I don’t see how we’re affording this guy unless it’s a multi year deal that has a low year one cap hit. And I’m hoping they don’t do that.

A DE with a bad back who sucks against the run for 17M? I'm good off that. |
Also remember Olivier Vernon plans to play after missing all of last year recovering from the Achilles tear late in the 2020 season.

The only way to get Smith at this point, it seems, would be to offer him a longer-term deal, which you don't want to do with a back injury. So screw it, just don't sign him at all. Not worth it. |

$17M in 2022 spending is probably enough to sign Kyzir White, one of Arden Key/Lorenzo Carter/Derek Barnett, and bring back Melvin Ingram.
If KC can pull off something like that before the draft, it is in fantastic shape. |

I’d give him that kind of a deal in a second. 5m guaranteed. 500k for every sack after the 5th sack of the season (first 5 sacks are free) An additional 350k for every sack after 10 sacks are reached. 200k for each TFL 750k for each forced or recovered fumble 150k in per active game day roster bonuses 750k per postseason sack So if he plays 15 games and gets 15 regular season sacks and 3 more in the postseason. His pay could get up there really quick. And most of it would be NLTBE. 2nd year team option for his full earned amount to also be a base salary for 2023. That’s the “bet on yourself” contract. |

The #Lions are signing CB Mike Hughes to a one-year, $3.5M contract, per source.
