Would you prefer it just wash up on shore as a carcass?

This isn't a 50 lb fish that still has a ton runway in front of it. I can see some frustration in things like that. We have a tendency to pass on good bucks when hunting in the hopes of them turning into great bucks. Putting a 70 lb fish back in the water may make some sense there. But that fish IS that great buck. And it's almost certainly near the end of its useful life.

20+ years and it's not been caught; that's plenty of time for one of those rod and reelers to have gotten it. Now it's pretty much on the way out either way so why you'd have a preference for it ending up hooked over just keeling over and washing up onshore somewhere is a bit of a mystery to me.

If it can still spawn then it can still pass along genetics to its babies and hopefully more can grow to that size. But if it is passed its sexual maturity then you are right. It just saddens me to see a world record fish eaten instead of say in a tank at Bass Pro or something.

Like i said, I'm not going to tell you what to do with your fish. I just don't agree with eating trophies.

Also hooked one crappie, lost another gar and snagged into a huge freaking buffalo (had a scale the size of a half dollar on my lure after he came off).

I figured 9 am on a Monday morning, there wouldn't be anybody out there.. don't these ****ing people have jobs? There was about 15 people fishing down there by the time i packed up.

Its not just your area, I've been noticing a serious uptick in the number of people vying for the same places over the last few years

TV shows have at least something to do with it IMO

Facebook fishing groups are cancer.

When i got back to where i was parked, i was the only car with Kansas tags.

There are tons of people from Missouri who fish these spots. I assume off tips from those groups.

Because I can't think of a better thread, here's what I got to watch over lunch this afternoon...

http://chiefsplanet.com/BB/picture.p...pictureid=1843

We have a pair of bald eagles that have nested about a 1/2 mile away and they seem to have decided that my back yard is a hell of a fishing hole. On Sunday he came down right at the water's edge next to that little bush in the bottom left of the picture) and snagged a little bass. Today about 3 minutes after this picture he went up that right into that cove in the back, snagged another one and took off to the west with it (out of the right side of the frame).

I'm really hoping that they've recently set up shop and this will become a common occurrence. I've seen at least 1 of them the last 3 days and this afternoon both of them were zipping about. Pretty cool shit.

Edit: Ugh...file-size limits; I had to compress that to the point of not being all that interesting. I wonder if a photobucket or something would work better. He's damn sharp lookin'...

Flathead i believe grow 3-5lbs a year. There is a reason why you don't see many flatheads over 50lbs anymore, because the trophy ones are overfished and eaten all the time.

If you want to trot line and eat trophy catfish, knock yourself out.. I'm not going to stop you. But i don't agree with it.

Having a fish like this live for the sake of it being a monster makes perfect sense, because if it is truly 135lbs, it's 12 lbs bigger than the world record rod and reel flattie.

What happened to the world record fish?

Heh, yea. It died. Same with the last two record blue cats, one was 135 lbs caught a few years ago and the latest one was 142.

There is an asterisk next to that record because though it was caught by fishing rod and reel it was snagged. See, the guy that caught it was fishing for crappie in the Elk City Reservoir when he saw a huge flathead floating near the top and struggling. So he threw his jig across it's back, snagged it and brought it close enough to shore for him to wade out and bring it in.
He tried selling it to places like Bass Pro but it died so he donated it to the KDWP. They did an autopsy and found that the reason it was struggling is because it was having troubles digesting a 6 lb. carp.
Elk City Reservoir is about 40 miles from my house so I heard all about it.

Of the record cats that have been autopsied none I've heard more than about 30 years old, indicating that available forage is more important to growing big cats than genetics.

On a side note: very few sport fisherman are going after flatheads and the few that do find them very difficult to get on line. That's why it's legal to hand fish for them in some states. The states that don't allow "noodling" do so for the fisherman's safety not because they're worried about running out of flatheads.

Dunit35 05-28-2017 09:31 PM

Caught one fish today and it was a solid saugeye. I didn't weigh it but it was 21". 14" is minimum in Oklahoma and they are supposed to taste like walleye.

Fish and game pulled up next to us as well. They checked our licenses and chatted for 10 minutes. They did say they caught one boat trying to keep fish under legal limit. That pisses me off. They seemed surprised that we are a catch and release boat.

Fish and Game said the boat was trying to keep Saugeye under legal limit. Keeping a undersized fish that doesn't reproduce. Nothing pisses me off more.

One more edit: from what I've read, Saugeyes do reproduce

I don't recall ever being asked by a fish and game ranger for my license so it kind of pisses me off. I want to show them the 3 pole license I spent 36 bucks on. I've gone up to them and said hey do you want to see my license their like no that's fine I believe you. Mother ****er. I know if I didn't have one I'd be ****ed so I want to show them.

Good job on your catch. I'm starting my 13 day/night vacation after i get off in the morning. My plans are in fluctuation so not sure how much fishing i'm going get in. Planning on going to Idaho but that's a long drive.

Anyone do some fishing in Idaho? Trout, Salmon, anyone catch a Sturgeon ?

TrebMaxx 05-29-2017 01:34 PM

My family had a cabin on Priest Lake in N. Idaho. Brook Trout for breakfast and then head out on the lake for Mackinaw. Man I miss that.

stumppy 05-29-2017 06:10 PM

Took my grandson to a friends pond today. He caught a few fish, got to go out in a kayak by himself and went riding on the 4 wheeler with him.
Damn fine day.

Aaaahh Kansas. :hump: You get two poles on regular license and pay $6 extra to be able use 3 poles. I don't know what the fine is if you get caught using more than 3 poles without it.

You also have to pay extra for a trout permit

Rasputin 05-29-2017 10:26 PM

Ah, I thought you meant the 3-pole alone was $36.

As for fines, it's $98 just to get into the courthouse and from there, since it's a class C misdemeanor (as are the vast majority of wildlife violations), the maximum is $500 and a month in jail, though it'll likely be just a simple fine, probably no more than $100 depending on county.

Not to mention possible loss of license and/or equipment.

I shouldn't complain of Kansas I know other states are worse. The thing that makes me mad is they apparently up the age to I think 72 to not need a license. **** em I'm not buying one after I turn 65 I'll sit in jail but I'm not going pay for one @ age 65.

I have a couple decades to go before I have to worry about that though lol

It's 75, and you can buy a senior "lifetime" hunt/fish combo for about $40 that will be valid for those 10 years between 65-75.

I've never tried it but went to grab chicken liver and saw it and thought hey that shit should stay on the hook really well and it's nasty.

Went out this morning for a while. My buddy managed to pull a 40lb flathead out of the Kaw.

I was skunked.

Broke 6 lines and lost probably 4lbs of lead. This is growing increasingly frustrating and I'm starting to not have fun anymore. Snags and wasted time and money.

Hog's Gone Fishin 06-24-2017 03:36 PM

I'm still awaiting my new bass boat to get the Garmin Panoptix installed. Hopefully I get to pick it up next week and just go right on down to lake Texhoma.

I have never gotten into catfishing because of how boring it can be. Just sitting around for hours has just never been appealing to me. I much prefer the hunt of fishing.

See I think night fishing is the best thing ever. It maybe in the middle of the night and nothing for hours then you hear it. A bell. The bell rings and fish on and it can be exhilarating to bring something in out of the darkness.

Dunit35 06-26-2017 12:31 PM

Fishing was awesome today. We landed around 25 hybrid stripers and whites in two hours between two of us.

We'd go to a spot and they'd start feeding. Couldn't cast fast enough. They started feeding in front of us twice and the third time we were cruising to a spot and saw them jumping everywhere. Spent 30 minutes reeling them in as fast as we could.

my son and I went to an old quarry friday. Fished out of a small john boat. We caught 18 bass ranging from 12" to 17". Most were on a whaky rigged sinko (motor oil and red flake) or drop shotting, which was new to me but produced a ton of bites and several fish.

Up before the sun this morning to try my spot again. Shit luck. I don't know what has changed, but i for the life of me cannot stay out of snags. I lost my last 4 8oz weights, got mad, gave my bait to my friend and went home.

I've probably left 20lbs of led on the bottom of the river this summer alone.

I'm so ****ing frustrated right now. Every time i snap a line it's $3 down the drain.

You are not the only one having a shitty year catching fish. I spent a week on vacation five nights with one catfish just because it decided to storm and that was the only time water stirred them up. I'm going back out there tonight for gluten.

Great idea to hire a guide for one day to help get a feel for the place, then set out on your own

Jeeez, maybe we shouldnt feel so bad after all

Think of it this way with all the rain and higher than normal lakes the fish must have found food source like shad hatch and so they just aren't hungry this year. It's an off year so next year there are gonna be some bigguns prime to catch.

Couple old guys pulled more fish out the hole. 2 of them around 30lbs and a bunch of 5-10lbs. Soon as the holiday is over going back out for a monster

Shit. Lighting to the south looking severe thunder storm. Lightning is impressive. Had a fireworks show earlier you could see across the lake was neat. My son crashed out in the car I didn't bother setting up a tent with all these storms this year ****ing up my fishing:cuss:

Actually not true best I've done this year is was during a storm rolling in so bring it the **** on God !

Rasputin 07-03-2017 11:55 PM

Oh I hear them bastages jumping out of the water taunting me ****ing prick fish. GET ON MY HOOK.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 12:46 AM

Ahhh Twizzlers and a lukewarm cup of joe. Only thing make this night better is

IF I COUGHT A MOTHER ****ing FISH.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 01:16 AM

I don't know how many of you are into night fishing but I found one of the coolest things ever for a buck at Walmart. Headlights for your hat they just clip on your bill. Things like this use to cost twenty to thirty bucks so these things are cool as **** imo.

I'm wearing my LUCKY fishing hat tonight as I always wear my lucky hat night fishing not no luck so far.

Looks like the storm pussed out that's a good thing.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 01:49 AM

Any time now.

Come on you ungrateful bastards that's a fine meal out there for ya

Rasputin 07-04-2017 01:51 AM

The one who sucks the penis's are in the weeds I can't get too without major snags.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 01:58 AM

Haha my son earlier in reference to Full Metal Jacket his favorite movie. Gotta love my son.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 02:00 AM

It's 3am. Come on last year I could set my watch by catching a fish at 3am. I don't even wear a watch.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 02:29 AM

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuiiiiiiiiikuuujjjjjjck

I had fish on and felt great good tug and then mother ****ing lead clasp bent the **** unclasping the hook and bye bye fish. :(

What the holy hell.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 02:30 AM

Son of a cock whore bitch

Rasputin 07-04-2017 02:40 AM

How the **** does this even happen? Twice now in as many of years happened last year too after a good fight. ****s. How many ****s does it take to get over this ?

Rasputin 07-04-2017 03:25 AM

Holy smokes I maybe back in business even though I'm down to two poles for the night as I was making my way around the bend along the cliff and edge as luck would have it I came across a one armed crawfish getting splashed against the rocks. (Did I mention I'm wearing my LUCKY hat). Could be a gift from the Gods like when Purculis or whatever his name was blessed with a shield and sword to fight Medusa and chop off her head.

Anyways I checked on my other pole down a waze and go figure empty hooks. So I just use this gift from above. Love ya big guy in the sky mean it. Now I got to lines in the water and hope for some results.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 03:44 AM

It's a little bushwhack to get to my spot from our actual campsite and Everytime I go back through the tall grassy weeds I see this thing that the shadows make it look like a giant rat ****ing log. I had to move it so it would quit scarring jeepers out of me. What a night.

Can't believe that fish bent the **** out of my clasp. God ****ing dammit.

Rasputin 07-04-2017 03:50 AM

I think I'm going write a well worded letter to Eagle Claw the makers of my Grief. Twice in two years come on. I don't know if I can make it to work tomorrow night or rest of the week for this travistation it's done to my mind and we'll being. You don't just lose a fish like that.
