I don't know if I've gotten to the point where I'd say I would not undo the trade yet, but Wil's 102 AB so far this season is a data point in favor of the trade. Yeah its a fraction of a minor league season, but his power has fallen off and he's striking out at a higher rate than ever now.

To me, the trade seems to be a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This team has a swagger. They fight for 27 outs. The starters grind when they don't have it, and they dominate when they do. The middle relievers shorten the games. The closer(s) slam the door. Even the long relievers keep us in games.
Our hitters are spoiling tough two strike pitches, shooting outside pitches the other way, and generally go to the plate with a plan every time. Maybe I'm giving Shields too much credit, and he isn't solely responsible for all of it, but the trade signifies a change in attitude/expectations, and Shields seems to have the perfect mentality for this team. |
If Odorizzi makes it good for him. I don't think I'd regret the trade because of him. It's Myers that will make it look stupid. Although as mentioned his numbers aren't quite as dominant in AAA so far. Maybe he's finally getting bored with playing down there.

I was initially not happy with the trade (largely because of the extra pieces and my initial underestimation of Wade Davis' value vs. Odorizzi and the extra pieces).
I changed my mind after a little bit of time (and after evaluating some of the concerns about Wil Myers). I think the first post in this thread is about that, actually. KC still needs to make the playoffs either this year or next OR get better production from Davis in the rotation over the course of that contract than the Rays get from Odorizzi. If they don't make the playoffs and Davis doesn't work out as a starter, the trade fails. I still think Myers is an all-star level guy in MLB, but I'm pretty convinced at this point he is more a righthanded Jay Bruce than Ryan Braun light. My feelings about Utley are clear. Make it happen! |
so what if the Royals shocked the world and won a World Series this year?
how many years of futility would you accept for 1 WS ring? |
