Rasputin 07-04-2017 03:59 AM

After this day I'm boycotting anything from Eagle Claw from my arsinal. Well after I use up what I got.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 04:38 AM

Same shit must be same fish cuz it was same spot but I had him on there good 15 twenty minutes idk. Maybe he wedges in rocks but my shit shouldn'tbe bending out of place like that. ****s.

Oh hello toad do you want to be my friend?

Dunit35 07-04-2017 05:07 AM

We had a massive storm come through about 8pm last night. A lot of rain, sirens even if went off.

On my way to fish. Not feeling good about fishing morning after a storm.

Do you cry when you lose a fish? How do you cope with it? I feel like going into morning. The enitial shock where's off but you never lose it in your gut.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 06:46 AM

****ing fish and their mind tricks. They go and jump so you hurry up and take your pole to that spot then once you cast it's jumping right where you were before. That's why I use thee poles **** you fish I'm on to you.

They still find other places to jump.

I cry, I scream, I cuss, I say hurtful things about that fish and it's entire species. And then I tell them what I'm going to do to them when I finally catch them.

Are you my twin?

Rasputin 07-04-2017 08:01 AM

Well shit I hate leaving especially nuthooks I've been up well over 30 hours and I have to drive home and work tonight to start 6 night 12 hour shifts or however much they work me.

I don't get it everything that worked last year and everything else I can think isn't doing it this year. I have to reevaluate my life and maybe become a monk and get monk tattoos. The only thing worse not catching anything is leaving the lake knowing the next cast could be the one.

Nope. Drum put up a good fight for the first few seconds but give up quickly. That moment when you realize the fish is giving up is always frustrating because you know before even seeing it that it's not a more desirable fish such as walleye.

What is the limit there? And how big are the average ones you kept?

Better than the one hybrid striper I caught today.

I knew last night's storm would screw fishing up.

Can you fillet a carp to escape the bones ?

My brother used to live in the Chec Republic where his girlfriends dad would cook Carp and he said it was awesome.

Between 16-19 inches. I was kidding on the bonus part for the drum and carp.

Why Not? 07-05-2017 09:42 PM

Great day on the water! 8 year old caught 3 kelp bass, once was good enough size to get some good eating meat out of it. 5 year old got shut out but had a blast feeding bait fish to sea gulls. Got two new fishing fanatics on my hands.

Iowanian 07-06-2017 09:14 AM

I haven't had my own line in the water since Feb.

Time has been scarce for such things and when it has been available, I've spent it putting worms on and taking fish off. Bought the youngest a full size rod in June and it's still got the tags on it.

I'm re-evaluating and reprioritizing things and I'm going to start correcting the above issues much more often.

If I had a dollar for everyone who told me 'nah dont worry about the bones, I know EXACTLY how to fillet carp!'... I'd have a good twenty dollars

And every. single. time. I ended up with multiple needle sharp bones jammed into my gums and the roof of my mouth... the only way I've ever had carp that worked, is when they boiled the shit out of it to soften the bones and then made fried cakes akin to salmon patties

Looks like a beautiful day in NorCal, and it also looks like that one fish has two dinner sized filets on him... maybe they're starting to bite, dont quit now!

What kind of man made canal are you on there, used for irrigation maybe?

I fly fish pretty much exclusively. Summers in Alaska, I fly fish up here for trout, char and grayling. And in the winter, I try to do some saltwater fly fishing.

This is a 35-40 pound tarpon I got a few days ago in Belize. Caught it on a Deceiver using a 9' 10# rod (Loomis NRX, if you're interested. Great casting rod). Water was clear so I could see him take the fly about 15 feet away from me. Fought him for about 15 minutes. He made several good runs and leaps. Great fish.

Okay guys. Serious question here. I think a lot of my problems i had last year with losing big fish was my knot slipping.

What knot do you use and where can i find an instructional video of it?

The circle hooks i normally use i connect with a snell to the leader, but i need a knot from the leader to the swivel and swivel to my weight.

Even though I am an avid fly fisherman, I don’t know knots like I should. A good website to learn knots is:

http://www.animatedknots.com

A really handy book for knots is:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/159228311X...4M4290WM&psc=0

My copy of Lefty’s knot book is ruined because of water. The pages stick together after I used the book in the rain by a trout stream. So I’m buying two copies, one for the house where I can use it to make leaders and tie flies, the other to cut out some pages, laminate them and make a knot notebook I can put in my fly gear case.

These two should get you started.

Generally, with larger "normal" hooks I just use a trilene knot. It's like an improved clinch but you make a double loop through the hook eye.

For fly fishing and tiny hooks, I use a double davy knot. It's fast and easy to tie with freezing fingers.

I know exactly ONE good knot, never had a slip, the line has popped several times, but the knot has never slipped... unfortunately, I'm not even sure how to explain how to make it

But I'll try...

Make a full loop through the hook eye, using thumb to preserve that loop, make another full loop through hook eye... using thumb to preserve/squeeze both roughly equal size loops together

Take the extra 4-5 inches of loose line and wrap 5-6 times around your line 'stem' above both loops, then bring remaining line down through BOTH loops

Spit on both loops and line end coming through them, grab line coming through loops with teeth while holding top of line with other hand and cinch down as tightly as possible

Trim off line end but leave an inch or so coming out of your knot, to allow room for a bigger fish to cinch knot down even tighter without pulling line end out of knot and unraveling your work

Hope that makes sense, thats as good as I can explain it

That's a trilene knot.

And you are smart for lubing the line with spit (or water). Monofilament can burn itself when you tighten down the knot. ALWAYS lube your knots with mono.

Easy 6 02-02-2018 09:33 AM

Thats exactly it, loochy... I've had more lines pop from big fish and from trying to yank free from snags than I can remember, but that knot ALWAYS holds

George Liquor 02-02-2018 10:44 AM

Word. Thanks

https://i2.wp.com/fishing.boyslife.o...50%2C488&ssl=1

I had been using this one, and it works fine on my lighter gear and with narrow diameter braided lines. But it's hard to tie right with 50lb mono and it seems to slip on my every once in a while.

Chiefnj2 02-02-2018 11:58 AM

50lb mono to hook, use a snell.

Good stuff Chiefnj, gonna give that a try this spring... it'd be nice to have more than one knot in my tool kit

Rasputin 03-18-2018 03:49 AM

Been working my ass off this winter got me a new home and just been paying on things. Got back tires but still needing front tires and alignment it would suck getting to the lake and have a flat.

Next week I'll have four nights off and bet your ass I'll be at the lake getting my fish on.

It's been depressing not going but I've been determined to set myself up for a good year of catching Biggins.

Thinking about a kayak or an inflatable pontoon boat that maybe easy to take to the lake.

**** **** **** can't wait to go fishing. Nights are still cold but another week should be nice enough fish start biting.

I gotta get my fish on. Hopefully it rains this week so I can have an open fire keep warm at night with next week. Kansas has a fire ban I think still it's been dry but cold.

Caught a nice rainbow on a jerkbait at the Mountain Lake last weekend, first fish of the year, but I turned it loose. Hard to catch them up there this time of year, if I would have had a few more bites I may have tried to make a meal, but I had to work for that one fish. Still fun though. :)

Hoping to get out this week for spring break. Maybe hook into some big blues. Hoping for a giant so I can watch my son land a monster

I have two fishing days scheduled for next weekend. We fish for anything that grabs our lures. It has been probably 6-7 months.

Kind of useless to just keep one, it was keeping size, but I would have needed two or three of the same size to make a decent meal. Big Trout in that little lake though, somebody caught a 13 pounder over the Summer...

Lake gets stocked over the Summer as well, so they are a lot easier to catch on dough baits...especially after they stock it. Using dough bait they always swallow it, and Trout being somewhat delicate, you have to keep those fish or they would die otherwise. Kind of mindless fishing if you ask me, it's much more challenging catching them on lures, and you have the option of releasing them. I do eat them from time to time, they are pretty dang good. :)

I usually target Bass up there, and that was what I was actually going for when I landed that Rainbow, but being an Alpine lake at high elevation, the Largemouth stay relatively small, I always release those...I just like catching them.

If it warms up a bit more by the weekend, I just might have to join you guys in the great outdoors

I'm surprised the bass don't turn into monsters from feeding on the soft stocker trout. That's how those LA area lakes produce those monster bass.

I went yesterday. Skunked! Not even a bite. I can't remember the last time I got skunked. It's been years ago. It was, however, a great day. Got out of the house and on the water and did some fishing. There was a front moving in yesterday and I think that had a lot to do with it.
Oh well, I'll be back at it as soon as I can.

Lakes like Castaic and Piru produce enormous Bass, and it's true that they gorge themselves on the stocked trout. Thats how some of those big Swimbaits came into existence...they are also Florida strain Bass, which are naturally larger than the Northern Strain Largemouth. Castaic and Piru are also very large reservoirs.

Lake where we have our Cabin is a high altitude alpine lake that freezes over in the winter, so the climate is different and it's also not very big...roughly 10 acres. Also, I believe the Bass in the lake are Northern Strain, so they are naturally pre-dispositioned to be smaller. It stays fairly cold up there until early May. I've actually been on my boat, in May, fishing while it was snowing.

That said, there are some 5-6 pound bass in the lake, I've seen them caught, but I haven't caught one yet myself. Maybe about a 3 pounder at best for me. Good thing is, the lake doesn't see a lot of pressure from Bass fisherman, as it's primarily a Trout lake.

Slow bite but big bass are starting to be active. I caught a 23 inch bass yesterday on a black and blue jig with a motoroil lizard

Went into work the other day and my buddy had a 5 gallon bucket full of 7-9oz bank sinkers. Gave me a handful of em.

I feel kinda bad now. I finally caved in a deactivated my Facebook, so I'll miss out on a lot of fishing stuff this summer (until i turn into a pussy and bring it back) so now this thread is my only source of fishing talk.

After St. Patricks day and liberals bitching about people drinking irish car bombs and that being offensive, i have had enough.

People wait too long to start fishing. Pre spawn can be some of the best for all species. I have been doing great on crappie from the shore for over two weeks now. Even ran into a few nice bass though I haven’t targeted them specifically yet. After this little cold spell ends with a nice few days I will plan to get the kayak out and target those active bass.

I took home six this day but could have had way more. I left because I planned to go back with my dad and sure enough that day we took home 16. Really good size ones too. Most about 12 inches with a few 13s and only a couple under 12 inches. I love those isolated spots on the rivers above reservoirs.
