Hey Lewdog, I have an idea: how would you like to lead a bourbon tasting for the Phoenix Meetup group? You are certainly getting into the Bourbon Connoisseur level.

Select maybe 5-7 to taste over the course of an evening and we can all meet at Bourbon and Bones in Old Town or a similar place and do a tasting with your narration.

Thoughts?

Which liquor store, if you don't mind me asking. TIA

Never been a big whiskey/bourbon/scotch drinker until last year. At least straight. Started off late fall last year just buying cheaper bottles & trying them. Been moving up to more expensive bottles over the year. This thread is full of things to try.

I actually bought 6 bottles last December. Randomly went into Gomers in Lenexa when they were stocking the shelf with a new shipment and bought them all.

This is bottle #3 since then.

Just got a gift basket from a production partner Tuesday that had a bottle of Remus Repeal Reserve III in it.

Cracked it open last night and it is...FANTASTIC. One of the best bourbons I've had in some time. Check out the mixture on the front of the bottle.

Definitely recommend if you come across it!

The family and I were in D.C. last weekend and the restaurant/bar we ate at was doing a 13 days of bourbon promotion. I had a glass of Old Rip Van Winkle's 10 year Bourbon. The pour was $14 and I wasn't familiar with it, so I googled it... Per google, it's $999.99 per 750 ml. bottle. So, yeah I had the pour and it was absolutely fantastic.

What's retail price of that these days? I saw a bottle of EC 18 on the shelf at a Total Wine a couple years ago and it was something like $140 or $160. I remember looking it up and seeing that that was actually a good price for it compared to the secondary pricing at most stores. I still passed on it. I later tried a pour of it somewhere and was glad I passed. It was solid - just not worth over $100 to me.

You're giving me way too much credit. I just like bourbon.

Maybe after we get through the holidays I can get out on a Saturday and join you guys somewhere. Work has been hellish lately so sometime in January will likely be best.

Scored a bottle of ORVW through a friend in Phoenix this morning - for RETAIL at Costco. According to his guy only Lexington and Phoenix got 10 bottles each. He’s not a big bourbon guy (scotch drinker), but I’m giving him a nice finders fee.

Look at this receipt.

I've seen sweet deals at Costco but never like that. I picked up the Makers Generations of Proof gift box that Lew mentioned earlier in this thread. It's well worth the $70 price. The private selection bottle in that set is my favorite one.

On the scotch side, I saw a box that had a bottle of Glenfiddich 14 year bourbon barrel and a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 year solera for $70. I should have bought it but I was too budy stocking up on Lagavulin 16 for $65.

The rest of us (just me) have a case of Eagle Rare in the cabinet and still stoop to trying $17.99 handle bottles of early Buffalo Trace made swill from Walmart under the name of Stedman's Select 3yr 86 proof. a bit of burn but light sour mash set in slightly charred oak.

Are you seriously humble bragging about a box of Eagle Rare? And not only that but then backing it up by humble bragging about drinking 3 year old rotgut that's being sold off by Sazerac for being off-profile and not making the cut for Buffalo Trace?

I'm confused.

I wouldn't call it that... WalMart ws approached with a deal to supply Sams with booze and made a decent low cost whiskey at a less than $20 price point. And yes for a light mixable whiskey I do like it. It's not special but it is a great value.

I don't buy whiskey ever that's over$70 and when I do it's Booker;s or Lagavulin but RE and I get along well. An open bottle is still soon empty but I don't cry when I drink a highly rated whiskey on a co-ed's budget.

Motorcycle farkles don't come cheap.

Tip for all of you.

Best bottle under $20. I can grab for $17.99 here. Evan Williams BIB, 100 proof. Stuff is great. I'd pick it up to have on hand at all times.

Let me know when you try it!

Strongside 12-20-2019 11:56 PM

Evan BIB is fantastic for the price.

Snagged a Basil Hayden 10 year today and am pretty disappointed. Not sure what I was expecting considering the other expressions are low - proof and, in my opinion, relatively bland...this is the same mash bill as the standard BH but the age doesn’t seem to do it any favors as far as the profile is concerned. At $30 it’d be a fine bourbon. At $65 it’s a ripoff.

Megatron96 12-21-2019 12:40 AM

Yes. Just now. Somethig my brother sent over called 'Yellowstone.' Seems pretty good right now.

cooper barrett 12-21-2019 01:50 AM

$13.99 and yes, a must have for the pantry. It comes in hot too for me but what can you buy in 1.75 that's better for the price. About 25-$26.99 if they sell handles.

For $12 less than William's Bond (1.75) this tastes good, almost too drinkable. Tomorrow evening I will serve Eagle Rare for a few rounds then introduce Stedman's and see what my friends think. Price is not the key. Value will be. Would be a great well but it's not wholesaled from what I know

I tend to agree with this sentiment, however, there are some whiskeys that are lesser quality and just aren’t very good. Considering that, I don’t think it’s snobbery to educate and continue to refine palates.

Just scored a bottled in bond/straight rye of Colonel Taylor - will be my secret Santa to myself!

Anybody ever done the Bourbon Trail? For those that don’t know, if your ever in KY, you can visit a lot of the distilleries on the Bourbon Trail. Old forester, makers, beam, heaven hill, Evan Williams, woodford, wild turkey, angels envy, four roses, etc. I’ve never done it but hear it’s a lot of fun.

I'm planning a trip for my 40th bday in a couple years. Im disappointed i missed the chance to stock up on heaven hill Bib which was only available in KY. I just bought the new 7 yr. Heaven Hill BiB for $40 and it tastes a lot like Evan Williams Bib which i could have got for $15. It's good just not worth $40.

It’s fun but completely bizarre that you can’t actually drink at all of the distilleries because they are in dry counties. You’d think the state would love additional revenue but I guess not.

None of the major ones are in dry counties. This might be true for some, but none that I know.

Edit: Just because a county is dry, it doesn’t mean that all of the municipalities in it are dry as well. None of the distilleries along the bourbon trail are dry, regardless of the county.

cooper barrett 12-21-2019 12:59 PM

I bought a bottle of Buffalo Trace had 3 drinks put it on shelf.

I'm still waiting for someone to request to try it.

I should test it with Stedman's 3 year old swill se if they taste similar.

cooper barrett 12-21-2019 01:07 PM

Jack Daniels was dry at one time Like when I was 13. Jack's home was used(the basement) under the radar for groups of big shots who wanted to drink past the sampling limits. I m sure this changed over the last 40 years.

"Lynchburg is located in a county that has remained dry since prohibition – thus no alcohol can be sold. The irony is not lost on anyone that the world’s most popular whiskey distillery is located in a dry county. The distillery operates several different tours, most of which offer samples of the whiskey."

I toured the place in 87, and you had to drive a county over for a tasting.

I won a bottle of Weller Full Proof at a raffle tonight. I know nothing about it. Anyone have any comments?

Tip for all of you.

Best bottle under $20. I can grab for $17.99 here. Evan Williams BIB, 100 proof. Stuff is great. I'd pick it up to have on hand at all times.

Saw this at Hy-Vee in Independence and picked up a bottle based on your recommendation. It is quite good and it was only $15.99. It will be a regular in my cabinet from now on given it's price and quality.

I do not have a lot of bourbon on hand at the moment, but I am enjoying this and a bottle of Pikesville Rye that a co-worker recommended. It is very good as well.

Thanks Lewdog!

Please report back.

I have a bottle of that Old Scout and really enjoy it. One I have to watch myself to not kill too much at one time since not easy to get another.

A buddy gave me this for Christmas. It’s good, but not nearly as mind blowing as I expected

Picked up a bottle of Maker's RC6 (2019 Limited Release) just a bit ago.

Will report back, but the reviews are pretty great for this one. Breaking Bourbon called it the best thing Maker's has released since their original Cask Strength...was surprised to see a bottle on the shelf in Gomer's Westport...excited to try it when I get home.

Yes it ok but I think you pay for the racehorse topper on the bottle. It's honestly should be a 30 buck bottle not 50 to 60. Get a bottle of Bakers and experience what a 60 dollar bottle should be.

The old scout is good, but overpriced. Before it was named whisky of the year by whisky advocate, the dickel 13 year bottled in bond for $35 was just as good if not better than the old scout (makes sense since the old scout is dickel juice as well). After winning best of the year, it might be hard to find the dickel 13 year BiB now. Luckily, I bought 3 bottles before the win.

Add a bottle of Oban 16 to your scotch stock.

Nice collection of bottles.

Do you mean Oban 14 or Oban 18?

There has only been one Oban 16 bottling that I know of that was finished in sherry casks and runs around 2k.

Old Scouts reasonably priced here bout 30 bucks a bottle and have found it sale priced at Harrys for 25.00.
