That 3 second burn was pretty intense.

Back for satellite deploy. Should be interesting.

I...don't know what to think about that. They just kind of float off in a big blob. ROFL

And their off... Well that was a bit anticlimactic.. :D

Misplaced_Chiefs_Fan 05-23-2019 09:39 PM

Yeah, I was sorta expecting them to "launch" them like torpedoes or something. Just giving them a push and saying "fly free" wasn't what I was imagining.

Prison Bitch 05-23-2019 09:47 PM

Awesome

Btw you can rewind the live feed if you missed launch. That’s what I did

DaFace 05-23-2019 09:50 PM

For those who didn't catch it live.

My son has been working with NASA in Goddard, Maryland and is currently on a program to replace the Hubble Telescope. He mentioned last week that it's so overbudget it might get scrapped that NASA has a bunch of programs running right now and the President is allocating more money to NASA than the past regime.

I personally, would like to see another manned mission to the moon 50 years on. if they're serious about Mars, they gotta re-do the runs the to moon, at least.

Oohh...is he working on the JWST? That's super cool if so (and still super cool if it's something different). It is indeed way over budget, but I can't imagine it being totally scrapped. Hubble has arguably been the most fruitful scientific instrument ever created in terms of expanding our knowledge of the universe, and we need a replacement for it sooner than later.

As for moon missions, they're definitely coming. I'm still a little skeptical that NASA will get there with SLS, but there are enough entities working on it these days that someone will get there in the next 5-10 years.

Less than 24 hours till next spacex launch bump. Will be a F9 launch for this one, but another falcon heavy is coming in 12 days.

Looks like we confirmed that the visibility near ground level can be absolute crap and everything go off without a hitch anyway. I would say it was another cool launch/landing, but I sure couldn't see anything to confirm it :)

Going down too. I had always been under the impression that it had to go with visual guidance in the final seconds to hit the bullseye, but I sure couldn't see the target until it was practically on the ground. Clearly their GPS systems are pretty precise.

Yes, we needed a twist to the most awesome people's standard cast where, well. it's usually perfect. The fog was COOL!

24-hour bump for Falcon Heavy. I'm stoked for the night time launch (and landing). Seeing two boosters coming down side-by-side in the dark is gonna be fun. Window opens at 11:30pm Eastern tomorrow night (Monday).

ChiliConCarnage 06-24-2019 09:49 AM

Quote:

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket will attempt its most technically demanding mission yet on Monday night, with a rideshare flight organized by the US Air Force. Company founder Elon Musk has characterized the mission as "Our most difficult launch ever."

During this Space Test Program-2 flight, the world's most powerful operational rocket will attempt to deliver 24 different payloads into three different orbits, resulting in multiple re-lights of the Merlin 1D engine powering the rocket's second stage.
Further Reading
This may be the moment SpaceX opened the cosmos to the masses

It is a critical mission for SpaceX and its Falcon Heavy rocket for a few reasons. First of all, this is the first time the Air Force has flown payloads on a Falcon Heavy rocket. And while this mission will not be carrying anything critical to national security—such as large satellites valued at $1 billion or more used for observation, communication, or other purposes to advance the national interest—Air Force officials will be watching closely.

The US military is in the middle of determining which providers among SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, Blue Origin, and Northrop Grumman will win lucrative launch contracts from 2022 to 2026. The Air Force is only expected to pick two winners, and SpaceX has said its Falcon Heavy rocket can meet all nine of the Air Force's "reference orbits," which means sending heavy payloads to some exotic orbits that require a lot of energy to reach.

DaFace 06-24-2019 10:03 AM

Wow. I hadn't really paid attention to how complex this mission is. Here's the timeline from the press kit:

Code:

00:00:42 Max Q (moment of peak mechanical stress on the rocket)
00:02:27 Booster engine cutoff (BECO)
00:02:31 Side boosters separate from center core
00:02:49 Side boosters begin boostback burn
00:03:27 Center core engine shutdown/main engine cutoff (MECO)
00:03:31 Center core and 2nd stage separate
00:03:38 2nd stage engine starts (SES-1)
00:04:03 Fairing deployment
00:07:13 Side boosters begin entry burn
00:08:41 Side booster landings
00:08:38 2nd stage engine cutoff (SECO-1)
00:08:53 Center core begins entry burn
00:11:21 Center core landing
00:12:55 Spacecraft deployments begin
01:12:39 Second stage engine restart (SES-2)
01:13:00 Second stage engine cutoff (SECO-2)
02:07:35 Second stage engine restart (SES-3)
02:08:04 Second stage engine cutoff (SECO-3)
03:27:27 Second stage engine restart (SES-4)
03:28:03 Second stage engine cutoff (SECO-4)
03:34:09 Final spacecraft deployment

Combined with a 4-hour window, this could make for a late night. I might try and make it to SECO-2 if they get it off on time, but that'll probably be it for me.

mlyonsd 06-24-2019 08:17 PM

PBS is airing a Summer of Space lineup that includes several different programs tied into Apollo 11. The one I'm looking forward to the most is a 6 hour documentary/movie called Chasing the Moon starting July 8th. It's made by the American Experience folks.

https://www.pbs.org/about/blogs/news...-space-lineup/

I was 9 at the time and everyone was glued to their tv sets.

Yeah, that was weird. The long-range camera made it look like something really wonky happened, but the on-board cameras seemed pretty normal. I'll be curious to see if there's an explanation.

Yeah, if you look at it carefully, it fully-on tilts horizontal at the last second and pushes itself away from the drone ship. Wonder if that was a planned abort sequence to save the ship or if something went wrong with the landing sequence itself.

Regarding the failed landing of the center core:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">High entry force &amp; heat breached engine bay &amp; center engine TVC failed</p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1143690145255841797?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 26, 2019</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

In a follow-up, he says that the booster most likely aborted at the last second to save the ship. So we may have found the edge of what is really possible for the FH center core recovery.

DaFace 06-26-2019 08:46 PM

Hey, I actually have some non-SpaceX news to report in this thread! Boeing is gonna test their abort system in a week.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Got plans Tuesday, July 2? We&#39;re testing <a href="https://twitter.com/NASA_Orion?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@NASA_Orion</a>&#39;s launch abort system to verify that the crew capsule can be steered to safety if necessary. Watch the test flight that will help pave the way for <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Artemis?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Artemis</a> missions to the Moon and then to Mars: <a href="https://t.co/eoXd5kXhG7">https://t.co/eoXd5kXhG7</a> <a href="https://t.co/uxFhQQulsv">pic.twitter.com/uxFhQQulsv</a></p>&mdash; NASA (@NASA) <a href="https://twitter.com/NASA/status/1143915980080500737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 26, 2019</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

It'll be broadcast starting at 7am EST next Tuesday (7/2) if anyone is interested. Hopefully all goes well - I'd love to see a manned launch this year regardless of whether Boeing or SpaceX gets there first.

"The United Nations fears that the possibility of an asteroid smashing into a densely populated area isn’t being taken seriously enough, so it designated June 30 as International Asteroid Day to raise awareness about the potentially catastrophic occurrence."

Yet I don't read about it until after the fact. Hope they didn't spend much on the campaign.

Pretty cool. It's amazing that things like this were nothing more than science fiction not too long ago.

I was 9 at the time and everyone was glued to their tv sets.

Bump. This starts tonight on PBS 8pm CT. Three part series. New footage, etc.

Cool, thanks for the bump. Hopefully it'll show up on PBS streaming (since I don't even bother with an antenna these days, and PBS isn't on Hulu).

SpaceX’s ‘Starhopper’ bursts into flames during static fire test

SpaceX’s test vehicle, a small-scale demonstration craft for some Starship components, caught fire after what appears to be a fuel leak or dump following an otherwise successful static fire test last night. It’s not clear why the craft suddenly burst into flames, or whether it was seriously or even superficially damaged.

The “Starhopper,” as SpaceX has been calling it, is a much smaller-scale version of the Starship craft the company has in development, meant to test them out in a live-fire environment and even perform short flights called hops — hence the name. It’s being assembled and operated at SpaceX’s facilities in Boca Chica, Texas.

Yeah, that looked pretty intense. Thankfully, seems like the damage was relatively light, though.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Regarding Starhopper in South Texas, hearing from multiple sources that the &quot;fireball&quot; during Tuesday night&#39;s test caused no significant damage. Launch attempt today at 6:53pm EST. (I say attempt because weather is pretty iffy.)

No landing on this one. Poor little booster has flown twice before, but now it's time to burn up.

SpaceX is still on for tonight at the moment, though they're delaying 30 minutes for rain. In other news, Rocketlab is going to try and reuse their first stage, so that's cool! Much smaller rocket, but still.
