OTOH, I'm not an Oscars hater, but it historically spends an inordinate amount of time telling itself how important every thing it does is for society.

You would be surprised the contingent of those in there who feel that America wasn't ready for a black president until the Oscars were ready for black Oscar winners, and so on.
