Randy Sartin – USATODAY Sports
When they completed the trade for Alex Smith, quarterback was no longer a position of need for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2013 NFL Draft. However, with Smith being a one or two year placeholder, it was surprising to see the Chiefs let the draft pass by without taking a quarterback. It was actually after the draft where the Chiefs found a quarterback, signing undrafted free agent Tyler Bray in a move that could work out well for both sides. The Chiefs needed to come out of the draft with a young quarterback that they could start to groom, but taking a quarterback too early in the draft would have meant Smith having to look over his shoulder all season wondering when he was going to get benched for the younger quarterback in a situation reminiscent of what happened to him last year with the San Francisco 49ers. Bray is far too young and raw to overtake Smith for the starting job as a rookie after leaving the Tennessee Volunteers with a year of eligibility left. By signing Bray, the Chiefs will allow Smith to play the 2013 season without having to worry about being replaced, and at the same time they will have a chance to develop arguably the most talented quarterback in this year’s class. Signing with the Chiefs has a chance to be equally fruitful for Bray. Whether it was a mistake for Bray to leave college a year early can be debated (oh, who are we kidding? Of course, it was a mistake), but he walks into the best situation possible in Kansas City. New Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has a history of working with young quarterbacks, and turning them into NFL starters, most notably A.J. Feeley and Kevin Kolb. Reid will have ample opportunity to work with Bray and turn him into a viable NFL quarterback if not more as Bray may be the most talented rookie quarterback Reid has had the chance to work with since he drafted Donovan McNabb in 1999. Bray has a lot of learning and a lot of maturing to do before he’s ready to be an NFL quarterback, but in Kansas City he’ll have plenty of time to do that under the tutelage of Reid who is one of the best in the business when it comes to quarterbacks. As for the Chiefs, they made a low-risk, high-reward move by signing Bray, a player with a high ceiling that won’t make Smith fear for his job, at least not yet. If Bray works hard and takes the opportunity the Chiefs have given him seriously, it’s a move that could work out well for both sides down the road. @tbrayvol8: Leaving a lot of loved ones behind today to start a new journey in my life. Blessed for this opportunity.

Hah, how is Stanzi's twitter going to read?
@rstanzi: Leaving behind a lot of loved ones today to start a new journey in life. **** Tyler Bray. |
So whats the general feeling on Bray? First cut or does he get cut in the final cut to 53? I guess the only other question is he cut for a fullback, tight end, or long snapper?
The only unanswered questions left on Tyler Brays career. |
Wonder if he signed his contract with an "X?"

Stanzi's as good as gone and that's just fine with me.

See ya Stanzi.
|
Wonder how folk's perceptions of the draft would have changed if they took him in Round 3. Heh.

But to your point, drafting Bray would have improved my opinion of the draft. |

I'm not a fan of what the Chiefs gave up for Alex Smith or the idea of tying to him long-term, but the bolded portions just strike me as silly. If Alex Smith is truly the tough-minded great leader and teammate that he is purported to be - and I actually believe he is - then the bolded portions of this are complete non-issues. |
we better get some ****ing picture this weekend of Bray wearing red!

:spock: Yeah, I'm thrilled to see a bunch of dudes that 95 percent will be out of the league in several years.

Jackass. |
well you are dumb enough to invest 16 weeks in watching Alex Smith who wont be a Chief in 2 years so why not watch guys in preseason that will be out of the league
same concept |

i will take the chance on a big arm/10 cent head in today's passing league over a noodle arm/1 million dollar head any day based on potential.

They have tape on him. They know is ceiling. We aren't going to go out and outbid other teams for Bray and then cut him or throw him on the practice squad just for another team to snatch him... They have a plan for him. You're ****ing stupid. |
Quote:
that means he will be playing at 34 years old? Hahahhahahahahahha he's not starting for any NFL team at age 34 |
He's an UDFA lol. What plans to you reckon they have for him?? They've invested Shit into Tattoo Boy as well.

If Alex Smith stinks the joint up, he'll be replaced.
Andy Reid won't stick with him just to try and save face for a mistake like P ioli did with Cassell. If Alex Smith plays great, perhaps he will be here for 5 years, it's possible. |
Reid will expect production from the QB position.

Bray was on his way to Miami and then the Chiefs came knocking and offered him more money. Stanzi is going to have to beat out Bray to continue riding the hype brought on by delusion Iowa fans. Stanzi had a real opportunity to be #2 last year and he got beat out by Brady Quinn, a guy who was far worse than Cassel. Can't move up on the totem pole on the worst QB depth chart in the league? Time to find a new day job. Croyle might be able to hook him up in the real estate business. |
Alex will play for a while, then return to his mentorship role. Just as God intended.

He got beat out. Stanzi homers are hilarious. "He's never got a shot." Then he gets his shot and looks like complete ass. "It's all the lines fault!" Quinn comes in behind the same line a promptly leads a TD drive... |

Tyler Bray @tbrayvol8 6h
Just landed in KC. |

Bray's weapon is the awesome power of Douche. No "Mr. Nice Guy", Bray is a glorious return to the throwback mojo of line-snortin' Marino or whiskey-swillin' Horseface. The kind of QB packing young gun swagger this lilly-white, Sunday social franchise swore it would never sign. Alex Smith will get lippy with Bray at one point in camp. Bray's potential response? To throw the football Eleventy Billion yards down the field to Mexico, look Alice right in his gimpy concussion eye, and tell him, "the Jazzy Scooter is ready anytime YOU are, old ****".
