Sadly this is probably more true than false. We'll see. The fact the Indians make twice is much is small potatoes compared to someone like the Dodgers, who just signed a TV contract that gives them probably close to $300M a year. And it has the potential to get worse as teams like the Phillies get new deals.
There was actually an article about all this in LA Weekly a few weeks ago. It touched on 1) the idea whether these huge contracts were sustainable given that more and more people were giving up on cable. They may be creating a bubble that's going to burst. And 2) how this creates an even wider gap between the rich and poor, and used the Royals and Dodgers as the example. It claimed the Royals got $20M from TV and $25M from revenue sharing. The Dodgers blow that out of the water before selling a single ticket. |
