Yeah, their single barrel reserve is on point. Find a barrel pick and it's even better.

Cheers!

lewdog 11-14-2020 03:21 PM

This is called Driftwood Lemonade. I had a bourbon friend turn me to this drink a few years ago. The Evan Williams 100 proof is my go-to affordable cocktail mixer. It's fantastic.

For lemon cocktails I don't think anything is better than San Pellegrino. It's great with just regular bourbon, black cherry whiskey or honey whiskey.

2oz bourbon
2oz triple sec
4oz lemonade

Its my first owned bottle. I've had pours while out before and highly enjoyed it. Just reading up on it, there seems to be significant batch variations in both proof and flavors.

I pulled the whole "neck pour" lingo off the Net to fit in with the cool crowd. Is that something you've experienced? Bourbon opens up more after there's more head space for O2 in the bottle.

Huge variations I'm told on ECBP which is pretty awesome and let's you hunt your preferred choice.

Neck pour. You smooth mother****er!!!!

Lots of guys talk about letting a bottle sit to expose it to oxygen and have it "open up." It's really not something that actually happens. It's mostly about your palate on the day you drink it. Notice how bourbon changes a ton depending on what you ate before drinking it? It's mostly that.

I always open a bottle, fill a flask, and sneak a taste before serving my friends a week or month later. I do not drink great whiskies alone.

Elijah Craig barrel proof is amazing stuff. There is certainly some batch variation but it's not major. One or two teaspoons of water will really open it up nicely.

I'll look for both. If it wasn't for the smoothness of Elijah Craig, I doubt I would have gotten into it beyond the occasional Old Fashioned.

Yeah EC is pretty smooth for the % of alc it has which is nice because if you're not expecting it after 3 you're feeling pretty damn good. I would say EW single barrel is probably one of the smoothest I've had in that price range (makers, trace, I'd even throw in bullet too) alot of folks argue Four Rose's. I'm personally not a fan of it though.

If OTW ever returns to this thread and offers to send you some samples do it. He sent me some of the best stuff I've ever had particularly EH Taylor which unfortunately seems about as hard to get as Blantons. If you ever get to try Taylor do it at first it's a total mind **** because to me atleast had multiple flavors on first sip but an amazingly nice finish.

Titty Meat 11-14-2020 10:12 PM

Also Bearcat try Old Grandad. Not sure if it's an old fashion type of drink or not but that's the best $20 you're going to find and will definitely feel it after a couple.

All of them kinda have their own thing going on. Laphroaig is big iodine, Lagavulin is campfire and liquid smoke and Ardbeg is barbecue and brine.

Lagavulin 12 is great too. Usually higher ABV.

I also enjoy Caol Ila quite a bit. It's an Islay too but has more of an ashy vibe. It's weird to use those flavor descriptors in a positive way but that's about the only way to describe the flavor attraction. Once you figure out peated stuff, it's all gravy.

This is why I can drink scotch over bourbon. I know the bourbon purists will disagree but I think scotch has a bigger range of flavors. I know I have a small sample size for bourbons.

phisherman 11-16-2020 10:01 AM

I totally agree. Scotch has a bit of an advantage though in that it can be matured in lots of different types of casks versus bourbon, which has to be aged only in a first-use oak barrel.

Been a long time since I tried Caol Ila...will have to give it a try. Your descriptions of the others are spot on. My wife just got me an Ardbeg Uigeadail which I'm going to enjoy over the TG holidays.

I love Weller antique though.

srvy 11-22-2020 01:56 AM

I've had way to many Knob Creek small batches and Coke zero's tonight. I am not a huge fan of Knob Creek small batch but it was gifted at a project startup. It's a bit harsh for my pallet and I like some heat the finish is weak. But it works well with a coke mixer and is easily tamed with a splash of water. It was a big handle from Costco that they buy a case and hand out at startups. I am just happy it wasn't Jack Black that a staple for these things.

I guess I am sounding ungrateful the stuff just gives me an aggressive buzz for some reason.

Billion hours of PTO? Are you a year into the job?

It seems like yesterday that you got fired.

My 800lb gorrila closed our office without notice on Friday. Full base pay plus 100% corporate bonus paid after we return from 60 days off. Converted out "use it or lose it" regular vacation into cash! I had 10 days. Talk about a nice holiday bonus.

Yeah most places when you have that much PTO it's kind of a farce. I get it definitely a rock and a hard place for a business just like everything else during the COVID era.

At my place weve had so many cases, building gets evacuated due to so many positive cases on a weekly basis, etc morale is extremely low and the turnover is high, alot of people took early retirement there is a huge shortage of unfilled positions. I had to crawl through glass just to get approved to work from home. Literally multiple doctor letters stating I'm at high risk for contacting severe COVID. Time off used to be granted by seniority around holidays but now they just said **** it and approved anyone who puts in they need people so bad.

Its amazing despite having 3 months to come up with a plan they really didnt come up with anything other than enforcing masks and putting down arrows on the floor telling people which way to go and of course nobody follows it. They really need to shut it down for a month come up with a strategy to get more people to work from home which IMO will help increase productivity and boost morale
