ALL of it comes gradually at once. Mahomes knows the entire playbook. He'll know it BETTER next year. And the year after that he'll know it even BETTER, all until he's "proficient" in the eyes of Reid.

This is exactly how Reid has described this shit for years, going all the way back to when we traded for Alex Smith.

Have you ever played football? High school? College? It's pretty common to learn stuff this way.

The playbook is maybe half of the issue with why don't play a new QB immediately. The other half is the ability to read a defense from behind the center and intuitively command an offense from the field.

No amount of flashcards and All-22 still shots are going to help the latter part of any QB's game.

Very nice of him to purchase airfare for the fan base, but I have no interest in watching Brady play in another 'ship.

Do you see a running theme here?

It may take 3 years to "master" the entire playbook. But that doesn't exclude anybody from being ready to play.

I never said anything about sitting Mahomes for 3 years...This was about the chodes on here acting like he's ready to start THIS year. The dude can barely run a huddle...

I heard something about him yelling the plays so loud in the huddle the defenses could hear. Did he fix that problem?

GOD ****ING DAMN AND IDIOT.

IF HE IS THE BACKUP THEN HE BETTER BE GOD DAMNED ****ING READY BECAUSE IT WILL BE HIS JOB TO GO IN AT ANY POINT IN ANY GAME.

THAT IS THE JOB OF A BACKUP IS TO BE READY

HE MAY HAVE TO START THE VERY NEXT WEEK.

He have an internet shouter on our hands...Does it make you feel more correct when the words are bigger? Bray will be #2 for awhile...for the very reasons you "shouted", he's been here 4 years. He's not a better QB but actually knows what's going on.

I know, but BlackOp has this obsession with OMG PHONE BOOK SIZED PLAYBOOK TOO MUCH HE ONLY READS THE FIRST 1/20TH UNTIL HE GETS IT ALL.

That's why I'm talking specifically about the playbook.

Have you seen him practice? ROFLROFLROFLROFL

He is more likely going get our guys clobbered on errant throws and you expect him to be backup ok. Get our receivers killed.

Patrick was head and shoulders above Bray yesterday man.

No..he was reinforcing what I was saying... understanding the WHY of the plays and the intention of every component of it.

Knowing the basic formation wasn't what I was talking about..it was how to USE that formation in specific situations.

Want to make a wager..opening day #2 QB?

Rasputin 08-05-2017 10:31 PM

Tyler Bray has been a third string backup and hasn't got one play regular season on his resume. They only gave him #2 because he has been here longer but he sure hasn't earned it beating anyone out.

With Reid's offense, I'm not sure it's the size of the playbook even as much as getting the playcalls right. With Reid, Gruden, etc... there are plenty of articles and videos out there talking about that challenge. You have these 15 word playcalls... and if they have to call multiple plays in the huddle that's a whole other challenge. The QB has to be completely on top of it or the whole tempo of the offense is ruined.

He may beat him out later in the year...opening day, no.

It's a win/win for me..if Reid thinks he can handle the #2 as a rookie...that's fantastic.

I'm on the same page. Even I think week one is too soon but I'd rather the team scour other teams heap to replace Tyler Bray if they can find someone. Really they should have kept Foles even if he sucks he can get this team by a few games.

I'm excited for Patrick to get to play this season but I want him ready. Week one against the Pats I'd sit him with no temptation of putting him in but pray Alex doesn't get hurt but then again I feel strongly about Patrick being able beat out Tyler Bray.

It's thin ice what to do. I mean you can't have a winner and then say no you're not going suit up and lie about winning the backup.

I think Patrick can handle it better than Bray regardless but I'm not wanting him in that first game. Ideal late in the season depending on how our season is going with Alex Smith.

So much football has yet to be played and determine what is for the best.

Chiefs AND Reid have an axe to grind...you better believe he has been putting something together based off that play-off loss for months. He's had all Spring/Summer...

Even if they lose...the idea of opening the entire season in front of million vs. the SB champs will make their TC more focused than usual...how could it not?

It's been brought up everyday...

I want the so called "pundits" to say Brady is done again after we embarrassed him last time.

I expect an emphasis on Kelce and Hill. I'm not worried about the D unless a major injury happens.

I think Patrick Mahomes II can handle the #2 as a rookie but the first game is the one that would scare me the most. I just want Alex to play his best and we stay healthy as a team win or lose.

Damon Huard was a career 3rd stringer until he came to Kansas City and took over for Trent Green when he went down.

BTW Smitty holds some NFL Records...

First quarterback to lead two lead changing drives in the final 2 minutes (2011 divisional playoffs versus Saints)

Most consecutive passes in the Playoffs without an Interception (119)

Perfect game (158.3 QBR) vs Raiders Week 15 2013

Most consecutive passes without an interception: 312 (Week 3–Week 14, 2015) 2nd all-time in NFL history

When did it become fashionable to only root for one KC QB to succeed? I want Smith to kick ass this year...and want Mahomes to kick-ass when the coaches think he's ready...

Picking sides is just some dumb-ass, junior high thing that was invented on CP...by some dumb-ass fans with no lives.

It's gotten so ****ed-up they actually want Smith to fail/get hurt...just to potentially feel about right about something for the first time in their existence. If they are wrong...they will just start the same shit towards Mahomes.

I'm enjoying KC beating the piss out of our rivals...getting 6 national games and going 12-4.

It is truly funny to see both from an outside perspective. You say, why can't we do both," but you entrench yourself into the Smith section the moment you say they.

Both sides are presenting legit perspectives, but it seems as if both sides are tired of the other, so they need to ramp up their "camp" to be justified in their stance.

Whatever; keep on keepin' on. Just found it odd that penbrook became such an Alex fan seemingly overnight, which I truly don't believe happened. I just think he has gotten himself so invested in his stance, that he feels obligated to continue to double down on it, which is only ingniting the issues as opposed to extinguishing it, as he most likely, previously, had hoped.

Smith has won a lot games since coming to KC...Mahomes hasn't done anything yet...I'm pragmatic. My opinion isn't based on projecting "hopes and dreams" onto something as frivolous as football. When he wins at this level...I'll trust him.

The rest is just horseshit...he looks good throwing bombs though as does Bray.

Mahomes looks better than I thought he would at this point...which is great.

At this point in training camp, I think it is standard operating procedure, especially when you already have an established QB. We aren't the Browns drafting a QB, although I think Kizer may be 3rd string there right now. With a good starting QB in Alex Smith already here, we really are bucking a number of trends already.

Chiefs Moon 08-06-2017 05:12 AM

As for understanding everything about the playbook and defenses, Favre/Detmer conversation comes to mind:

[Farve] said ‘Ty, I gotta ask you a question.’ And Ty was just about as goofy as I was.

He says, ‘What’s that?’

And I say, ‘What’s nickel defense?’

He gets real quiet. He says, ‘Are you serious?’

I said ‘Yeah, I’m serious.”

He says, ‘Well, they basically take out a linebacker and bring in a DB.’

I said, ‘That’s it?’

He said, ‘Thats it!’

I said, ‘Who gives a [expletive]?’

I wonder about that Kizer situation. I think a lot of people sell Cody Kessler short...the kid had moments where he looked fantastic last year.

I can't remember who Kizer is behind. I looked at it yesterday and yeah, he was #3, I think...ahead of Hogan at number 4. Kessler is #1...can't remember who #2 is.

Oh wait, Osweiler!!!

Yeah, that's all gonna change.

This chick had a framed picture of Tyreek she got at the merchandise tent and she was screaming TYREEEEEEEK TYRREEEEEK for him to come over and get it autographed. He never came over but had he did she would have gushed.

What's the story with Justin Houston so far? Is he on the field and dominating? Is he being wheeled around like Stephen Hawking? Somewhere in between? I've reached the point where I would believe any answer in this spectrum.

I would have gushed if I got that one

Really that would have been cool.

We only had three DB come by and Eric Murray was the only one I knew the other guys were scrubs but they wanted to feel important and celebrity like so I let them sign my leather old school helmet even though it really didn't matter.

I think Eric Murray is having a good camp seems like a cool dude.

I saw him the other day when they had the hitting padded machine and he made one of the other guys get out of the way it was his turn. "hey hey hey I got this" more or less get out of the way rook. Just like watching drills on Hard Knocks

His knees looked fine to me and then they did a donut tackling drill and clobbered a giant foam donut. DJ had the best form to knock that donut on it's asshole

Man, I gotta ask. I've been seeing you refer to Alex as "Smitty" for a bit now. You're the only person I have ever heard call him Smitty. Is that his real nickname or just your personal term of endearment?

Can you see how this means nothing to anyone? You left a part out or something.

I apologize. But I'm just curious if that's his real nickname.
