I like that old scout a bit better but that dickel bottled in bond which is a hell of a nice value. Have an unopened bottle in my stash and seeing some stock at my local store so will need to pick up another bottle or two before it dries up.

Really like the Piggyback. A solid "meh" on the Old Scout. I like the bottle of 7 year I have better. Old Ezra is nice. Haven't opened the Yellowstone yet.

I like Knob Creek Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Knob creek single barrel is even better. It's 9 years old, 120 proof, single barrel and around my way, I've bought a bottle for as little as $36. It's even better if you can find a good store private barrel selection. I've found some that were 12-13 years old and great for a price in the $40's. It's probably the best deal in bourbon given the age, proof and quality.

Nice! I'm actually more impressed with your collection of barrel proofs in the background, especially the EH Taylor Barrel Proof. Is the Jack Daniels in the background the single barrel barrel proof? I recently bought a private barrel selection of that and it is great. I realize that Jack is not technically bourbon and the regular stuff is more of a mixer whisky (at least to me), but the single barrel barrel proof is really good.

Sipping on an Elijah Craig small batch store pick from Plumpjack Wines in California. Their 2019 EC pick is still available in their web store and is a steal at $30.

Yes, yes you should have. I was lucky to find one in Lawrence back in December. My wife is a huge rye fan, so she was over-the-top thrilled.

Some ones I recently tried:

Woodinville (nice, sweet, light, with spice, vanilla bean and caramel)
Bulleit 10 year (oak, dried fruit, and smoky finish)
Bowman Port Barrel Finish (Port fragrance on the nose, baked fruit, char finish)
Balcones Baby Blue (butter popcorn aromas and tastes with caramel notes)
Balcones Brimstone (Bold Texas whiskey with strong BBQ/bacon overtones)
Widow Jane 12 (pear and butterscotch up front, smoky chocolate finish)
Peerless Single Barrell (creme broulet, roasted nuts, salted caramel)


All very different, but good in their own right. The Texas whiskeys are truly unique, made from blue heritage corn. I keep turning to them even if my mind tells me not to. ;) For you whiskey drinkers...try Peerless. They're pretty new, and way overpriced, but I suspect they're going to be an ultra-premium distiller in short order.

This was a tremendous tip. So cheap and almost perfect for old fashioneds. Not about to drink it by itself, but much better than other Evan Williams stuff IMO. Thanks!

Did some Coronavirus shopping and came home with a bottle of Wathen's Barrel Proof and a bottle of Bulleit Blenders Select.

Around 2 weeks ago my Son stopped by and he and his Wife (Daughter-in-law) wanted to toast my recovery. It was The Macallan Cask Scotch Whiskey.

Never tasted better Whisky in my ENTIRE life.......it was amazing!

Details on the Bulleit Blenders once you taste. I’m hearing good things.

I had some last night, but it was after the Wathen's. I'll make sure to start with the Bulleit tonight.

Lew is just going to quietly snicker when he contemplates people calling crappy green label Weller or McKenna 10 "rare-ish" bottles.

Sorry if you dig the green label Weller; that stuff is bad. And it's absolutely insane that people are hoarding it.

I've seen one bottle of McKenna since moving to PHX and they were asking $90.

I'm pretty indifferent on Weller Special Reserve, but I've not seen a bottle here either.

The last year has been really silly. Even 6 months ago, there would have been 12+ bottles of McKenna 12 at any given time on the shelves.

Age stated bourbon has gone nuts. I can't explain it. People are chasing bourbons that are seriously not good to mediocre at best. Not sure why.

Stick with Elijah Craig small batch, store picks if you can. Those are usually very good.

I live in the poor west valley but we should definitely meet up. I will gladly share my bourbon with anyone wanting to try some.

Agreed on the Weller SR. It is not great and I won't EVER search/buy another bottle.

This. Phoenix is a bourbon wasteland for the most part. Need to have connections to find when things hit shelves because the allocation sucks and things are gone quickly.


Bourbon popularity has gone crazy. Mckenna was a good $40 bottle. Now it's going for secondary prices in many stores around here. It's decent but it's not something amazing either.

I'm not a heavy drinker, so after finishing some of these bottles I will be sticking mostly to store picks and the decent lower level bourbons you can easily find without having to open your wallet wide.

Friend of mine picked me up a bottle of Eagle Rare, so I finally get to try it!

Thoughts on 4R small batch select? Felt a little steep at $65 so passed.

Screw that! Im a big 4R fan too. But for around that price i can find a barrel proof single barrel store pick. I have a obsq almost 10 years aged that is my favorite one so far. I don't have all 10 recipes yet. The small batch select is good but i bought it for $55 and i thought that was a little high for what it is.

Anyone do any CV shopping? I have a bottle of Smoke Wagon Single Barrel waiting on me, along with those Bulleit and Wathen's I bought right before I got sick.

Plus that bottle of Pappy's from O.City, of course.
