I enjoyed two movies recently both are based off actual things that happened.

The Walk and The 33, I kick myself for not watching the first one on the big screen, I read it is incredible to view.

Damn, I forgot about The Walk. Wanted to see that, looked visually appealing.

I'm thinking about watching Tarzan and The Shallows today. Needless to say, I'm very bored.

There's nothing in the trailer that makes me want to watch it at all.

It's out on video, and it's not a blockbuster or serious art piece.

But if you want an hour and a half of sophomoric glee, I thoroughly enjoyed 'What We Do in the Shadows.'

It's a mockumentary of some vampires who ended up sharing a loft in New Zealand.

Think if The Real World, Spinal Tap, and Flight of the Conchords got all mixed together on a budget.

Tarzan was poor in my opinion.
I suppose it is hard in this day in age to even tell the story of Tarzan and be politically correct. Try they did though by making Tarzan an abolitionist hero with an African-American sidekick. The whole movie was dripping with trying to make a "New Tarzan Franchise" that would be acceptable to the masses and not offend.
Sorry, but that is not the story of Tarzan.
I think the time has passed on this on this whole story line and perhaps they should never attempt to make a Tarzan movie again.

The Purge: Election Year wasn't bad for some mindless fun.

Those movies are getting weirder and weirder though.

I laughed so much at this movie. Saw it at an art house theater with a bunch of old Pasadena art patron types who really didn't get it at all. I still give them credit for showing up and trying new things. They keep that theater in business and with nice low prices because it is always quite full for nearly every screening. I was pretty much laughing alone in a full theater though. I loved it.

Me too. I liked it ok, it's Kiwi or New Zealand folk IIRC

-King- 07-08-2016 08:10 PM

Purge was ok. 2 hrs of mindless action. Don't mind it.

Tarzan was pretty bad. Bad acting, bad story, bad special effects.

Finding Dory was great. Not as funny as Finding Nemo, but more emotional and meaningful.

Remember the Stephen King book Cell? Well, they apparently made a movie of it with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson starring in it. Sounds promising, right? It's sitting at 0% at Rotten Tomatoes. I don't think I've ever seen a movie at 0% before.

I read the book and it was ok, up until then end. Like most King books.

I think I read that one thinking it might be your typical zombie type read and it got weird as hell, quickly.

IIRC, the undead zombie antagonist dudes ended up being hive-minded with telepathic powers and shit. And I feel like I remember something about them floating or hovering on thin air.

Just bad..

Fooled ya! I'm actually kind of an asshole.

Stuff I've recently watched:

The Shallows (2016)

Not much plot, or character development. Chick gets attacked by shark, clings to small rock near shore for survival, tries to find a way to get to shore. That's it. Watchable, but nothing new or exiting. I'd wait to catch it on tv.

Some Rifftrax stuff:

The Wizard (1989)
Miami Connection
I Believe in Santa Claus
Icebreaker
Wizards of the Lost Kingdom
Hillbillys in a Haunted House
Sharknado 2
The Night of the Living Dead

I'm about to watch an old French flick called "Un Coupable."

wow, I kind of glossed over this and thought you were talking about the old JLo movie. SK even wrote the screenplay, so I guess that means no one else can be blamed for it sucking.

On a related note, I watched Horns over the weekend, based on Joe Hill's(King's) book of the same name. It was a decent time waster.

No, he's not. King's movies mostly blow and I'd guess he's a .250 hitter regarding his books. The ones that are 'good' are great. The rest are overlong, tired, and forgettable.

I agree, his bad movies are real shit stains. I mean, the movie/book for The Mangler is one of the biggest pieces of shit movies I have ever seen. But the year before, The Stand was tremendous. It goes on and on with him... Christine, GREAT movie, the next year, Firestarter total crap.

well, typically a screenwriter adapts the book for the movie, but in this case, King aparently screenwrote it too. So there goes blaming the screenwriter.

Anyhow, SK definitely cannot write a good ending for the most part. But he has some great ideas, as does his son.

The movie It was so freaking good until the end. The ending was awful and ruined the entire film.

As far as his books, a previous poster nailed it. His good stories are gems, but for the most part he puts out overwritten trash.

Damn, I hate to be that one-upping douche but our library system will deliver the shit to your house for the free! Yes, free.99.

It's an awesome service that a large percentage of the population doesn't even know about, which is probably a good thing because if everyone knew they'd probably overload the system.

It's kinda risky for me living in apartments though. I had the fourth Game of Thrones book delivered to my house once and no one was home so they legit just left it right at the base of the door. In an apartment that shit could get snatched up so quick.

I mean, it's something from the library that literally anyone can have for free so I wouldn't think people would be apt to steal it, but people are weird and shady. I wouldn't put it past them.

That's why we can't have nice things. They say we're allowed to check out 101 items at once here. I try and be courteous, only withdrawing 10 books/movies at a time and I won't request home delivery unless it's at a library on the other side of town.

I'd imagine most people don't give two shits, though. Some of the items I check out just look like they've been through hell. I can't tell you how many times I've checked out a movie only to get home and find that the disc is so scratched up my DVD player can't play it. Inconsiderate assholes. It's gotten to the point where i check the disc before even leaving the library to save myself the annoyance.

Yeah, I thought so too. Difficult to understand the dialogue at times as well. It was like eating a huge bowl of plain oatmeal- it gets boring fast, and you get full of it after a few bites.

totally agree with afore mentioned - his shorts are the best. but always always the book will outshine a movie. as for the shorts...so many come to mind....but the one that always stuck with me (from Skeleton Crew) cause it just scared the shit out of me....Gramma.

He is the best thing about it. It's a shame really. Waste of a good Tarzan in a boring movie. It isn't horrible, but it is pretty pedestrian.
