Floppy ears are cool too. Have them do his nails, teeth, clean his ears, express the anal glands, and furminate if he’s shedding. Sooner he gets used to it the better. Also consider the dew claws. Good looking boy.

*(edit)He’ll have to be old enough to have had his rabies and vax before you can do this.

Still a really hard decision. Cutting the bone and putting an implant for life for a ligament tear doesn't really sit well with me still, but it was the best option over a lateral suture or letting him live with a lame leg.

My lab has had TPLO done on both her legs - one at 2yo, one at 4yo. She recovered great from both, and you'd never know she ever had an issue. She's 8 now, and still going strong, though a hard day at the beach or park, and she feels it a bit.

Get your pup on fish oil and joint supplements (dasequin) going forward. Arthritis is a given long-tem after the surgery, but supplements will help reduce it. Also, be prepared for the other one to go at some point - it's a high likelihood that if they do one, they'll do the other.

Hammock Parties 08-02-2021 02:56 PM

Man, don't mess with sketchy breeders. Trust your instincts.

I don't know where that puppy is going but apparently it won't be home with me. :(

No. See previous post.

Probably going to get one from a breeder who isn't a complete waste of human skin on Sunday, though.

But my heart breaks for the dog I won't be bringing home.

So we had my nephew's wedding at my house on Independence Day. While we were preparing the house, the bride's sister was inside and saw my 3 boxers. She manages the humane shelter in Holton and they just so happened to have a boxer that needed a home. He was an old boy (they thought 6-8 years) and was emaciated because they said they couldn't get him to put on any weight. I have a soft spot for boxers so I figured why not give him a home for the remaining few years he has.

This pic is not the greatest but it does kind of show how skinny he was when we got him. You could clearly see his hip bones and ribs. And no, he's not allowed on the furniture normally. I just thought it was funny the way he was curled up and looking at me.

Lzen 08-05-2021 08:00 AM

Here he is after a couple of weeks. He was just 51lbs when we got him. He has since gained 10 lbs. He's just as tall as the other boxer in this pic, Chief. But Chief is a good healthy weight of about 70lbs or so (haven't checked his weight in a few months). From what I was told, they hadn't been caring for him much. He's a good dog and well behaved for the most part. I can't understand how people can treat them that way. Also, we have him on good food now, so that helps.

All these animals returned to a shelter having done nothing wrong other than be happy they found a home. Only to be ****ed.

And here you are in the market and could give shit about them because you want something selfish, specific, and "I'm good". What an asshole you are. A total dickwad.

Every animal forced into euthanasia is in part due to you and your selfishness. You don't care about the dog. You care about you and the dog YOU have.

I don't know how you can live with yourself given the choice of the right thing vs. wrong thing and you choose the obvious wrong and kill dogs.

You are a real piece of shit, dude.

I can't figure out if you're serious. Yes, I agree that it is better to adopt. Definitely this. But I'm not going to put it on someone who wants a specific breed of dog and would prefer to raise it as a puppy. It is completely unfair to blame them for the shelter dogs being euthanized. That's going too far, IMO. In other words, I think you're being a douche.

And in case you're wondering, I have 4 dogs. And all of them are rescues. I just posted my newest rescue just a few posts ago.

I already made a thread on this but since blowy bumped this thread I'll post it here too. I'm fostering a pair of Pitt/Corgie(?) mix pups through a rescue in Camden, MO called Reno Ranch. Anyone interested in a pittie mix should HMU.

(Though my little brother is currently considering adopting Bacon... he has a shit ton of siblings who were all found by Lexington, PD abandoned in the middle of the highway at midnight)

This girl showed up at my house about 6 yrs ago. She spent the night with Dodger then shot out the front door the next morning. Leaving Dodger worn out with a smile on his face. I posted on FB and a few other local sights for lost pets but didn't get a response.

A couple years after that I seen her chained up at a house a few blocks away. Really bugged me to see her like that. Then she shows back up a year later. I let her in and her and Dodger played a while before I took her back to her home. To Dodger disappointment and frustration she had been fixed. I told her owner if he ever wanted to get rid of her to let me know.

Then yesterday she showed back up at my front door again. I decided I was going to try again get him to give her up. This time her owner looked like he was pretty poor health. Oxygen tubes running to his nose, not breathing very well, eyes sunken in. Let's just say he shouldn't be buying any green bananas.

Anyways, he finally gave in and said I could have her. So, 6 years after she showed up here she finally has a home with a fenced yard, and her own pack.

We had to say goodbye to our dear sweet Ecko today. This is hard, really hard. She was the first dog my wife and I had together, and was the sweetest dog I've ever seen. She's been declining in health the last year and we knew her time with us was short, but the last week let us know it was time. She left us just a few months short of her 18th birthday.

Rest well baby girl, you're not in pain anymore. :deevee: :deevee: :deevee:

So my black lab is starting to get up there a bit (11; still plenty of gas in the tank though) and the Rotty has finally turned into a halfway decent animal. Still won't stop eating socks and toilet paper, but I'm at least about 80% sure he's not going to eat the boy at this point. He still doesn't trust him, but he mostly just grumbles at him and leaves the room now.

As I typically take about a year or more to pull the trigger, I figured I'd put out feelers for anyone that's familiar with any Bernese Mountain Dog breeders. Cost kinda matters, but not really - not if I can find one with an excellent cancer history. Those poor Berners tend to die by 7-8 years old because cancer has just run roughshod through the breed.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

My poor boy, Chief. His eye started swelling up. Took him to the vet and they thought he had a bee sting. She prescribed Benadryl and a couple other things but he didn't get better. A couple of days later, we had to take him back to the vet. She prescribed antibiotics. This was a couple of weeks ago. Poor guy was not feeling well at all. He's getting better now, though. Almost healed.

Dart, Going to have to deal with that as well soon. My wife and me took in Toto from a friend of hers who was moving and could't take him back in 06. He was 4 1/2 at the time. He's 21 now and still gets around pretty good. He doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain but is developing a cough which the vet says is due to a heart condition. He's been a great dog but I've been lovin on him more because I know time is getting short. I'm not looking forward to that last visit to the vet.

He's a terrier mix mutt. Weighs about 20 lbs or so. Lot bigger than the movie toto. Not crazy about the name toto but we left it alone. Bad luck to change a dogs name.

alanm 12-22-2021 02:14 PM

We also have a mini version of Tote's. That's what I call him. Wife found her at a garage sale in a hamster cage when she was 8 wks old. Got Sophie for $10. She's Daddy's girl. Also have a Shis Tzu Baxter. He's quite the character.

Louie lost his shit the second I came into the house with a box that was peeping madly. Once settled into the kennel he had to go in there and check them out. He sniffed, he licked, and was very very sweet to them

He planted himself across the opening and is refusing to let any of the other dogs come anywhere near the babies.

I called Louie up to go to bed and he came... reluctantly. I told him that it was ok and to go check on his babies. He shot back down the stairs and refused to come upstairs for the rest of the night.

I've literally had to kick him out of the house to go be outside and run around for a bit. Whenever he is inside though this is where I will find him now.

He's as cowy as a crusty old ranch horse too.

I love the ring around Lux's eye! How old is Lux?

We think that Louie is a Bluetick Coonhound crossed with German Shepherd. His ears are up like a GS but think his momma was the GS mix. Whatever he is... he is the best dog we have ever had. Louie loves love more than anything else in the world.

His momma with her adoptive person (no clue who he is but if you happen to be on ChiefsPlanet... I would love to get Salsa and Louie reunited for a visit!):

https://i.imgur.com/nu1YaOB.png

Louie is considerably bigger than his mom... he weighs 70lbs leading me to believe that any GS genetics he got from his mom and his, unknown, and daddy was a bluetick. It also makes sense because the man loves to scream at things. He barks at the door but he screams at coyotes, racoons, and squirrels. We don't know for sure though because he came from a rescue. I traded a peach and a pear tree for him.

Best Deal EVER.

We will know for sure here within the next 30 days because I couldn't resist and we got him a dog dna test kit for mutts.

Eh... one more for the road.

Bacon, Tom, with a guest appearance by Louie at the end.

So, last Tuesday this guy was going nuts when the Fedex guy was dropping off a package. This is normal every time we get a delivery. This time, however, he did something to injure himself. The wife and I were at work but my son was there and he heard it from downstairs. Said he had never heard such a blood curdling scream from a dog.

Didn't think a lot of it because I've had dogs tweak something and then a day or two later, they're fine. Well, this time he was not better the next day. If anything, he was worse. He couldn't really walk as his whole left side was not functioning properly. So we took him to the local emergency vet and they diagnosed him with a probable bulging disc in his neck/back (4th vertebrate, I think).

They sent us over to the Kansas State Veterinary Health Center emergency. He spent a few days in there, the first couple just waiting to get an MRI. The MRI confirmed the bulging disc and he had surgery to remove the debris. His condition didn't change the day after surgery but the following day he was already getting better and walking.

We brought him home and now he's confined to cage rest for 2 months. I can already tell he's going to absolutely hate this since he loves to always be around me. I was down in the basement yesterday and he was whining because he had to be upstairs in his cage. But it has to be this way. This is especially important since we have 2 other dogs and my son, who is staying with us temporarily until he gets back on his feet, also has 2 dogs.

He's got several staples in his neck. This whole thing cost over $4k. Damn, dog.
I know some people would never spend the money on a pet but I did. He's my buddy. I also have insurance that should reimburse for a portion of this.

Lzen 04-27-2022 12:36 PM

Not sure why those pics posted rotated like that. They weren't rotated when I attached them.

You're a good dude for spending it on him.

LMAO Supposed to have my dog on crate rest for 2 months after his knee surgery. Couldnt do it to him. Ended up putting my mattress on the ground and he was confined to my room except for pee breaks.

Good on you for getting him the proper care.

I feel so sorry for him that he has to spend so long in that cage. I know it’s for his own good, but damn.

My chocolate lab has our 11 acre yard, and 30 acres of timber to roam. My son and his family have 2 dogs that stay in the house, but have a small fenced in backyard. Every few weeks they come up with the dogs and let them run for a couple days. All 3 of them have a ball. They have to come in at night, but in the morning, they’re chomping at the bit to get back outside with zeke.

Lzen 04-27-2022 01:05 PM

Yeah, we live on 2.5 acres. My dogs love to run around on our property. I was walking him this morning on the leash around the yard so he could do his business. Next thing I know, he sees something and he tries to start running. This knucklehead doesn't even know how bad he was injured. ROFL

I would consider doing something like that but with the other dogs around, that wouldn't be wise.

Well, I had to put my buddy down this morning. I was pulling a trailer out and he got under it. I had to shoot him and bury him. I feel like a total piece of shit. It was getting to be close to the end for him, but I didn't want it to be like that, and I didn't want to be the one to do it. Pretty tough day for your guy Buehler445.

He was a 12.5 year old Australian Cattle Dog. Went to work with me every day, he was my buddy. No matter the shit day I had he was always there to be happy and be my buddy. Never failed to make me feel better. He was getting cantankerous in his old age, but he was the best dog I've had by a wide margin. Just a phenomenal dog.

RIP Chief Dog. I miss my friend. :(
