KC hadn't really valued guards this way in the past. But when you can win in the middle it makes modern offense deadly.

Really want to see how they finish this off.

There is no way Veach is done. Paying a guard big money and starting a rookie/JAG at left tackle would be stupid. Veach is anything but stupid.

That's why this move doesn't make sense unless there is a LT signed too. For the money, I would have preferred to sign Linsley - almost $20 million cheaper over 5 years and fills a position that we needed more urgently. I like Thuney a lot, but I am really mixed on the move because it is so much money.

tmax63 03-15-2021 03:08 PM

Having a consummate pro next to a rookie LT is about the smartest thing you could do to protect your QB. I'm not advocating for a rookie LT but putting a stud next to him would be a 16mil/yr alternative to a 20-22mil/yr LT especially if the Chiefs have someone they really like in the draft.

BossChief 03-15-2021 03:13 PM

Part of the value Thuney brings is he can play almost any OL position. LG is his best position but he played a lot of tackle last year. It gives us flexibility to keep adding to the OL and not having to worry about the position they are best at.

If we add Silverback, this will have been an elite FA period regardless of what other moves we make.

Another reason this is a critical piece in the next phase of our offense is that it allows Mahomes to actually exist in the pocket for more than 1 second without having to sprint out, scramble, or drop 15-18 yards.

If we can actually develop a pocket, it will limit the effectiveness of the opposing edge-rushers because the angles will be more favorable to our Tackles.

Reid might be stubborn but he's not stupid.

This might be an adaptation to build the OL to Mahomes.

Look at the best Saints teams. They had two of the best guards in the game, and prevented pressure from up the middle. Gave Brees a comfortable pocket. Good guards can affect outside rush, simply by allowing the tackle to ride the rusher over the top while the pocket is clean.

If we had a badass LT as well? Damn

EDIT:

I shouldn't have said best Saints teams, but at least the ones circa 2010, when they had Nicks and Evans at guard

RealSNR 03-15-2021 03:42 PM

If we don't land Williams, at this point I'd rather just draft another OT, see how things go, and experiment with kicking Thuney out to LT for a season. Would be pretty meh on Reiff. I've seen a bunch of Vikings games, and Reiff makes me soft.

"But with a great LG..."

Brian Waters wasn't enough to make Jordan Black not a huge giant piece of shit. Reiff isn't Jordan Black-level bad, but I wouldn't call him a big upgrade from replacement level. He's as meh as it gets, and if I could have Fisher on his old contract or Reiff on a cheaper deal, I'd rather have Fisher. Injury recovery and all.

louie aguiar 03-15-2021 03:42 PM

I’m going ok if we’re overpaying if it means better protecting Mahomes. Now go get a tackle.

In58men 03-15-2021 03:42 PM

Thuney at NC State per (Patriots.com)-Did not allow a sack in 589 snaps during 2015 ACC play from his left tackle spot.

ntexascardfan 03-15-2021 03:43 PM

Give me Sam Cosmi in the first this year.

LT: Cosmi
LG: Thuney
C: Allegretti
RG: LDT
RT: Niang

That's going to get the job done. The left side of the line could be elite in pass pro, especially on play action.

Chris Meck 03-15-2021 03:43 PM

there's nothing surprising about the projected Williams numbers. Thuney was not a consolation prize.

Veach has decided he's sick of bullshit play on the offensive line and is going whole ass on the problem.

Williams is still coming. It'll be shades of Roaf and Waters over there for the next 3-4 years.

The fact that Trent Williams isn't a 49er again right now says a lot, IMO.

Not a guarantee we land him, but they're still swinging for the fences.

If we sign Silverback, Mahomes may not get sacked again.

Hyperbole, but with Niang snd Silverback at the tackles and Thuney at guard and a good center from the draft, he won’t get sacked much by anyone snd Clyde should be able to explode.

Also, we will always have time to run WASP.

There's absolutely no such thing a "sure thing" in the draft.

You NEVER trade up that far for anything other than a QB.

A sure fire can’t miss LT...there might be only one in this draft & that’s probably in the top 5 picks.

BossChief 03-15-2021 04:09 PM

What’s more likely:

Signing Trent Williams to protect Pats blindside

Or

Drafting an OT at 31 (or trading up for one) to start right away to protect Pats blindside in an offense that thrives when the QB has time to find the open receivers

I will be shocked if Silverback isn’t a Chief when it’s all said and done.

If he gets Williams, build him a statue.

Thuney’s cap hit this year is $4.5 million.

Plans on dumping Frank Clark’s salary after the 2021 season.

Yeah Williams has to be their main target with that structure.

Thuney allowed two sacks in 2020, one in 2019 and zero in 2018, per PFF numbers. He also went 16 games in 2019 without being flagged once.

Gotta spread the credit around.

Clark Hunt writing checks that are breaking necks! Without him signing those big signing bonuses, we wouldn’t have the cap flexibility year in and year out to bring in top talents with minimal initial cap hits.

We probably still have come to 30m in cap space, right?
