to this because I watched the 3rd (I think it was 3rd?) episode the other day and man, they just couldn't stay away from their...uhhhh...I want to call it woke but I'm not sure that's the correct description. Basically, you could very much tell the writers politics/cultural leanings with the way they presented their idea of lower class or country folks.

I am so tired of this kind of nonsense. I was ready to just stop watching right there. That kind of thing just turns me off. I may give it another go at some point but, if they start that crap again, I'm done.

Sugar on Apple TV+ took a weird unsatisfying turn to wind up the series. It had an interesting vibe going until they went in another direction. They left room for additional seasons, but I'm not sure they can restore the mood.

BigBeauford 05-31-2024 10:10 AM

Scavengers Reign just dropped on Netflix. Max canceled it after season 1, but for those who enjoyed animated shows in vein of "Invincible", this is a can't miss show. If you are a big fan of Sci-Fi, this show is basically a wet dream. If enough people watch it, I gotta assume Netflix will renew it.

Feel there’s multiple acting awards deserved here

They make clear the undertones which become overtones but still done well

I’d place it in the True Detective season 1.75 territory

Presumed Innocent on Apple TV. First couple episodes are out and it's off to a great start. Getting a lot of love as well on a couple podcasts I listen to.

DJ's left nut 06-20-2024 09:51 AM

Not a series, but I enjoyed the Gene Wilder documentary just release on Netflix.

He was just such a talented and funny guy. He made some odd career choices for, like, 20 years. But he also didn't seem to mind. He wanted to do his own thing. Hard to find anyone with a better 3-role resume than Willy Wonka, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

Definitely an all-time great. I'm honestly not a huge Mel Brooks fan EXCEPT for when Gene Wilder is involved. I think Mel needed Wilder more than Wilder needed Mel Brooks.

Anyone watched Warrior on Netflix? I think it came over as an original series from Max and has 3 seasons. I just started watching it to kill some time but it is pretty damn good. Good story line, great sex scenes, and the fighting is pretty top notch. It revolves around this guy fresh off the ship from China called Ah Sahm. Turns out he is a bad ass fighter and so one of the local gangs pulls him in to their clan. I think I finished the 4th episode from season 1 and I will definitely be watching some more.

Edit: I forgot to mention it is supposed to be taking place in the 19th century shortly after the Civil War was over.

Yeah. I have some posts on here about it. I enjoy it quite a bit. There are a couple storylines that are laborsome after some time but it’s definitely worth a watch.

Young Jun being a smart ass the whole time is probably the best part. That goes away in season 3 out of necessity, but it’s ****ing hilarious all the rest of the time.

Just got done watching the first season of The Gentleman on Netflix. That show was great. I thought the ending was slightly predictable though. There wasn't anything about all the pieces coming together that I went... nope... I did not see that one coming. But the acting was top notch and the rest of the story was just fantastic. There were so many scenes I really loved or was laughing my ass off about. Typical Guy Ritchie with the bouncing around a lot though but nothing that isn't hard to follow.

So what did we think of the Bear S3? I listened to a podcast that brought it up and the impression that I got was there was some in the media that thought it got caught up smelling it's own farts a little too much (not my words).

This damn thing has it's hooks in me. I tried not to binge it, but I did like the last 4 episodes because WTF ever, it's got me. I thought it was some really powerful filmmaking. Perhaps moreso than in prior seasons that leaned on dialogue. I thought it leaned into the Forks/Christmas Dinner episode a lot which is good...for me anyway. I'm not getting that level of filmmaking anywhere else in my life.

And the shit is powerful. It affected my mood, especially when I binged the last bit. I had to gear up to watch it. I've been putting in a lot of hours and had to find the right headspace for this kind of show. I had some empty calories type shows that I put on when I was in the office needing noise. this isn't thing. And perhaps it's a good thing there isn't much in my life, because while watching compelling characters be miserable is powerful, a little goes a long way.

I also thought the internal introspection of Carmy was a really really interesting look into the human psyche.

Spoiler!

It's probably not perfect. They glossed over some real decisions that would drive apart a partnership in real life, but they more than made up for it by hitting some of the details that other shows would gloss over.

Zooming out a bit, I think one of the big complaints is nothing happened. Well **** you. You're watching a show about starting a restaurant. Not everything needs to solve the worlds problems. They made good television that I personally found really compelling off a fairly simple subject matter. Much like much of renaissance art, beauty can be found in the most mundane details.

I'll continue to go to bat for this show. I see and acknowledge some of the criticisms here, but in today's environment, I'll watch a show like this - every time. That might all change if there is more of this, because like I said, it wasn't an easy empty watch. But the calories are worth it so to speak.

Excellent post, 100% agree.

Me too. Awesome take on it, Buehler. I just finally finished it last night and thought it was every bit as good as the prior seasons.

I think what happened is when he conceived of this show it was a 3 season arc. But after the success of season 1, FX/Hulu wanted him to make 4 seasons of the show. So you can imagine they needed to slow walk some of the stuff as a result and that leads to what’s effectively ann elongated season 4 that focuses more on some of the character development.

I thought it was so, so powerful. “Nothing happened,” but who the **** cares? Says something about our culture that needs immediate gratification and can’t enjoy a show like this for what it is.

Just finished S1&2 of Dark Winds on AMC. Really enjoyed it, glad to see S3 is green lit.

Tribal police on a Navajo reservation trying to solve a case with help and interference from the FBI.

I just finished watching The Detectorists on Prime and enjoyed it a lot. It is a BBC comedy about a group of people in rural England who go out metal detecting as a hobby. They have a club and go detecting with the hopes of finding Roman gold or some significant archeological finds. What they mostly find is ring-pulls, nails, buttons. They're nerds, of course - but the story is told in a very charming, heart warming manner.

It's comfort food in streaming form.

I've watched the first episode so far of season 3 and I absolutely hated it lol. I loved the show and season 2 was better than season 1, but the first episode of the new season just completely put me off. I'll watch it, but God damn that was a chore to get through.

Anyone watching the new Vikings Vahalla? I like it a lot better than the original Vikings.

Rome on HBO is just fantastic. I hadn't watched that in years and started watching it again recently. It sucks they had to cut it short down to 2 seasons but it is a good 2 seasons. I think Titus Pullo is my favorite character but you have to hate him in so many scenes as well.

The West Wing is brilliant.

A Democratic administration walks around treating everyone with a holier-than-thou attitude, virtue signaling at almost every possible moment.

And all the while:

One of the WH staffers is banging a DC hooker whom he also tries to use as leverage against Republicans.

The Chief of staff is an alcoholic and drug abuser trying to hide his past.

The press secretary is making out constantly with one of the reporters in the daily pool.

AND...they are covering up the fact that the President has multiple sclerosis.

And somehow Aaron Sorkin made all these people seem likable! LMAO

AND I'M ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH THE FIRST SEASON LMAO LMAO

HA! Shit, you're not wrong.

I always bristled at the 'good guys vs. bad guys' approach Sorkin took. But when you put it like that, you're pretty on point. Even the 'good guys' were scandalous; he just painted it differently.

But don't you dare besmirch Leo. If I could've found a way to apply for a Chief of Staff gig (but those are mostly occupied by friends of political lifers) I'd absolutely have done so. I friggen love Leo.
