I like it. I like it a lot.

I hadn't really watched True Detective since S1. I tried an episode or 2 of season 2 I think.

I like the remote, isolated dark setting. I was a bit surprised how heavy it was on the supernatural. You get the sense they're going to "figure" that out. I've enjoyed it through two episodes. I didn't realize it was 6 episodes. That's awesome, I think most shows do better with less episodes.

I think so, too. There are a lot of series that are scheduled for 10 episodes (give or take) and it often seems like an episode or two are 'filler'. As if the writers have a story that is easily and completely told in 4 or 5 episodes, but they are contracted for more, so they meander down a non-important side story. It could be called character development, but more often than not that development doesn't add to the story.

That's one unintended consequence of streaming. It's FAR better to tell the right story than to fit it to a structure. Hopefully that increases.

I liked it. I didn't think it was as good as some of the reviews, but I thought it was a decent enough watch. One thing it did do was hook me pretty hard. I couldn't quit the shit, regardless of what I thought of it.

I really need to go back and re-watch S2

S1 was perfect so felt initially like S2 fell short but I do remember enjoying the dark, seedy atmosphere they created

crayzkirk 01-27-2024 06:04 PM

I got a 'free' Disney+ subscription through Spectrum and decided to watch the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials. Part of the way through the Capaldi era, I started to lose interest as the show started to move in a direction that I didn't enjoy. The Whitaker era continued this trend and with Tennant back to reprise the Doctor, I thought I would give it a try.

Well, I didn't think it was as bad as many said however... It wasn't good. I get it; some people don't feel their gender is correct. I get The Message; men bad, women good. Always check with someone before using certain pronouns.

Disappointed that another one of the shows that I liked is gone.

What is Disney going to do with Deadpool?

Sorry, I wasn't clear there. I was talking about the latest season. I only watched a couple eps from season 2 forever ago and never tried S3. I've enjoyed the new season with Jodie Foster so far

It had me for awhile, but ultimately was a complete mess of "shock drama"

Well produced and performed with extra credit for killing it on wardrobe and overall vibe of that era

Yeah, I watched that a few days ago. What a ****ing horror show. The major police theory is that they're faking Gone Girl? ****.

Speaking of Gone Girl, I just finished watching Sharp Objects last night. I've seen it on my HBO screen for years and just for whatever reason never got around to watching it. Pretty ****ing dark but enjoyed it thoroughly. And my mind was totally blown at the ending...love the insane twist and cut to black to finish it out.

The German show?

I watched the first season when it came out and enjoyed it quite a bit. Think I gave up somewhere in S2 when it became too much to follow.

I love Shameless and haven't been able to finish it yet. I have it all saved on my tablet and every time I go on a flight I am like... what do I have to watch on my tablet... oh Shameless... let me start this up... gratuitous sex scene... gratuitous sex scene... gratuitous sex scene... ehhh maybe watching soft core porn on a plane isn't such a good idea.

BWillie 02-02-2024 08:18 PM

Why didn't anyone ever tell me about Always Sunny In Philadelphia before? Show is hilarious. The characters are such dumbasses but it's great.

Buehler445 02-05-2024 10:14 AM

So I thought I'd dive into Mr and Mrs Smith on Amazon. I think I'm the only one, but I really liked the movie. Sure it was ****tarded in a lot of ways, but I really liked it. And I'm not a big Angelina homer. She's hot, sure, but I'm not a blind homer.

After 2.5 episodes, I'm having trouble with this. I am a bit of Donald Glover homer, and he's the best part of this. The Asian gal is pretty boring, and there is no chance she can fight. Angelina for what she is, sells the idea that she could fight and win pretty well. Plus the storytelling isn't as clever as they think it is.

Spoiler!

There are some good components. The New York stuff is pretty good. Pretty visceral, pretty grounded, and some of the house stuff is really beautiful. The world really has some feel. As a midwesterner, who's never been to New York, it isn't enough to keep me in the show.

Maybe it comes around, I'm trying to figure out if I should finish it.

DJ's left nut 02-05-2024 10:56 AM

The movie worked BECAUSE of Pitt and Jolie - their chemistry was outstanding and it holds up even today.

I just have no interest in this one. Even in the trailers, the chemistry just wasn't there.

KCUnited 02-05-2024 11:15 AM

Currently enjoying The Tourist on Netflix

Thriller/dark comedy set in Australia which gives it some Mr Inbetween vibes

Agreed.

It's worse than the trailers say. They try to be both "throw you into the world with little explanation" and also "envelope you in the world by belaboring menial tasks with great scenery".

It's ****ing boring.

It's ****ing boring.

You can pull that off if the female lead is hot.

Amazon did it with The Citadel. Which, objectively, was pretty mediocre. But I enjoyed looking at Priyanka Chopra. Plus, stanley Tucci is always worth a watch. So it worked...barely. And that's with Chopra, in addition to being hot, being extremely credible as a kicker of asses.

Replace her with an extremely mid, doughty looking chick who's attempts at 'sultry' mostly just appear 'annoyed' and you've lost me. At that point the show just has to be good.

This never looked like it would be. It just never gave me any reason at all to tune in.

Good reco

So having finished the 2nd season, I've decided a couple things:

1) They're probably trying a little too hard to distinguish themselves from the books. They're also leaning a little too heavily into 'subverting audience expectations'.

2) I like the show MORE than the books anyway. It's really well done and most of what they've added has been good from a storytelling perspective. I mean the whole concept of 'The Genetic Dynasty' doesn't even exist in the books. The emperors do exist but they're nowhere near as prominant. Demerzel barely exists in the books. I think Salvor is far better in the books than the series and I question pivoting to Gaal (who is something of an expository device in the books) as a central character. That seemed super forced.

But on balance, more of what they have done works than doesn't.

The initial episode of Tracker was released last night after the Chiefs 4th Lombardi.

I watched it this morning and enjoyed it. Justin Hartley was good in "This is us"

Good point. Without checking, is it new?

I am noticing that on a lot of the new stuff since the strikes are over. Seems like they are rushing to get some programming out.

I watched the entire series twice, a couple years in between. One of the best series on Netflix IMO, followed closely by "Breaking bad"

Anyone watching Expats on Prime? The first 3 episodes have been intriguing. Limited series…looks like 6 episodes total.

I’m positive I’m late to the game. But holy shit, Snowfall is ****ing awesome. We’re 3 episodes from finishing the series. The end of season 5 was bonkers, and the final season is as well.

I would have to disagree with you on this one. Both my wife and myself enjoyed it. It was a slow start to begin with but by the 3rd episode we were enjoying it. I think it was supposed to be a bit of a jumbled mess. The guy has amnesia and is trying to figure out his life and they left a bit open at the end because they plan on having another season.

Really?
Man I enjoyed this one. Yes it started slow, but it didn't follow a predictable pattern and I thought it was acted really well with great character development.
Even the ending had twists where you thought it would land here and it ended up on a different planet.
I give The Tourist a solid B+ for just being original.

Buehler445 02-23-2024 01:10 PM

I'll have to look into Snowfall. I think I checked out on the drug stuff, but if it's good, I'll watch it.

On a whim I started up Will Trent. I think I'm 7 episodes in and I'm in. Apparently it's on ABC. So this would be the first network TV thing other than live sports that I've given half a shit about in a good long while.

It's a cop show, so it's got some elements of over the top, but the characters are different enough and interesting. Im not in it for the realism anyway. We'll see how it ages, but I like it so far.

I can see that. The second season after a few episodes still has some good humor but the story a little too silly and convoluted. The first season I was actually laughing out loud multiple times probably every episode.

I really liked it , always take a little while to understand the dialogue with the stronger accents but I thought it was great , The movies you listed are definitely some of my favourites.

Wrong thread but I thought about starting The Gentlemen last night but decided to watch the Aquaman sequel instead.

Holy crap - that movie is baaaaaaad. One of the worst I've seen in a bit. The tone is all over the place, the action scenes aren't great, Jason Momoa cannot emote even a little bit. Amber Heard...has nice tits still. So that's cool.

But man, I typically defend DC movies as underrated and this one is just awful.

I liked the first couple episodes of Tracker - but I'm already over it. He has a 'superman' power of being able to arrive in a new location and immediatley find the person or clue he was looking for - like immediately! He defeats every foe, every situation with ease.

BigBeauford 03-19-2024 09:47 AM

I can't put my thumb on it, but every show on CBS looks the same and its very off-putting for me. Don't know if it's the color grading or lighting, but it's always apparent it's a CBS production.

Pretty much sums it up how I see it as well. Oh and the last two episodes they haven't shown him shirtless, so that is probably not sitting well with the female audiance.:D

I can't put my thumb on it, but every show on CBS looks the same and its very off-putting for me. Don't know if it's the color grading or lighting, but it's always apparent it's a CBS production.

National shows are made for old people. Slow words and easy to follow stories. Old folks don't stream.

Yep. My In laws ONLY watch CBS. And I mean ONLY. Nothing else is ever on in their house.

And the content is tailor made for them.

Halo on Paramount is so damn good.

If you choose from new ones, The Mandalorian is an excellent example of how to film. It certainly cannot be called boring. But I wouldn’t recommend it for the other Star Wars series.

Finished S1 Criminal Record. Really bland name for a British cops show on Apple TV+ starring Peter Capaldi.

A little slow the first couple eps but ended in an interesting way. Young cop gets an emergency call that maybe puts an old closed case from the older detective in question. Older cop takes offense or tries to halt any new investigation. That's basically the setup

Really? I guess we need to get rid of Amazon Prime, Paramount +, MGM +, Max and Netflix then?

Let me guess, you wear your baseball cap with the bill in the back to keep the sun off of your neck?

Maybe you’re not old?

Cannot recommend season 2 of Tokyo Vice enough. The first was solid but the second is special.

It's probably not "must watch" material, but School of Chocolate on Netflix was pretty cool.

OH SHIT. I didn’t know it dropped. Time to re-up my Max sub.

I've watched 4 episodes. Highly recommend. I love the chemistry between the lead and the lady playing Susie Glass. The dialogue is really fun so far
