We’ve got 16 cats and 4 dogs currently but at one point had 21 cats. We were providing overflow of sorts for the ARL, which is unfortunately now closed. We also ended up with a couple of turtles and some birds from that deal too. |

Gotta take Dodger to the vet in the morning. He's got a aural hematoma the vet's going to operate on. His ear flap is blown up like a little balloon (with blood) instead of being flat.
I've had dogs my entire life and have never run across this before. Anyone else had this happen? If so what did you have to do to get it fixed? Oh yea, wish Dodger some good luck. The vet said this could be fixed with this surgery or it could turn into a continual problem. Oh yea, it's the "flap down" left ear in his pic.:D |
Quote:
None of my dogs have had it before but I went and looked it up. Looks painful for him. :( Apparently they are gonna do quilt style stitching on his ear to keep it from filling up like a balloon again. https://www.facebook.com/Noahs.ark.a...6048494120095/ |
Quote:
No, he's never had any anesthesia but he's only 8 yrs old and healthy so hopefully it won't be a problem. I feel sorry for him. Not only does he have to have surgery but he's gotta wear "The Cone of Shame" for a month or so.:D I'm hoping it's not that long. He's a pretty smart dog and I tell him not to do something like scratch his ear he listens to me. |
I sure hope Louie doesn't ever get this. He'd look like he had an apple for an ear.ROFL

This is one of my babies. Her name is Frankie Jo (but we usually call her JoJo) she's 8 years old Pug. Her older sister passed away late last year, she was also a Pug named Daisy May (who we called May May). We also have a 15 year old long haired Chihuahua named Bear (who we of course call Bear Bear) & a almost year old Golden Doodle named Bella, but we call her Roo Roo because of the sound she makes when I get home from work at night, it sounds like she's yelling Roo Roo!! Sorry I have no pics of the other 3 available. We did have a ton of cats too before my wife got sick, we had to find them other homes after that. But I can tell you all their names if you want. |

I have an Australian Cattle Dog too. Any idea what he is mixed with? |
Quote:
My reasoning for this is that at 6 months he is 22 inches tall and now weight nearly 50lbs. That is a huge full grown male heeler as the males get up to 20 inches and 50lbs. He doesn't have the floppy ears but his ears are huge like the coonhound and perky like the Kelpie. He has bawl-mouth in that he doesn't bark at things as much as he screams at them. Lastly... he has cow patches all over his body like the coonhound. I'm gonna have to get a doggie DNA kit for him because he has me thoroughly perplexed as to his heritage. https://i.imgur.com/OiuAZJ7.jpg |

There is a lot of genetic variability in the line because they were made to work, not made to be pretty or whatthe****ever. Everything but the face looks ACD. But I’m also an idiot. |

https://i.imgur.com/Hbe659c.jpg This is his momma... no clue what daddy is as he was a rescue and she was a stray. https://i.imgur.com/NATZVmt.jpg I found a site powered by Microsoft where you can plug in a photo of your dog and it uses AI to tell you what the dog is. It said that momma is a Kelpie. https://www.what-dog.net/ When I plug Louie in... it tells me Bluetick Coonhound which is what first lead me to looking up that breed. /Louie as in Louie Prima. My first Heeler was Keely... as in Louie's wife Keely Smith. |
Cool link, MJ. It confirmed my suspicions about Dodger.
Tried a few different photos and they came back as Karelian Bear Dog three times and Border Collie twice. Which is exactly what I thought he was. |
Quote:
I've never heard of a Karelian Bear Dog before... that is crazy a dog that size going after bear! Also cool to know is that they are apparently an ancient breed of dog that have been found to have been buried with Vikings back in the day. I ****ing love dogs! ---- Ok, one last post about Louie and the fosters... until the next one. Louie is only 6 months old, thus still a puppy himself. It cracks me up to see him watching the two 6 week old foster pups playfighting and he lumbers over to join in the revelry like: https://i.imgur.com/CV3EHPt.png But my dude is so gentle with them... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/c77OgmKLk5s" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

You'll have to forgive the diapers - two of them we got when they were 9 and 11 respectively and they had never been house trained. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. |

They are adorable! What lead you to taking on, mostly, hairless dogs? |

We had him for a couple of years when the ARL got in the two pictured. The truly hairless ones require a great deal of care - they sunburn, they freeze, etc. You have to clothe them. You have to lotion them so their skin doesn't get too dry because they don't have the same oil glands that a regular dog has. Plus these two were geriatric, not house trained, in need of a monthly prescription bill that would make your grandma blush, and so on. The ARL listed them and instantly had more interested than any dogs in the history of the shelter and they panicked. They didn't want to send special needs dogs home to just anyone, let along dogs that most people only want for the "novelty". They knew we had experience with the breed, so they asked us if we would take them. Here's a pic of all 3 of them together - the powder puff, Kuku, is on the left. Yes, all three of them are the same breed. :) |

I almost forgot. As far as interesante pets, I also have this little lady...

You have quite the menagerie! A parrot as well IIRC, right? Dude... your budget must be stacked towards the care of animals! |
Quote:
Right now, we have 4 dogs, 16 or 17 cats (hard to keep track of, we did have 21 but lost a couple of the outdoor kittens over the summer), 2 cockatiels, a Russian tortoise, a red-eared slider (turtle), the axolotl, a 15G indoor fish tank, 11 layer chickens, and 4 ducks. The real tragedy is that I had a 1500G show-quality koi pond with several fish two decades old and over 25 pounds that died during the extended power outage after the derecho. They were kind of family heirlooms, purchased by my late father-in-law and we were crushed to lose them. 12 fish, close to 300 pounds total, and will cost us over $10K to replace like for like (obviously not ever going to happen). |
As far as budget, the 2 elderly hairless dogs have monthly meds totaling more than me, my wife, and my 2 kids combined. :)

This is Teddy. We have another animal in our house because my wife is weak and I am weaker. At least cats are 10x easier than dogs. Look how cute this little ****er is though.

Mama Cat Tina loves getting up in an open window and watching the birds and squirrels in the yard. She makes a little chattering sound when she sees a squirrel. She's such a good girl.

Wade Davis got bit by something in his nether region. Antibiotics and cone of shame for 2 weeks. Should go over smashingly.

I used to have full bred German Shepherds, which are amazing animals, but we went with the rescue route and got these two mutts, and I have to say they are pretty awesome dogs.

My kittens Tony and Otis saw snow for the first time yesterday. They sat up in the kitty window in the kitchen and watched it come down for hours mesmerized.
