Wait - footwear companies target basketball?

This is brand new information...

Bowser 01-02-2014 11:16 AM

And all that money still can't buy the attention or glory that football brings.

Bowser 01-02-2014 11:18 AM

So how many McDonald's All Americans can 6.1 million buy, anyway?

Saul Good 01-02-2014 11:19 AM

The shit that Kansas fans are clinging to is hysterical.

A lot, apparently, since we just re-load every year on them. FYI for those too lazy to look it up, Mizzou clocks in at 2.3M from Nike.

So you admit that Kansas pays its basketball recruits?

People not thinking Basketball is a big time sport is pretty funny.

If you click on Mizzou's report, you can see that Nike offers them a $15K bonus for making a BCS game and $40K for winning the title. They should've just made it 17.3 trillion instead, what difference would it make?

Oh it is, but just not compared to football, which is what we've pointed out all along. Everyone pretty much accepts that except these two delusional KU fans.

When the ad revenue for college basketball is only eclipsed by the super bowl it really leaves no discussion as to what is the bigger sport.

I think the main problem with why Mizzou is such a nonexistent draw nationally is that they really are pretty indistinguishable from other college programs.

The name "Tigers" alone simply doesn't work when even within your own conference there are multiple other programs which have logged so much more success with the same name.

A complete overhaul of the color scheme, mascot, and branding could potentially do wonders for the school.

RustShack 01-02-2014 11:34 AM

Football and basketball are the top two period. Sure football generally makes a lot more, but they both deserve to be in the discussion.

And you can't fault Kansas fans, basketball being better than football is all their school knows.

You don't think it's easy to sell athletic gear splashed in a "black & baby poop yellow" motif?

Saul Good 01-02-2014 11:46 AM

Tire fire of a conference you've spent the last two years pimping gets exposed yet again? Break out apparel smack.

This list was just released, 50 most watched non-NFL sports events of 2013.

Yes the BCS NCG was number one but there are two college basketball games before you hit the 2nd most watched college football game. It's an even split. Amazing how so many on this board don't get it.

The 50 Most-Watched Sporting Events of 2013

* Note: List does not include Tuesday’s (Dec. 31) bowl games. As the Peach Bowl is typically a strong performer, it may do well enough to crack the top 50.

I thought the entire college football season was a de facto playoff.

Or you're choosing to not spout that this week?

What if things had gone differently?

What if Mizzou and aTm had stayed in the Big 12? What if the SEC, instead of taking aTm and Mizzou in order to expand their footprint and get into Texas, had taken West Virginia and TCU? Would the Big 12 be the best football conference of 2013?

Baylor
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma
Tech
KSU
Texas
Iowa State
Kansas

Vs

Georgia
Vanderbilt

I give the nod to the Big 12 there...

Colorado, Maryland, and Syracuse are football schools? Wasn't the Big East movement all basketball related?

They are footPrint schools...who left to go to better football conferences at the expense of their basketball programs.

2 months of basketball season is almost completely irrelevant. The 1 and done rule makes the game something of a farce in many instances and the hand-checking rules are now making the actual gameplay even worse.

I enjoy college basketball a little bit less every year. There's no question that it's still a major sport, but for me, there's just so little of it that's actually worth watching.

I hope the folks in charge of college football don't go too crazy with the playoffs. If it becomes a 32 team tournament, the regular season will be devalued to the point that it will damage the product, IMO.

Jim Boeheim does

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim works at a basketball school and is among the many coming to grips with the fact that, well, basketball doesn't matter when it comes to conference realignment.

He had this to say about the issue last week on Lexy:
"It's really that crazy. Driven by football. Football all the way. And it's ironic that basketball raises 90 percent of the money for the NCAA, and football's making all these decisions. It's amazing really when you think about it."
Yes, it's true the NCAA tournament makes gobs of cash, but the NCAA is staying out of the expansion issue. So leave it to football, the cash cow for its membership institutions, to be the root of all realignment.

Muschamp has two things he needs to focus on in spring practice: 1, blocking guys from the other team instead of yours. 2, tackling guys from the other team instead of yours.

That's hilarious. Can you imagine Alabama moving to the AAC with Saban begging to stay in the SEC?

Jim Boeheim is one of the most accomplished coaches in history...and his objections were "duly noted".

Things he doesn't need to worry about:
1. Being one of the worst BCS-division teams in the country.
2. Buying new goalposts after his first conference win in years.
3.

This picture is full of awesome. The Gator at the top does his job clocking two dudes at once. Meanwhile, Big Jim is over there tackling his own teammate:

The truly amazing part about that play is that Florida STILL almost scored. How in the hell is that even possible?

That's absolutely hilarious.
But you're the guy standing in the ruins of a burned down house making fun of your neighbor because his toast is burnt.

Prison Bitch 01-02-2014 12:50 PM

I don't think the Florida fans consider 4-8 with a home loss to Georgia Southern (their first ever vs an FBS school) as merely "burnt toast".

Right. The Big 10 took Nebraska because of their basketball program. The SEC only took Mizzou and aTm because of basketball. The Pac-12 took CU and Utah because of their elite basketball programs and almost took UT and OU for the same reason. The Big 12 took WVU and TCU because of basketball and fought to try and get ND for the same reason. I could keep going but I think I made the point. You as usual make an untrue stupid statement.

Florida is still Florida. They had a once-every-30-years season this year, but they are going to be just fine. Don't worry your head about them.

Probably not. Though I think there is only a few (2-4) basketball programs that have that kind of power, KU and Duke being two off the top of my head.

In Muschamp's defense, his defenders did have flashes of greatness proving they could be hard-hitting at times:

Some teams, once in a generation, have a rough year.
Others, once in a generation, win more games than their talent should.

Yeah, I doubt a KU fan should be talking shit on Florida in either sport.

Oh, shit.

Who in their right minds takes someone in a wheelchair down to the sidelines and just lets them fend for themselves?

Prison Bitch 01-02-2014 01:01 PM

Florida is the only school in the nation that practices with mannequins in wheelchairs instead of tackling sleds. The defender was only doing what he was taught.

Syracuse
Maryland
Missouri
Texas A&M
TCU
West Virginia
Nebraska
Rutgers
Colorado
Utah
Pittsburgh

Some quality programs on that list but far from elite.

Bambi 01-02-2014 01:23 PM

As far as the KU vs UF athletics comparison seemingly going on here I will admit that Florida's athletic program is better than KU's.

UF: NCAA Tournament Champion, BCS National Championship Game Winner

KU: NCAA Tournament Champion, BCS Game Winner

Florida is better. There's no denying it.

The bigger question here is why is Charlie Weis's top recruit sitting on the sideline of a Florida game...

Saul Good 01-02-2014 02:14 PM

South Carolina (#3/4 SEC) vs. Wisconsin (#3 Big Ten)

Cotton:
Missouri (#3/4 SEC) vs. Oklahoma State (#3 Big 12)

Outback:
LSU (#5 SEC) vs Iowa (#4 Big Ten)

Chick-Fil-A:
Texas A&M (#6 SEC) vs Duke (#3 ACC)

Gator:
Georgia (#7 SEC) vs Nebraska (#5 Big Ten)

You can see the progress being made here, as he tackles the cripple rather than his own teammate.

I think the bowls pairings for the SEC are pretty fair this year. I'm not sure what the guy was talking about yesterday.

Kansas players are stuck with trying to tackle dead bodies at funeral homes. Once they can accomplish that I heard Weis will be taking the team to the special Olympics for more intensive practices.

The average pairing so far has been the SEC 6.8 versus the other conference's 3.7 and the SEC is 5-1.

Yes but you're including ALL the conferences... Rice, etc

Do that with the other qualifying conferences and the average is closer.

Who is the "etc"?

Rice is the only one, and the SEC #10 beat them 44-7. BCS conference or not, when the SEC 10 scores 44 straight points against a conference champion, that's a statement.

Because their TE dropped 2 catches that would've won the game for them.

Honestly, I've generally been a fan of Richt and despise Pelini, but Pelini out-coached the hell out of Richt merely by staying out of his own way.

Mark Richt did everything in his power to lose that game and the Huskers damn near wouldn't let him do it. Seeing more of him these last couple of years kinda gives me an understanding of why so many GA fans dislike him.
