Good. He's literally one of the best players on the team and one of the best interior linemen in the league

There is a reason he is one of the most wanted free agents. Worth every penny.

Deberg_1990 02-27-2025 01:35 PM

He’s 52-16 as a starter. You don’t let franchise guards get away.

I don’t know… we need OL. I feel like guard is a position we can get great value in the draft. Too risky to do this year but we should have had a guy waiting in the wings so we don’t need to pay Trey if we don’t need to. This is one I’m not as crazy about. I like Trey but that’s bonkers how much money we have tied up to our interior OL.

I honestly think they'll have a deal done by free agency. I also don't understand how anyone can be so upset about this team retaining their home grown, elite talent. If they want Trey Smith here, then he should be.

Yep. They've thought about it and have a plan.

I think some people are forgetting that Joe Thuney is 33 years old.

redfan 02-27-2025 01:38 PM

He's really gonna play on the tag? I doubt that.

el borracho 02-27-2025 01:38 PM

Anyone want to throw out hypothetical trade scenarios? Potential trade partners and potential trade value?

Hell, I said it before, but it's entirely possible that Thuney is considering retirement.

Thuney will be extended.

But they don't, so they feel that they need to go with the costly sure thing.

You really want to trust a guy that's only won 3 SB's in the last 6 years? I dunno...

spanky 52 02-27-2025 01:41 PM

Any chance Thuney is retiring?

chiefzilla1501 02-27-2025 01:45 PM

A one year deal isn’t the worst thing as I’d love to see if we can find a way to address Guard some other much cheaper way. Get a year out of Trey and buy time to find some young talent at the position. If the extra year helps us save long term cash it’s worth it

pugsnotdrugs19 02-27-2025 01:48 PM

There's articles out there right now from teams who were hoping to land Smith that are uh... less than pleased.

Draftubators lost

ForeverIowan 02-27-2025 01:49 PM

Great news! You dont just let a 25 year old franchise guard who is entering his prime walk in free agency for nothing in return. Either you tag and trade or you figure out the cap and have an all pro caliber left guard back to protect Mahomes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs are gearing to get in the top 15 in the draft for their franchise LT. If they are indeed planning to keep Trey, you need to be cheap at left tackle. Stop the musical chairs, give up a future 1st rounder and go get your damn franchise left tackle.
