This is the element of his game that reminds me so much of Dhop, and the body control is really special. He's a 4.5 guy, not a burner, so if you're conditioned to lust for Hill-style WR's, you're not going to be thrilled.
Now, if you want to argue that maybe he relies on that too much, sure, that may be. But if he's singled covered, you can pretty much throw it to him high and he's going to come down with it. How frustrating has it been to watch Higgins and Chase do that to us for the last few years?
As a Juju comp, I'd say they can do similar things, although the '22 version of Juju is much, much slower and less explosive due to the constant knee thing and prior injuries. I think that's why KC let him go. He wasn't a guy that could afford to slow down much at all and still be effective. He was getting by on smarts and technique at this point.

From watching all videos I could find, other than looking slower than his 40 time, it's the lack of separation that concerns me. Making contested catches is great, but if you can't separate from college DBs, you certainly aren't going to separate from NFL DBs, and it won't be as easy to make those contested catches.
Just from watching what's available online, it seems like Mims would fit the offense better. He is more explosive, and even though he is smaller than Rice, he seems to be more physical with defenders, and creates separation and space, and then makes big plays.
Rice doesn't seem very explosive after the catch. Again, I like Rice, and I hope Mahomes is right about him. But, if they think Toney can really be the WR1, why wouldn't you want to add another receiver with the same type of skills?
When it's all said and done, we still have the best QB on the planet, and he made Albert Wilson and Wrong Way Robinson look like good receivers, so as long as Rice learns the offense quicker than Skyy Moore, Rice should have a nice rookie season.
