this was just a sloppy game on both sides of the ball, useless to blame coaches today

I have said repeatedly that in 3 years spags has not costed us a season. For all the ups and downs they have yet to let us down in a playoff loss. We followed up a embarrassing stretch in 2019 with a dominant playoff run on defense. We had a solid showing in 2020. We had an embarrassing game on defense vs Cincy followed by a playoff game where our defense actually played burrow reasonably well.

We've had plenty of bad stretches on defense but have generally been good when we get to the playoffs. I'm plenty uncomfortable with our defense right now but yeah, until he actually costs us a playoff game he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Our offense, not our defense, by a mile are the biggest reasons for our recent playoff exits

How many games have been sloppy all year? I swear every singles week we’re hearing about how KC shot themselves in the foot with self inflicted wounds and stupid mistakes. Kind of seems like that’s who this team is. They aren’t disciplined and make dumb errors all the time. Yes they’re still 10-3, but come playoff time all it takes is one or two mistakes at the wrong time to end your season. KC at their best can beat anyone, but rarely do we we ever see them at their best.

Um, and I want to say right off the bat that I was pretty annoyed with the defense today, enough that a couple drives I just walked outside when we were on defense in the second half. But the numbers say the defense played pretty well. I mean, DEN punted 7 times.

Anyway, here's the boxscore, see for yourself:

The defense did not have a good game at all but I wonder how it would have looked had there not been 3 INTs giving the Broncos shorter fields.

Kman34 12-11-2022 09:59 PM

They were fine.. Offense had 3 turnovers for christ sake.

DEN only had three drives that went for 60 yards or more. Per drive, it looks like their average yards gained was about 20. Give or take a couple yards. probably subtract two TDs if we don't gift them short fields.

If that’s the case the narrative on how the defense played today might need adjusting some.

That was clear last week. You could see Spags trying to adjust to the Bengals last week by going from man to zone and the defense actually looked worse. Boyd just kept finding the holes in the zone and picking us apart 10 yards at a time. It's a real concern. Really need the pass rush to step up because if the DBs are getting beat in man the backup plan isn't great.

You can check for yourself. I posted the ESPN boxscore link a few posts above. You can click on the play-byplay button and count the drives, total yards, etc. The Team stats button shows that the defense went 6-17 against DN on 3rd down. Statistically, the defense did their job.

Oh I don’t doubt you.

It was an invitation, bud. I freely admit i was pissed about the defense while i was watching the game. It wasn't until I read a post in a different thread that i even thought about checking the boxscore and the team stats. I'll have to go back and find that post so I can give that guy credit. It was Denverchief. he posted a stat-line about how nearly 400 yds of offense was generated by 3 guys that weren't regular starters. And i just thought, what did the defense do statistically?

anyway, please check it out. I know stats don't tell the whole story, but still. The defense didn't have the horrific day it felt like superficially. They actually were pretty good, outside of a few weird bounces and missed assignments. Takeaway just a couple plays, and the defense held them to just 59 yards rushing and under 200 passing if not for that one long pass.

They've been sloppy for a good part of the season. If not the coaches, who do you blame for that?

That’s not bad. I guess looking at it from a 50,000 ft view makes it look better than what it seemed watching it.

RunKC 12-11-2022 10:42 PM

9/13 possessions were no points
4.6 yards per play
2 INT’s
1 defensive TD
7 passes defended
6 sacks
11 QB hits

If I were to tell you before any game that our defense did this would you say they gave up 28 points or that they would have any chance of losing?

Just wild to me
