As far as taking risks to stay on top. This is a far cry from filming or deflating

LMAO God Damn. Can we table this discussion until, like, September? Then we'll actually have a real idea if Veach and Burkholder are ****ing reeruns or if this was much ado about nothing and we stole a potential top 10 talent at 32.

Everybody's way too sure of themselves.

This thread is gold so far. LMAO

That's what I don't get. Veach already admitted Burkholder cringed and was very leery of the injury at first and only after a ton of due diligence were they comfortable with making this pick.

Maybe they really are just foolhardy and so desperate for a franchise LT that they took Simmons, all risk be damned, or maybe they're privy to medicals we aren't and other teams didn't do enough work on him to find out one way or the other. We'll see come August, because Reid was adamant about him being good to go at training camp. If he's not it's going to be very concerning.

We’ve done great drafting OT recently so I’m fully confident in this pick.

Well, I think the reality is somewhere in between, most likely.

It's a big risk, but it's a done deal. Let's get on board and be hopeful.

EXACTLY, this was a pretty good scenario, Veach said they did a ton of homework on Simmons and that all the medicals said the knee looked really good. A lot of mocks had Simmons gone like 5-7 picks before the Chiefs at pick #31

I also love the fact that Veach said it's a long season and that Jaylon Moore has to stay healthy, I think he has finally learned the lesson of having great OL depth

Mr. Kotter 04-25-2025 06:48 AM

If he turns out NOT to be Trezelle Jenkins, and something closer to Eric Fisher… I’ll take that bet. 😉

tmax63 04-25-2025 06:48 AM

If this kid was the best LT in the draft before the injury then, if he gets back to 85-90% of what he was that would make him better than most of the tackles in the draft. I do have a fair amount of faith in the Chiefs medical staff. 8 OL taken in the 1st round (2-3 guards) but sounds to me like he went about where you'd expect. I read this morning he was already doing sled work and other drills and he's coming to a team where he can compete, not be handed the job. If he's needs a little time he can get it here. I won't condemn this pick but rather will take a wait and see attitude. The Chiefs have lost 2 SB's because of their OL and for all yall screaming because they didn't get Burden, PMII can't pass it to him on his back.

But much more interesting, the dude got a staph infection while rehabbing in the Browns' facility (and he sued them for it and settled), had multiple further surgeries, and.... wait for it....

Do you feel like this guy is a good comp for the Simmons situation?

He’s one of the few OL who has had it. So it’s one of the comps you can look at.

I didn’t do anything more than take some notes on paper as I was looking into it, so I guess I conflated “early in his Browns contract” with his rookie deal. Oops.

Weird that the two OL examples that are easiest to find are both guys who tore their patellar tendons while on second deals with the Cleveland Browns. Are we sure they don’t use the same trainers as the Chargers?

But if you don’t want to look at him and throw it out as an outlier, you can look at Conklin (whose other knee exploded the year after coming back from this, and who is just now coming back from that).

The part that makes me the most apprehensive here is that even if you WANT to say he’s a positive outlier because the Chiefs doctors checked him out and are confident they are, the truth is Simmons apparently isn’t cleared for strenuous enough activity to truly test whether he is.

If all he’s cleared for right now is 225-pound squats as reported on Wednesday, we’re nowhere close to seeing if the power and strength and explosion and torque and flexibility from this knee are the same.

They can look at the knee and be happy with how it healed and confident he’s not going to develop a staph infection and convinced the joint is sound, with no loose bodies. They can probably even predict if tendinitis or early arthritis are issues and be confident they’re not.

But none of that is the real concern with this injury.

I’m crossing my fingers and hoping it works. It’s a tremendous advantage for the Chiefs if it does. I’ll be glad to be on the wrong side of this one, if that’s how it works out.

GordonGekko 04-25-2025 06:49 AM

Now it's time for Veach to select the next all pro DB

This is such a tired narrative.

They've taken one T inside the top 75 picks since Fisher. One.

Stryker 04-25-2025 06:51 AM

So, I went to bed before the pick (early day today), but this pick was inevitable. We knew it was going to be Simmons the whole time. But, to take him at 32 and NOT move up to get him and gain a 5th round pick too? What is not to love about how this turned out? It happened and we move on. :thumb:

staylor26 04-25-2025 06:52 AM

Also, Heck doesn't need to do much coaching or development with this one. It's literally all about the health.

Sassy Squatch 04-25-2025 06:53 AM

Personally would've been much more keen to hop up a couple spots for Conerly once he slid into the late 20s but from what I've read that was never our intention and Simmons has been the apple of their eye for a while.
