There's another death I'm starting to think about - my own.

I'll be 60 this year. I'm an old fat guy with a lot of the standard old fat guy health issues. My dad, who was also an old fat guy, died at the age of 67. I kind of use that age as a baseline for my own life expectancy, and 2032 really isn't all that far off at this point. I'm fine now, but all life ends and that can change in a hurry. My dead cat was fine a month ago.

In the past, the advice I've always given and followed about losing a pet is to give it a few weeks and then get another pet. I'd love to get another kitten. But now, I'm at the age where it is reasonable to assume that any kitten I get will become a cat who outlives me. Is it selfish, or even cruel, to want another pet? I mean, people understand death, but a cat who sees me hauled off in an ambulance never to return won't.

I guess I could get an older cat, but then there's the issue of whether it would get along with the two I still have. Or maybe I should just stick with the two I've got. I just don't know.

Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit morose this evening.

I think the same thing about my age, pushing 62 and my mom left at 64. I have support from my SIL and my niece who both said get another pup and one of them will make sure it is taken care of. Also, my wife is younger and wants another dog ASAP!

In my opinion, get another kitten, give it a better life than the one it’s destined for and let things play out naturally

I guess we're in the same old leaky boat. My wife is also several years younger than me.

I'll probably get another one. Been a long time since I've had an actual kitten - our youngest was about 10 months old when we got him, so he was still playful but also pretty much fully grown. He's having a tough time today, because he was really bonded to Apollo. I think a kitten would do us both a lot of good.

Yeah you’re right. It’s kinda weird. Aside from the Chiefs winning 2025 is off to a really shitty start. Hopefully not a sign of things to come

This. Find one on the side of the road somewhere. One that doesn’t have a chance. That way no matter what happens things will still be better off

I decided to keep my cat because I had someone swear to me if anything were to happen they’d take him in. He’s only 2 and I’m 30. I think about my death way too much I suppose but life goes by really quick.

Keep your head high, brother. If there's on thing this board is GOOD for, it's this. We got you.

htismaqe 01-30-2025 06:58 AM

Get another cat. Or two or three. If you have the means.

We've lost a lot of pets. 3 in the past year. It happens because we have a lot of pets. We take in pretty much anything if we can. It's the least we can do when there's so many pets in need.

Papi is my best friend. He spent weeks 8 and 9 of his life in ICU at Iowa State. 2.5 pound puppies don't survive parvo. But they didn't count on him being demon-possessed. And here we are.

Do what you can. It's good for them and it's great for you.

Frazod 02-16-2025 03:42 PM

Well, it looks like we'll be adding another cat to the household. It was my original intention to wait until spring for kitten season and get an actual kitten, but our youngest, Chipper, was really bonded to the one that recently died, and he's been moping around for the past couple of weeks since his buddy went away. Casey, our oldest, is bonded to us and doesn't give a crap about Chipper one way or another (and it's mutual). So Chipper needs a new friend his own age.

We found a small, female, nearly adult kitten at the local shelter. She's on hold awaiting some bloodwork results, so the earliest we can bring her home is Tuesday. I'm hoping that because she's smaller and female Chipper won't perceive her as a threat and will bond with her quickly.

Potential new cat's current name is Cindy Lou, which will definitely change. I suggested we name her Taylor. The wife groaned and rolled her eyes, so the jury's still out on that one. LMAO

By the way, don't forget about yourself in trying to get them to get along. One of the ways you can help is to show them both attention and love so they're focused on you and not each other.

It's always a balancing act. I don't want to show so much attention to the new one that he gets jealous, although there's probably no way to avoid it. Before Apollo died I'd often get all three of them jockeying for position next to or on top of me when I went to bed, and sometimes they'd all get pissed off that the others were there and all three would jump off the bed. Cats are kind of selfish by nature.

But this new cat is mainly for him, not us. His behavior has changed over the past couple of weeks and I don't want that to devolve into anything negative/destructive. The idea of having multiple cats is for them to entertain each other, but it doesn't always work. I just hope I don't end up with three standoffish cats, because I really don't want to ramp it up to four again.

Cruised through a shelter this past week and came face to face with one of the most reactive, gamey, violent, mother****er dogs I've ever seen. Beast could leap five feet off the ground while lunge snarling and was close to escaping its enclosure. I'm expecting that any day now some pitbull-mom is going to wind up in the news requiring a face transplant. I mentioned the dog to the volunteers and they literally told me "he's just begging for lots of love". ****ing violent animal should be put down with a poison dart gun and the only thing blocking it from violence and murder are middle aged lesbians.

Say hello to Cheese, a sweet and affectionate mixed-breed dog with a heart as big as his name! This charming guy has come a long way during his time with us, transforming from a cautious and fearful pup into a friendly and trusting companion. Cheese is now a social butterfly, going from person to person with lots of wags, and soaking up all the love and attention he can get. He's great with handling, even in sensitive areas like his face, feet, and tail, making him a joy to be around. Playtime is where Cheese truly shines! He loves a good squeaky toy and is always ready to engage in some fun. While he isn't the most treat-motivated pup, a little spray cheese on a treat will have him wagging his tail in delight. Cheese has shown interest in meeting other dogs, though he's still learning the ropes of canine socialization. A meet-and-greet with any potential doggy siblings is recommended to ensure a perfect match. Cheese is ready to share his sweet and goofy personality with a family who will continue to nurture his confidence and show him the love he deserves.

Well, Taylor is home now. I'll post a picture of her once she's not quite so freaked out and hiding in the bottom of the closet in my wife's bathroom. Right now she is not a happy camper.

But she will be.

Here she is. Still hiding, but behind the loveseat now. At least she's out and about, and the other cats don't seem to be ****ing with her, which is good. She's also about a week past getting spayed, which probably isn't helping her disposition.

Cute cat - they definitely take a while to come out of their shell sometimes! We adopted a very skittish cat a few years ago, and it took a couple of months before she was willing to actually sit with us. She's still super skittish with other people, but she's also a huge cuddle bug with us. This is how she spends about 50% of her life these days.

Well, the new cat is still scared of everything and constantly hides. I've never had one like this before - all the ones I had before either got over it in a day or two or just strolled in like they owned the place. Hell, the last female cat I had came in as a five week old kitten, walked right up to the alpha who was ten times her size, and smacked him in the face. He ran from her. This one seems to be the complete opposite. Obviously this is going to be a process. How long a process is anybody's guess at this point.

I did finally get her to purr today, though. That was good sign.

i adopted an abused female (adopted her mate as well at the time). her mate ran the house on day one, but it took the other six weeks just to come to me, never saw her, I had to coax her out little by little. to this day 10 years later, she will only sometimes show her face to my wife, but only me, no one else.

Wife left it on the floor after refilling his auto feeder and bro got his chonky face stuck in it

He may have learned that technique looking at old photos of me at high school keggers

The shelter people didn't think she was abused. But she was an abandoned stray, and despite her young age has already had two kittens of her own. So obviously her life up until now has been difficult.

Sounds like a similar story to ours. She'll probably always be a skittish cat, but if you can be patient and get her to come out of her shell, it's pretty rewarding. Hang in there.

Taylor is finally coming out of her shell. I was able to pet her outside of her hiding place in the back of the wife's closet for the first time tonight, and she is interacting with the other cats and playing.

My current furry house companions:

https://i.imgur.com/IIwScVv.jpeg

The chub on the right was found in a cardboard box on the side of 435 highway along with 3 siblings. I adopted him out of the litter and have had him for about 8 years now. He's too smart for his own good, but always entertaining. Incredibly high energy. Plays fetch like a mother****er.

The one on the left my daughter abducted from my cousin's barn as a kitten. Feral as all hell when brought into the house, but now one of the most lovable snuggle cats I've been around. My daughter gets mad because the cat prefers me.

I thought they'd eventually be good friends. But after 2 years or so, they simply tolerate each other at best. You can see the look she's giving him in the pic, LMAO

GloryDayz 02-26-2025 07:11 PM

I love my travel, but when I get home like I did like last night, the welcome home from the puppies is, well, indescribable..

Frazod 03-13-2025 12:17 AM

Well, it's been about three weeks now. Taylor is still skittish as hell, but she's slowly coming around. She now spends most of her time in the den with me, where I spend most of my time. Her hiding spot is in the closet in this room now, but she's out frequently. She's gotten to be rather affectionate, as long as I'm sitting in my desk chair. If I get up or try to approach her anywhere else, she runs away, although she'll usually only move a few feet away instead of fleeing the area. It's very strange. Hasn't really warmed up to the wife at all, but since the wife still works and I'm home all the time, I kind of have an unfair advantage in that department. She has fully bonded with the next oldest cat, and they're definitely buddies now. He's generally in here with me as well, and she's most comfortable around the two of us.

She is a nimble little thing and despite her size a master jumper. I've seen her in high spots around the house that I've never seen any of my previous cats get to. She jumps effortlessly to spots they struggle to reach. Neither of the other cats are hostile toward her, but it really wouldn't matter if they were because she can easily outrun and outjump them.

She's a neat little cat. Glad we got her.

I’m not smart and don’t know how to post photos from my phone, in spite of accidentally accomplishing this feat a few months ago in a thread when I included an 80’s Pizza Hut menu. Pray for me.

But I got a couple kittens on December 6th. Two boys borne from the same litter October 29th.

They’re pretty great. They have different personalities, but they are definitely brothers and where one goes, the other one isn’t usually far behind. Think I really got lucky. These guys are mostly very chill. They definitely have their playtime, usually consisting of them playfully kicking the shit out of each other, finding bags and boxes to get into, stealing my socks and destroying plants, but what a couple of snuggle buddies.

Not one hiss in 3+ months, they watch me leave for work and meet me when I get home. They curl up near me at bedtime, and it’s really been fun adding these furry farts to my home. Went to the doctor this week for a checkup and my blood pressure was down. The only thing I’ve done differently since my last checkup was the addition of these kitties. The doctor wasn’t surprised. Fuzzy friends have that affect on humans.

Couple of stories…. Winston accidentally snuck by me into the garage one evening without me noticing. About ten minutes later, I caught his bro Cooper hanging out by the door leading to the garage. I open the door, boom, there’s Winston. Another night, I was watering plants in one room that I sorta keep off limits to the kitties because I don’t want all my plants destroyed. Apparently, once again, Winston snuck in. I went to bed, and for the first night, neither went to bed with me. But when I got up, Cooper was curled up outside the door of the room that I watered the night before, I open the door, and there’s Winston curled up. These boys have radar!

Anyway…. Cats are awesome. They’re just a couple of love bugs and they’ve made a big difference in my life. I love em and almost everyday there’s something new to laugh or smile about.

The easiest way I've found to attach personal images is to use the Insert Image icon (the yellow box with the mountain) and copy the link from Facebook. The only problem with it is sometimes the image stops being visible, even though the link is still there and I didn't change it.

You can also use the paperclip icon, but then you have to worry about size restrictions.

There's probably a better way, but I don't know what it is.

htismaqe 03-13-2025 06:39 AM

What kind of phone do you have? It's possible you are saving your photos to the cloud, which means you could generate links and share them directly.

My male Doberman hates snakes. He does the same thing, only he won't toss it. He just gives it the violent head shake like that dog did and kills it in seconds. No rattlesnakes directly where I'm at, so no worries.

Are there any veterinarians or professional dog groomers on Chiefsplanet?

I need to ask about the proper length of nails for a Husky.
