Injury Update: KC Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney Hurt in First Day of Training Camp

On Sunday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs took the field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO for their first full-team practice that was open to fans and the general public in attendance. While there were many positive standouts from camp workouts, there was also a bit of bad news on the injury front.

According to head coach Andy Reid, wide receiver Kadarius Toney tweaked his knee and had an early exit from practice.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Wanya Morris (hamstring) and Tershawn Wharton (knee) didn’t practice today, per Coach Reid.<br><br>Kadarius Toney “tweaked his knee” and left practice early, per Coach.</p>&mdash; Matt McMullen (@KCChiefs_Matt) <a href="https://twitter.com/KCChiefs_Matt/status/1683139446147825665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 23, 2023</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Toney, who was acquired near last year's trade deadline in a surprising swap with the New York Giants, hauled in 16 passes for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns in nine regular-season games as a Chief. With that said, he was on the field for just 23% of the team's available offensive snaps in those games and didn't always make the most consistent impression when active. Additionally, the 2021 first-round pick dealt with lower-body injuries that limited both his playing time and, in turn, his effectiveness despite him flashing some of his potential multiple times.

During the Chiefs' early 2023 playoff run, Toney recorded seven catches for 50 yards and ran the ball once for 14 yards. Over the course of three postseason games, the 24-year-old also returned six punts. One of them was a key run-back in Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles, helping Kansas City get in position to pull away and ultimately secure a victory.

Toney wasn't the only member of the Chiefs' roster to deal with something injury-related. Reid said neither offensive tackle Wanya Morris (hamstring) nor defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (knee) practiced with the team on Sunday. Morris was at practice but didn't have a helmet on, and Wharton remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL suffered early in the 2022 campaign.

It's going to be fine, and this season is going to be a lot of fun.

Despite the brilliance of VB and Reid, the salary cap is a thing and in the NFL the margin for success can be short and SB windows are never huge.

So with Toney already doing Toney things, I don't think commenting on the WR situation on a football thread is too over the top.

It isn't. There is a whole camp of posters who think we should not be allowed to discuss Chiefs football unless it is only player worship.

Every play I see of Rice he looks like a true#1 WR.

I can't believe I didn't like that pick at first. He really does look like Hopkins

It’s the siren song of training camp. While he is beating some good DBs, it’s probably just a tease. The DBs are Super Bowl champs and know the season is a marathon. Guys like Rice are treating each rep like it’s a sprint.

Toney got hurt on the first day? ****. I really like him as a player but the dude just doesn't have the durability.

Isn't it weird how it's always the same ****ing idiots that find something to bitch about? Year after year and now we have multiple super bowl rings, 5 straight AFCCG appearances, but still the same stupid ****ing idiots are finding some reason to piss and moan. You'd think this recent run and the fact that we have Patrick ****ing Mahomes as our QB would allow some leeway from the bitching, especially the bitching during the off-season and training camp. We had people bitching before TC even started. Idiots that think they know more than Andy Reid and Brett Veach about this team.

An injury occurs, sure it's a guy that most expect to get injured, but he hasn't missed any time this season. So what do some people do? Bitch and moan about the WRs, because a guy tweaked his knee on the first day of training camp. Isn't it exhausting always finding a reason to whine? Can these pussies find any enjoyment or does bitching and moaning get you all off better than winning?

I've always wondered if some players are just not as willing to play through an injury as others will? It seems some guys will have a relatively minor injury and they don't play because of it, but is it because that player is scared that he will injured himself worse or just not able to push through the pain? Patrick Mahomes has to be forced to sit out no matter what hurts, but then some guys are just gonna sit with even the most minor injury.

I know that some guys are injury prone, but I wonder if sometimes that's because they are just not willing to play through an injury.

It’s literally day one of TC. Come back and run around with your hair on fire when the 53 is set and he is on IR. Even then as much as I’d love Toney to stay healthy all year we have plenty of WRs who are capable.

Sassy Squatch 07-23-2023 05:29 PM

At the rate Toney is going I'd put him in a Zorbee and only break him out in case of emergency or games with playoff implications LMAO

6’1” 205 with an elite 41” vert and elite 10yd and 20yd splits. Mahomes has never had a guy like that. A true “throw it up and let him get it” explosive jump ball type of guy. If he gets the drops thing worked out - and guys that are smart and work hard usually do (ie Tony G) - he could be special.

Pair him with a precision route-runner with great hands like you have in Skyy potentially, and that could be a nice rookie contract combo for the next 3 seasons.
