I've wanted to upgrade software for years, but a hardware migration takes 10% of the work that a software migration does (and still is a ton of work). Thus, the ~5-year cycle of new server upgrade that works well for a bit and then eventually runs into more issues.

If you guys don't mind sharing. What exact HW and Software is CP currently using?

I believe we have a lot of IT people myself included on this website that might be able to give some advise on a good path forward.

We have one box that's realistically not much faster than a computer you could buy today at Best Buy that's largely maintained by one guy in his free time. Oh, and it's running on software that isn't even supported anymore.

It's like saying, "Well, any old PC can do 4K video editing these days" and pretending like it shouldn't be an issue for someone trying to do it on an Intel Celeron PC running Windows XP.

Trying to read from a 16 million row table should be milliseconds on a ten year old think pad using an off the shelf database (sqlite) with a few GB of ram (assuming your drives aren't 10 years old). I could load up an ancient version of Postgres and get the same results. 16 million records in a database is jack and shit for even database systems developed thirty years ago. You aren't making any sense. If you're telling me that your hardware is too old to expect that level of performance, well then we're in violent agreement.

Advice on systems isn't really the roadblock here.

Understand. Deciding on the best upgrade path is usually the hardest part.

Personally I work with enterprise servers for a living. But can't tell you if any of my knowledge would be applicable.

On a side note you would be amazed by some of the old code that is still out there. Hell all Pizzs Hut base code is still from the 70s. 😆

I went to one of them and got a software engineer job right out of school and have been doing it for years now. Best decision I made was a 4 month IT boot camp.

That’s cool. I’ve always wondered how legitimate those are. I was just going to call them though I’m not tech savvy enough to do it. Hoping they could walk me through how to fix the issue since DaFace is looking for help and suggestions on this.

Maybe the best solution is to start a brand new ChiefsPlanet with new software, lock ALL old threads from any new postings and signups, keep the site up for viewing and ads to generate income with a link on the new site, make everyone signup on the new site with their old user names, and then there is NO migration.

All you need is a new server.

Seems much faster, no migration of all the old stuff except user data.

Am I missing something? :hmmm:

That's a great idea until a bunch of trolls sign up with other member's usernames for the lols. Because you KNOW that will happen.

Just to be clear, I'm just here to answer questions. I'm happy to provide a little insight into the issues, but there are no decisions that I'll be making. I'm happy to pontificate about my views on the best new software, but I have no desire to get into it any further than I already am. :)

The barrier here is largely just Kyle finding time to deal with it, not Kyle figuring out how to do things.

Comparing Sqlite performance and ancient, or even modern, MySQL is no comparison.

Big issue with these types of community softwares is that table indexes do not get set. Especially when you start adding in mods.

A good indexing could speed things up considerably but you are still running antiquated software. Both the bb software and the backend services.

vBulletin 3.8 is also just horrifically bad at query efficiency. I just checked for fun, and loading this page executed 39 queries just to give you an idea. Multiply that by 1000 people all mashing the reload button on game days, and it's just a mess. Plus it does all sorts of joins instead of utilizing indexes efficiently.

They've improved a lot of it on newer versions, which, again is why my personal preference would be to rip the bandaid off so we could get on software that's actually designed to work in 2024.

Considering that the latest version of vBulletin is 6.0.2, that makes perfect sense and should be the goal. :thumb:

(But again, only one person's opinion matters here.)

Well, I'd think your opinion matters quite a bit since you seem to do quite a bit of the front-end tweaking. $200 isn't bad, would we need a whole new server to slowly migrate too?

I'm not sure how the hosting works but maybe some others could help work on the themes are look of the new forum software if they only needed access to the new server. I know AC would probably have to migrate the data.

I'd say switching to SSD or NVMe drives would net the biggest bang for the buck, assuming the server hardware supports them. That would likely at least cut down on the amount of time things would be offline.

I think I asked this a long time ago, but what about moving to a cloud solution like Xenforo cloud and increasing revenue via donations or ads to pay for the costs? It sounds like AC is busy with his day-to-day job and his time is limited a bit. That would shift these outages to being someone else's problem to solve.

I've wondered about Xenforo cloud as well. Our traffic levels would likely be in their Enterprise tier that would require custom pricing (so more than $250/month). Whether our ad revenues would cover it, I don't know.

Since this was bumped again, outside of the in memorandum section (which can be re-created easily) why exactly is a merger needed? Are there weirdos coming back and looking up old posts on the regular? And if so, should you care?

This place will fill up so fast just because of the novelty of recreating it new.

And Xenforo pro cloud guys are absolute professionals and Austin would be taking the headache of having to play EMS off his hands.

Again, I can only speak for myself and my limited understanding. I'd hate to lose the history, but it's not an absolute deal-breaker if we had to. But that said, I don't THINK that it's insurmountable to have both (a new system and migrate threads).

I've always wanted to ask if you had a favorite, among your family's products? It's not a popular choice, but I have always liked Little Orphan Orange and Sir Isaac Lime. I tell people that, and they're all, "But...but...what about Strawberry Short Kook or Poncho Punch?" To which I'll respond, "What about the,?"

I probably shouldn't put you on the spot with a question like that. I mean, what are you supposed to say, right?

Also, it's probably not my business. But it seems like there would be some room for expansion in the family - might I suggest Leo Lemon?

There is a little insider tech tip I learned several years ago that has gotten me out of some hairy situations. There are three keys on your keyboard that most people wouldn't know even exist. I'm pretty sure I'm about to make the heads of some Microsoft people explode.

DO NOT try this, unless you are, like, really good with computers. This only works if you hold all three of them down AT THE SAME TIME.

Honestly, it might be slightly irresponsible for me to even share this. But I gave you a warning.

The three keys are Ctrl, Alt, and Delete.

I have an extra VBulletin 5 license if you need it, was going to use it on a Huskers board. Not sure if I can transfer it.

I might upgrade my server to 6 sometime soon if I can stop being lazy.

Not sure what your traffic is like, but have you looked into vBulletin Cloud? I've been pleased with it.

That's not really something you should be sharing in an open environment like this. Certain knowledge comes with great responsibility.

If nothing else, think of the children.

If you can't handle a FREELY ACCESSABLE entertainment website like ChiefsPlanet going down for a few hours or a day for server maintenance without losing your shit...I hate to break it to you, but that's a 'you problem'.

Maybe find a hobby? Or be with your family, God forbid?

I am NOT a HATER! I LOVE planned downtimes but, reality is reality. We are down supported versions of software, left late to optimize the database and we are NOT scoring with the search tool. I do not understand what is going on with our SQL as well as what the hell is going on with the SERVER! Will we post during the playoffs, YES! Will we be able to find that random opinion we posted 6 months ago? NO! THIS SUCKS!!

Nothing like here, maybe 50 users at max in a day in and out. I'll check into it and their pricing.

What a great job…
I’d sweep the cig butts off the parking lot, and threaten the bastards I caught flipping them for minimum if I could find my way over there.

Has the server run out of RAMs, get plugged into 120v instead of 220v, or forget the stepping process?

I leave for a couple of weeks and DeFace's shit goes to shit.. LMAO...

displacedinMN 02-26-2025 06:52 PM

These days, the issues are usually caused by the server getting hammered by bots. We currently have around 32k "guests" on here to give you the idea. Every once in a while I go in and try and figure out a set of IPs to ban, but it's kind of like banning Clay's IP and assuming he'll never come back.

My theory is that everyone and their dog is out there training AIs on just about everything they can grab on the internet.

It could probably be solved by moving to different server infrastructure, but that's above my pay grade.
