After a 2nd and 3rd viewing it’s gotten better. I think my memories of 4-6 are clouding my judgement.

Rey's bloodline , it's forgivable though her sudden mastery of the force I don't like. Snoke getting OWNed by Ben Solo was truly lame. Lea was still a novice as a Force user considering she was supposedly as adept and potentially as powerful as Luke irritated me. Lea being the Mother of Ben flat out gave up on him which goes beyond the suspension of belief. They're murders on death row who's Mom's still love love them unconditionally. |

*dramatic pause* Rogue One |

The characters were shown developed and "grown up"/old EXACTLY as they should have been. The only way Luke becomes "My Luke"( Mark Hamill ), is if everything is ****ing peachy in the galaxy and he's running a Jedi academy. Welp, guess what? Sweet little dumbassed JJ killed any chance of that happening when he and Kasdan WROTE the mother****er and kicked things off in 7. Johnson took the plate of shit handed to him, and added some depth while mercifully steering the direction away from JJ's tard-fest. |

You quote the EU, then make this statement. Luke in the EU was nothing like Luke in TLJ. And quite honestly, Luke's journey in the new trilogy isn't even close to being the most damning aspect. Leia Poppins, Finn (who the hell is Finn?), Poe (weak character), Holdo (what?), Rose (What the ****?), DJ (waste of an actor), the killing of Ackbar without so much as a mention, the Fathier's (let's save the animals but leave the kids as slaves?), Yoda affecting the corporeal world, etc. The entire thing is a cluster**** of epic proportions, not to mention, a shirtless Kylo Ren (which did nothing to further the story). |
It wouldn't have been that hard to please the old fans and cater to the kids.

How in the world Johnson have missed SUCH a slam dunk? |

In TLJ he actually had a character arc...one that perfectly fit with what we know of him as an established character...and had an extremely satisfying climax. Finn and Rose do suck ass though... ROFL |

I would have rather seen him fight another day but I have a feeling he'll be back in IX. But the rest? Sheesh. |
So I'm just going to come in here not having read the whole thread, and obviously not as invested as some of the other posters in here, but I just watched the movie for the second time, and I really like it. I get why it pisses some people off, but I think this was exactly what the movie needed to be to move Star Wars forward. I also think Adam Driver gave an incredible ****ing performance. I genuinely wasn't sure if he was going to end up good or bad, and he seemed on the verge and tormented throughout. I really respect his work.

Finn was not necessarily a weak link or character, and I like Oscar's character. They should have paired those two up for the "side quest" of the movie, and not even CREATED "Rose".
Rose sucks ass and should have died. |
Finn's character was perfectly setup to die at the end of TLJ. Not killing him was one of the dumbest moments of the movie. And Rose is a worthless character.
|
Every time they had a good way to finish a story arc for a character they completely ****ed it up. Leia should have died at the beginning. Finn should have died without Rose saving him. Luke should have actually been there to fight Kylo, and if he would have died that way it would have still sucked but much better then astral projection Luke fading out. Dumb dumb dumb
It was like the entire movie was meant to be one disappointment after another. |

You just wanted a ****ing cartoon. |
Watched TLJ twice last weekend just to make sure I didnt actually hate it, but yeah I still hated it... the whole thing has become so disjointed and full of competing stories and directorial visions that it shouldnt have surprised me
This old cow has been milked bone dry... just go back and watch the first 3 if you want to relive the old magic, and maybe throw in Rogue One if you want a well done side story from the same universe Han Solo is probably going to be a shitburger, its been nothing but turmoil on that set, from Howard taking over halfway through, to Ehrenrich reportedly struggling to replicate a young Harrison Ford so badly that they brought in an on-set acting coach (very rare) to help him |
