Steve Spagnuolo.

Oh, we should be so lucky.

He's an interesting choice for sure, Mr. Otter. I looked him up and it's nice that he has experience as an AC both on the defensive side as well as the offensive side of the ball.

He meets my personal criteria for being young ... and the fact that he's been with a winning franchise is good ... plus, he's been a QB coach for one of the best in the business ... and, on top of that, as OC the Pats continued to be known for, not only putting together solid gameplans for their opponents, but making killer adjustments on offense, as well ... I like the idea.

He's probably NE's version of Jason Garrett, they probably will pay him a ton to stay, but i hope not

He's mainly been a defensive guy, which isn't necessarily bad, Mr. lj4mvp. But, he's also about 50 years old ... I'd like to see a younger guy who can grow with the franchise over several years. We've been drafting for the 4/3 which is his scheme, though. That's a consideration, I suppose. I'd put him on the short list, but I'm not sure he's perfect.

I'm convinced that, this time around, our HC needs to be somebody who can put their stamp on the Chiefs for awhile (ala Hank or Marty). Somebody who can get along with Clark, create an identity for this team, and who understands and has proven effective in the modern game. I'm sure Spagnuolo could do the job, but I don't think, of all the possible candidates, he's the perfect choice for us.

I like the Garrett choice except for the fact that he's been an AC on the offensive side of the ball only, so far as I know.

He certainly belongs on the short list, but I'd prefer McDaniels based simply on the fact that he's been in the AFC and worked both sides of the LOS at various times. To me, it's important that our next HC not create an unbalanced team (all offense or all defense) again. Based on his resume, one would think that McDaniels would have a better chance of providing that balance.

My only problem with McDaniels would be he would more than likely bring 3-4 defense, which would make the Dorsey pick not very good.

Good point, Mr. ChiefsCountry. We haven't drafted for the 3/4. Plus, if you think we have a shortage of linebackers now, just wait until we install that defense.

The fact that $ does talk, and if it's a young coach who has been waiting for their time for awhile, they'll jump.

HC positions in the NFL are rare jewels, Mr. Skip Towne. Most, if not all, of these guys would take the job, if offered. I agree, though, that it would be easier to hire a good man if Carl were no longer GM. I have no doubt that Carl's reputation isn't exactly stellar among NFL coaching professionals whose primary focus is winning championships.

I don't understand the infatuation with Cowher, I guess.

He was a good DC for us and long-tenured with the Steelers, but it took him a very long time to make it all the way and, even though they did it the hard way, it could be argued that he had some official assistance on the way to his SuperBowl ring.

Why all the love for him, mewonders?

Probably his hard nosed attitude more than anything else.

Little Bigfoot 09-19-2008 11:58 AM

Aside from Mike Martz. Please , no has beens. The candidate should be offense minded and if a former HC is considered, should have a ring.

Offense doesn't win championships, son. I will take a defensive mind every day of the week.

Dylan 09-19-2008 01:02 PM

If the Giants defense plays well this year Steve Spagnuolo will be top head coach choice at the end of the season. J/M/O. Winning a Super Bowl and keeping a defense together that lost two major players to their success in 2007 will do that for him. But it really depends on Mike Waufle, Defensive Line Coach and if his line doesn’t miss a beat.

Mike Waufle has always been singled out by the players on the line, and that includes Strahan for being so successful. The players credit Waufle for teaching them their skills on how to be extremely aggressive.

I'm mostly sure Wauffle will be the Giants next defensive coordinator. Hate to lose Spags. Steve's defensive game planning as his ability to adjust during the game is amazing. But Waufle is no slouch.

Here's Waufle's resume: http://www.giants.com/team/coach.asp?coach_id=14

8. Chiefs @ Falcons

The Big Question: Has Herm Edwards lost his mind?

When teammates talk about a young quarterback, they will often say how impressed they are with the kid's command of the huddle. Joe Flacco's poise, Chad Henne's presence, yada yada yada. We didn't hear any of those quotes coming out of Kansas City last week.

It became clear early in the offseason that Herm wanted Tyler Thigpen to get some action this season, but why does it have to be so early? To watch Thigpen play against the Raiders is to appreciate just how difficult it is to be a quarterback in the NFL. Passes weren't close his receivers. Occasionally it was tough to figure out who the intended receiver was. Thigpen vs. Russell was the single worst quarterbacking display I've ever seen. Imagine what Tony Gonzalez and Brian Waters are thinking in the huddle. Probably about their dinner plans.

This should be the matchup where Larry Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, and Gonzo get off. L.J.'s whining certainly won't hurt his chances of getting 20 touches. But the Falcons defense has looked surprisingly average thus far, and Thigpen casts a dirty cloud of the whole team. L.J. is a borderline RB2, and Bowe is a much better option if you start three receivers.

Somewhere in the middle

The Falcons running game isn't as good as it looked in Week 1, and it's not as bad as it looked in Week 2. The truth is somewhere in the middle, but my guess is it's closer to the disaster at Tampa. This is a rare game where the Falcons will be favored, though, and hopefully playing from ahead. Use Michael Turner as a RB2.

I just can't understand how anyone think that Marty is qualified to GM.

He is, overall, a suckass talent evaluator, and as GM, he would be responsible for evaluating and acquiring talent.

You people must really love Martyocrity.
