You'd think it's just some weird teen drama given the nature of the plot but it's so much better and far more sinister. Binged the entire show in about one night and excited as ever living **** for S2. Definitely check it out if you're bored and got the time.

I binged it after your recommendation, couldn’t stop watching after I started, Christina Ricci’s character is pretty insane, she’s great.

Yep absolutely bat shit, and maybe I just have some weird affinity for crazy chicks but god damn did I find her smoking hot throughout the entire show.

The English. Totally not what I was expecting from a Western.

Has Fleischman is in Trouble just stayed off everyone's radar, or is it actively repellant to others? I know it's not groundbreaking, but it is fascinating to my mind. It's up my alley as one of those shows where everyone's an utter asshole AND incomprehensible saint in turn, where they parcel out the nuances and details that make up people in an intricate and engrossing manner. I know the writing that originated it made a big splash, but it doesn't seem like anyone is talking about it as a series. Maybe people are exhausted with the notion of navel-gazing and meditating on the human condition in this manner. But I still find it one of the more fascinating shows of the year.

Somewhere between Woody Allen and This is Us.

Yeah, so I should have waited until this was finished before I started it. I'm not sure I can wait a month to finish it out. I also didn't know it was based on a novel.

I don't know how I'm going to feel about the conclusion of the show, but the interim is damned enthralling.

It is an interesting choice that the Libby character is the narrator for the story. The writing is pretty tight, and there is some facepalmy stuff when Eisenberg gets preachy. I don't know if that was the intention or not. Bot some of it is pretty tight like the comment about "I make 300K that would be a great living anywhere except the 40 blocks you insist we live." Most of the dialogue is really tight.

The 90's stuff is cheeky enough to be funny and keep it light. Eisenberg does a really REALLY good job on the performance. Same with Lizzy Caplan and Claire Danes, plus a TED sighting. It wound me up enough I restarted Homeland to get some more Claire Danes Action. She was really good. Damned compelling even.

Anyway, it's a nice look at the nuance of humanity.

1899: rate at a 7

Just finished it. No spoilers and there are a few twists. For me it was hard to follow. There too many wrinkles. If you are watching an episode and wanting it to end, doesn't bode well.

They are the same people who made Dark. I haven't watched it yet. But is has rave reviews.

I don't think it is my style of movie.

ToxSocks 12-06-2022 03:58 PM

Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities is a fun watch. If you haven't seen it, think "Tales from the Crypt" but with Del Toro's world rebuilding.

There's some interesting tales and some really cool creatures. More on the horror side of things than thriller.

Honestly? If you're referring to The Devil's Hour, the best 'basics' to give you ahead of time is that it's good, really good, and pays off rather than petering out.

It's not 'dependent' on twists and turns, but they're there and enhance the experience if consumed organically.

Broadest strokes possible, it's a procedural mystery of the modern British sort that presents a mystery to the audience as well, and involves a 'mastermind' type in custody with the interrogations and revelations you would expect of a procedural with a mastermind in custody.

Disregard if you're talking about Midnight Mass, as I haven't seen it and am not referring to it. ;)

TwistedChief 12-07-2022 04:07 AM

I watched the Devil’s Hour just because the reviews were so universally positive.

Supernatural stuff isn’t my cup of tea and during the series there were definitely parts where I wanted to shut it off.

But it absolutely paid off. Really well done and unique.

It is a little campy type kids school genre similar to Hogwarts themes.

The cinematography great, down to the makeup. It is directed by Tim Burton, which illustrates some of the tenor and the humor sublime.

Not finding anything posted in this forum about the series "Billions" that I have been watching on Prime.

I highly recommend it, well done. I am half way through on season 3 of 6.

Yeah, that part is weird and the "Non Binary" Taylor had me scratching my head, but it is hard not to be intrigued by "it's character."

Yeah, when I quit, it had just started it's own fund and was still pretty compelling.

Given how many seasons it went after that it's hard for me to believe it didn't get pretty derivative given how far they went with each character in the first few seasons, but it's earned the right for me to get back to it.

I've watched all 6 seasons. They all pretty much blend together as derivatives of each other until the last couple when there are some changes.

It's okay. I wouldn't say it's jumped the shark and I'll probably always watch it because it's my profession and there's an amusement factor. But the dialogue gets to be insanely pedantic and the storyline is just meh.

If you're looking for shows to watch, The Patient, White Lotus season 2, and any of the Fargo seasons are recent ones that have grabbed me.

I'm on episode five or six of 1899 and it was infuriating at first how many times somebody asked a question and then the other person walked away or they cut to another scene but that's a minor gripe. Way better than that German show Dark

I finished it last night and can say I wasn't expecting it to go the way it did. Not that it gets any more exciting per se, its more of a story development.

Its a western that's not really a western yet captures the brutality of the wild west in a way I appreciated. Probably just the right amount of episodes before I would've started checking out though.

A decent horror series that I just stumbled upon. Let the Right One In. There's been a movie of the same name, and then a remake of the original movie. But this is a 10 episode series from Showtime. It takes the general theme of the movies, with a bit of a twist. I've been really pleasantly surprised, because I never heard anything about it when it was initially released.

I jumped in at Season 2 last week. Just finished it. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, since it didn't seem to be my kind of show, I watched with the wife over Christmas break. All the characters are great but F. Murray Abraham and Aubrey Plaza stole the show for me.

Gonna watch Season 1 next. Is Season 3 really coming out this week?

Shoot you're right, looks like Season 3 release is far away yet. Not sure why I thought it was out over Christmas. May have been confused with reading it was getting confirmed as being released.

Yeah, Season 3 won't likely come until about this time next year. You may have read it was confirmed for a 3rd season but that was a given due to the reception it's received. Rumors have it taking place in Japan (or somewhere in Asia) and covering eastern religion/death as theme.

Terrific show though, I agree.

It really is. Season 1 when the Baron ate human food and projectile vomited all over the place I was hooked.

The movie is even better.

And this latest episode released today - Me Time - is on par with any TV episode I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Claire Danes is ****ing brilliant. What a great show.

Have you watched the final episode?

I thought it was profoundly good. Not the conclusion I was expecting but certainly the conclusion I should have expected.

And I thought the messaging (which is the point of all this) was really well done. My life is virtually nothing like any of these characters except my age. Even my motivations aren’t even close. I’m not looking to recapture my youth and I haven’t grown apart from my spouse. But the messaging was articulate and powerful, and ultimately profound.

I’m open to it being impressive to me because I’m a simpleton. But I think it’s really good. And just the words alone wouldn’t carry the weight without the story and performances.

This wasn’t what I expected when I started it but damn am I glad I did. Bravo.

So after a decade plus, I decided to give Battlestar Galactica another watch. I'm only 5 episodes in (plus the pilot which was outstanding) and I'm blown away at how good this show has held up over the years. Ronald Moore struck gold with this show. It can get heavy handed from time to time with all the religious implications, but every show is a story worthy of being its own to this point. If you've never seen this, well first off what's wrong with you, but most importantly move it to the front of your queue. You won't be disappointed.

I binged Wednesday in one day yesterday and I think it might be the best thing Tim Burton has ever created. Recommend!

Agreed. Posted basically the same thing a few weeks ago. Recommended.

I just finished the Lincoln Lawyer stream.

Wow. Quite good. A number of twists and entertaining especially the last 5 minutes of the last episode. Damn, he is brutal:)

One great point viewing Netflix on the computer (assuming you can't do this on the TV) is to set the screen/viewing speed from 50% playback up to 150%. I watch at 125% thus I can binge quicker:)

The Last of Us coming into some spiiiicy reviews. Some hint it could go down in the pantheon of greatest HBO shows.

Craig Mazin is a big name behind it (Chernobyl). Seems like he doesn't miss.

Party Down is starting up again on Starz in February. Pretty funny show, hopefully it’s as good as the last run. It first aired when Starz tv series were in their infancy so it failed after 2 seasons, I highly recommend. Sadly Lizzy Caplan will not be back though, huge bummer.

I recently finished season 1 of Sprung on FreeVee. It's pretty funny - from the creators of Raising Hope and My Name Is Earl. Martha Plimpton is hilarious.

Godfather of Harlem

Been enjoying this series, season three just dropped.

Didn't have anything come up in my search. Anyone else watching it on the MGM channel?
Gangster shows are my favorite and this takes place in the early 60s.

Man I have thought about watching this on countless occasions but never pulled the trigger. I watched the original film it was based on and to this day I consider it a top 10 favorite film of all time. Guess I'm just worried I'll watch it and compare everything to the film and it simply won't live up to the pedestal I have the film on. I dunno, might finally give in and give it a shot though.

New Amsterdam on Netflix and Snow Girl. The first one has long 5 seasons and the second one contains of 6 episodes only.
For those who are streaming content with the firestick only, here is the list of kodi alternatives.
Would be definitely helpful to know your options, right?

I have been enjoying "In the Dark" on Netflix. A blind chick and her friends get into all sorts of trouble. I would call it a mystery thriller with some ribald humor thrown in.

On the last of the 4-part documentary on Bernie Madoff on Netflix and thoroughly enjoying it.

I think I mentioned this show earlier in this thread. I love it.

EDIT: Confirmed. Posted about it last September.

Just started The Good Cop on Netflix. It's actually decent. A little bit true crime, a little bit mystery, and funny too.

I never thought I'd say it but Josh Groben is actually a pretty good actor. Brilliant casting because his awkwardness totally makes his character.

So I needed something that I could have in the background and I put on the Chef Show on Netflix.

I'm not exactly sure it's relationship to the Movie Chef with Favreau, I think it is like a companion thing. Essentially Favreau and Roy Choi (who I think consulted on Chef) go around to restaurants and get in the kitchen and make some dishes from all types of places. There isn't a real clear direction or anything, it's just these 2 dudes make food and talk about food.

It's not life changing, but I can't get enough of it. Most of the techniques and shit I've seen and most of the time the chef's aren't necessarily compelling, but Favreau is. If you don't know, Favreau has some cooking game. He went through some classes at a culinary school to prepare for Chef and he is a legit foodie. Plus I'm pretty sure he has a full commercial kitchen at his place (they did like 3 episodes there). But you wouldn't know it, he's about as humble as can be, and shows the chef's absolutely tremendous respect (which is awesome - if anyone could stroll in with an ego - it would be Favreau, he could say yeah, I kicked off the MCU and revived Star Wars, I don't need your shit). Him and Roy have obviously a good relationship and flip each other some shit some. It's really cool because I don't think they do a bunch of prep or editing or production. If Favreau screws something up, they leave it in, and you can tell Roy isn't an actor or star or anything. Ultimately it feels very real, and from a personal perspective, I truly enjoyed Favreau and Roy's relationship. Plus some of the Chefs have held some conflicting viewpoints from others in other episodes and they just let it all be.

Anyway, it feels like about as genuine thing as I've seen in awhile, and yeah some of the food is cool, but I'll watch that as long as they'll put it out. It's obvious they care about food, and they treat everyone and everything on the show with respect.

I'd recommend it if you like food.

Has anyone watched the Murdoch Mysteries on Hulu? I am only 4 episodes in but find it enjoyable. There are 13 (I have seen mention of up to 15) season so I have a long way to go!

The wife and I rather enjoy it. Heard it's done either now or after the next season, though.
