Would be easy if I were still in STL, but moved the family over to KC a couple years ago.

Seeing this thread being posted in so much warms my heart.

Let’s keep this thing updated and help each other locate some bottles!

Cheers to you all.

So I'm on my 2nd glass of 1792 small batch.

This shit is good. First few sips I wasnt a fan the flavoring seemed kind of all over the place. As I settled in and drank more it all comes together more. It's a pretty damn good drink I'd give it an 80/100.

OnTheWarpath15 09-05-2020 04:44 PM

Just scored a bottle of Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel. Will sample tonight after the Derby.

Perineum Ripper 09-05-2020 05:17 PM

Four Roses Single Barrel for me tonight, while I bbq pork steaks and sweet corn

Boiled Chicken 09-10-2020 05:18 AM

Two year old article, but nice list of things in KC that are whiskey and not so whiskey related - especially after the quarantines are over. No mention of The Drum Room or The W (underrated in Lee’s Summit).

We carry 3 kinds. I’ll remind everyone that I work at a liquor store and can probably ship.

Been digging the Old Elk and the Jim Beam Blue Label Double Barreled....

Both have that deep oak barrel taste with a hint of the vanillas that come out of it...

jackkked 09-20-2020 08:01 PM

Anyone else try out the Uncle Nearest yet? Story is its based on the start of a free slave who helped a young Jack Daniels get going. I'm pretty impressed with the 1884

Hard for me to spend $80-100 unless I know what I''m getting, so no.

Especially when I can get bottles I love for way less.

1792 Full Proof tonight. Scored two bottles at the grocery store at retail, while the local liquor stores have it marked up 2X.

Just had my first glass and it was alright but I'm going to have a few more usually after a few and I've adapted to the taste I can give a true review on it.

I'm pretty tired too. Did arms and abs today then walked 5 miles with my 30 pound weighted vest. Looked forward to sitting on the couch drinking and listening to music all day.

This week sucked for me too.

It’s a decent pour for the money. 8 year age for about $35 is hard to beat with the crazy bourbon prices floating around these days.

Enjoy your night.

This week was dogshit for me and I think I'm gonna go get some bourbon tomorrow.

First choice- Rare Breed. You'll love it.
Second choice- McKenna (might be hard to find)
Third choice- 4roses single barrel
4th- Anything by High West

Cody Road Old Fashioned is pretty tasty, for a pre mixed old fashioned.

Recent pickups:

18 year old Macallan.
Wild Turkey Forgiven
Woodinville (did well in a taste test and bourbon guy at liquor store said I should try it)
Blanton’s

Blanton’s isn’t here often so whenever I see it, I grab a bottle

Pablo 10-03-2020 06:40 PM

I can't rationalize paying Macallan prices anymore. Macallan 18 is running $280-300 lately and that's just insane. There are WAY better 18 year old single malts out there for half the price. Macallan has become the Bose of single malts.

phisherman 10-03-2020 07:20 PM

Glendronach 18 is far superior at $150 a bottle.

Stopped myself after a couple because it was hitting like a ton of bricks and I've gotta stay up late and beat the shit outta my wife at MarioKart.

Had to go to something lower proof in vodka/cran.

Titty Meat 10-03-2020 08:42 PM

Yeah that EW single barrell grew on me about the 3rd or 4th pour. Pretty smooth for a 35 dollar bottle too.

Boiled Chicken 10-04-2020 04:53 AM

I tried out the Midnight Ritual last night. Partnership with Boulevard and Foundry. It was nice. Picked up a black label of High West Double Rye. It’s their limited release. I haven’t had their Double Rye before, but have had their Yippee Ki-yay series and MWND(which incidentally has made its way to KC again...only to be smoked in a matter of hours). HW also has a black label of American Prairie, but didn’t get it for same reason...hadn’t tried it. Not bad, $60 but anyone else given it a whirl?

Didn’t say I bought the Macallan. Was given to me by a friend.

Made an old fashioned with Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the bottle when first tried it a while back by itself, this drink is pretty tasty.

Just broke into a bottle of Devil's River bourbon that is 90 proof

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_hFZ2okw1...on_Whiskey.jpg

Interesting nose Peppery, vanilla. Caramel sipping kinda hot with a smooth finish. Not aged long enough but it is a new distillery.

I'll chime in again after a few.

frozenchief 10-06-2020 11:51 PM

I mentioned that I recently picked up a bottle of the Woodinville Bourbon Whiskey. I admit I was skeptical. It’s from Woodinville, WA. Not exactly a hot bed of bourbon, I understand.

But I have to say that it’s excellent. Long finish. Very smooth. On the palate it presents with caramel and vanilla notes as might be expected. However, it has a creaminess, for lack of a better word, that is quite rare. Similar to smoking a Cohiba. Also shows strong honeyed floral notes. The char is light but noticeable. The char does not overwhelm but instead brings other flavors together and intensifies them, much like salt with meat.

Anyway, I am going to be grabbing another bottle or two shortly. For more info, here’s the website:

https://www.woodinvillewhiskeyco.com...urbon-whiskey/

It’s about $35 or so in my neighborhood so it hardly breaks the bank. If anybody on here comes across it and tries it, let me know what you think.

cooper barrett 10-07-2020 02:44 PM

Tell me that it lives up to this review
https://www.breakingbourbon.com/revi...raight-bourbon

then read this review of what I drank over the weekend

https://flaviar.com/devils-river-whi...-notes-reviews

Think ones worth $15-20 buck more than the other?

To me. Devil's a great whiskey... if not trying to impress someone, wouldn't buy it at retail price point.

I haven't seen Devil's River in my neck of the woods. Based upon what you've posted, I will definitely pick up a bottle if I do see it.

As far as worth, that's really up to the consumer. In my neck of the woods, Wild Turkey 101 and Jim Beam and other bourbon is usually about $27-30 a bottle. Buffalo Trace is usually about $35, sometimes less on sale. Knob Creek little less, maybe $31-33. Shipping and taxes play a big part in the price so until I see it up here, I have no idea what the price is. Wouldn't surprise me to see it around $30 a bottle generally but until I taste it, I have no idea which I prefer. And if I do prefer the Woodinville, do I prefer it at the cost? No idea.

I just bought the bottle of Woodinville and really liked it. Haven't seen it too many places so I just figured I would let people know what I thought about it so that if someone on this board sees it they can say, "I've heard about that and I know one guy likes it. Maybe I'll give it a try." That's all.

cooper barrett 10-07-2020 06:20 PM

They can keep it at the prices. I see on line for the US ($195)

IMHO It's not selling overseas so there selling it here:D
In the end of Sept the AU$$ was down so it's less than $120US retail in Au.
Shipping from Au is impossible, anyone traveling?

Been on the hunt for a bottle of MidWinters Night Dram but have struck out. Picked up these two as a consolation. The Double Rye! is a limited release that was finished 14 months in a Syrah barrel. Reminds me of the Yippee Ki Yay that was discontinued.

I just picked up a bottle of that for Turkey Sacrifice Day. It's . . . interesting. The finish is unlike anything I've tried before. Still making up my mind if i really like it. But right now, different is good.

Think this is a kind of basic recipe.

There's some really good modified ones out there.

I'll put it this way: I like my whiskey straight and around body temp (don't ask me how I do that part), maybe every once a decade I like it on ice. But I like Manhattans okay.

Old Fashioned

https://assets.epicurious.com/photos...020520_619.jpg

1 scant teaspoon simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters, plus more to taste
1 half dollar–sized slice orange peel, including pith
2 ounces good-quality rye or bourbon
1 maraschino cherry
PREPARATION
In old-fashioned glass, combine simple syrup and bitters.
Fill glass halfway with ice, then stir about a dozen times.
Add enough ice to fill glass.
Squeeze orange peel over glass to extract oils, add peel to glass, and add whiskey.
Stir just until drink is cold and alcoholic bite has softened, about a dozen times.
Garnish with cherry, swizzle stick, and straw.

Idk what places will do tastings but the Belfry downtown is a great whiskey bar, and Julep in Westport is pretty good too. Literally every whiskey you can imagine.

I'd also recommend the Yellow Spot and Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Special Reserve.

I'm a RED fan but the Spot's green is darned good too.

I was gifted a Flaviar subscription... will receive a few mini bottles and then can purchase a bottle of my favorite (included in the subscription). Repeat quarterly.

Seems like a cool way to try some bourbon while building up the home selection.

My dad just got a bottle of Red Spot, I like the yellow a lot more than the green.

Red breast 12 year is pretty dang good.

Stimulus spending

4Roses Barrel Proof OESK - This was a store pick and I wish I would have bought a case of it. It’s gone now
J.Mattingly 2020 Tonic - Another store pick. Not sure where they sourced the whiskey from but it’s damn good
J.Mattingly 2020 Tonic Rye - Same as above
Bulleit Single Barrel - Another store pick. It’s ok although I think I prefer the 10yr.
Willet 4 year Rye - Have tried this a few times but this is my first bottle. It’s good
Bakers - Stumbled across one still wearing the old label

OESK and OBSK are my favorite Four Roses recipes. I've never had a bad batch of either from store picks.

At $100 a bottle, it should be.
