KC hadn't really valued guards this way in the past. But when you can win in the middle it makes modern offense deadly.
Really want to see how they finish this off. |
BOOM!!! Great stuff. But man I wanted Trent Williams BAD!

Having a consummate pro next to a rookie LT is about the smartest thing you could do to protect your QB. I'm not advocating for a rookie LT but putting a stud next to him would be a 16mil/yr alternative to a 20-22mil/yr LT especially if the Chiefs have someone they really like in the draft.

Meh.
Would have preferred Silverback. |
Part of the value Thuney brings is he can play almost any OL position. LG is his best position but he played a lot of tackle last year. It gives us flexibility to keep adding to the OL and not having to worry about the position they are best at.
If we add Silverback, this will have been an elite FA period regardless of what other moves we make. |

Another reason this is a critical piece in the next phase of our offense is that it allows Mahomes to actually exist in the pocket for more than 1 second without having to sprint out, scramble, or drop 15-18 yards.
If we can actually develop a pocket, it will limit the effectiveness of the opposing edge-rushers because the angles will be more favorable to our Tackles. |

This might be an adaptation to build the OL to Mahomes. Stay Tuned. |

So no, NOT top tackle money. |
if you have a once in a lifetime QB you protect his blindside.....the money should have went there and not for an interior lineman in my opinion

If we had a badass LT as well? Damn EDIT: I shouldn't have said best Saints teams, but at least the ones circa 2010, when they had Nicks and Evans at guard |
If we don't land Williams, at this point I'd rather just draft another OT, see how things go, and experiment with kicking Thuney out to LT for a season. Would be pretty meh on Reiff. I've seen a bunch of Vikings games, and Reiff makes me soft.
"But with a great LG..." Brian Waters wasn't enough to make Jordan Black not a huge giant piece of shit. Reiff isn't Jordan Black-level bad, but I wouldn't call him a big upgrade from replacement level. He's as meh as it gets, and if I could have Fisher on his old contract or Reiff on a cheaper deal, I'd rather have Fisher. Injury recovery and all. |
I’m going ok if we’re overpaying if it means better protecting Mahomes. Now go get a tackle.
|
Thuney at NC State per (Patriots.com)-Did not allow a sack in 589 snaps during 2015 ACC play from his left tackle spot.
|
Give me Sam Cosmi in the first this year.
LT: Cosmi LG: Thuney C: Allegretti RG: LDT RT: Niang That's going to get the job done. The left side of the line could be elite in pass pro, especially on play action. |
there's nothing surprising about the projected Williams numbers. Thuney was not a consolation prize.
Veach has decided he's sick of bullshit play on the offensive line and is going whole ass on the problem. Williams is still coming. It'll be shades of Roaf and Waters over there for the next 3-4 years. |

Veach is going to fix the offensive line goddamnit. |

Not a guarantee we land him, but they're still swinging for the fences. |
This seems like an excellent signing. Maybe a slight overpayment but it instantly improves the interior OL. If we can somehow get Trent Williams, damn that would be sick. If there is anyone who can pull it off, it's Veach.

Seriously guys. The wailing and gnashing of teeth to Schefter's tweet in the OP is ****ing priceless LMAO

If we sign Silverback, Mahomes may not get sacked again.
Like, ever. Hyperbole, but with Niang snd Silverback at the tackles and Thuney at guard and a good center from the draft, he won’t get sacked much by anyone snd Clyde should be able to explode. Also, we will always have time to run WASP. |

You know what at this point I fully expect us to land Williams. I have changed my tune on this. With rap sheet saying we’re still in on him and what do we have that other teams don’t have?? We have a BRETT VEACH!! When he wants somebody he gets him. He will do whatever it takes to get his guy. No one is better and I repeat no one is a better GM in this league than him
|
I like it. I mean, how could you NOT like it? He was the best guard available and arguably top 5 at his position.

They aren't done. This doesn't mean anything regarding the LT position. Thuney is one of the best guards in the league. There's nothing at all to dislike about this move. |

A sure fire can’t miss LT...there might be only one in this draft & that’s probably in the top 5 picks. |
What’s more likely:
Signing Trent Williams to protect Pats blindside Or Drafting an OT at 31 (or trading up for one) to start right away to protect Pats blindside in an offense that thrives when the QB has time to find the open receivers I will be shocked if Silverback isn’t a Chief when it’s all said and done. |

They’re adding a LT whether it’s Williams, Reiff, Villanueva, or ****ing Peters. If it’s not Williams, I think we take one in the 1st too. |
Thuney’s cap hit this year is $4.5 million.

Clark Hunt writing checks that are breaking necks! Without him signing those big signing bonuses, we wouldn’t have the cap flexibility year in and year out to bring in top talents with minimal initial cap hits. We probably still have come to 30m in cap space, right? |
