So as to not shock your palate by going too big too quick, stick with some other Flanders Reds or maybe a Flanders Oud Bruin, like Petrus Aged Pale, or, if you can find it locally, Odell's The Meddler. The Oud Bruins are typically not as fruity. They will be a bit more sour and will typically show a bit more oak in the flavor profile. I can usually find both of these here in Lee's Summit pretty easily.
A lot of "American Wild Ales" will also have some element of sourness, though the definition for the category is VERY broad. |

I went back to the store to pick up more, and noticed at was 2012. Still tasty. Picked up a bottle of Rye-on-Rye as well. |
Pleasant surprises at Hy-Vee... hadn't seen any of these around before today.

Just finished off Sam Adams Stony Brook Red. It's pretty nice. Similar to the Dutchesse, not not quite as good.

Drinking a 2010 bottle of Boulevard Harvest Dance. That beer is tremendous fresh, and only gets worse with age, I'm discovering. Not that this bottle is bad, but the malt bill isn't gaining enough to offset the loss of Harvest Dance's brilliant hop profile.

Oh man, my brother in law got me a 750 ml of Drie Fonteinen Scharbeekse Kriek for Christmas. Yum!

I used to think I was a pretty heavy beer snob. I thought I was the snobbiest of the snobby beer snobs on this site. But I have to admit I don't even have the slightest idea what a Dire Fountain Starbucks Keokuk is. Not the foggiest clue.
|
You'll just have to step up your snobbishness in the future. Dire Fountain rules.
|
Found a few bottles of BCBCS in Des Moines yesterday - score. Had no luck up in the Cities. Wish I could find some Cherry Rye...
Going to make some awesome Christmas gifts for a few close friends... |
I'm hoping to snag a Coffee or Cherry when I get up to Chicago soon....
|
Drank 2011 version of Saison Brett. Had bought 2 that year and cellared one . Well worth the wait.
|
Cracked into my Bourbon County Stout last night and wow. The guy at the liquor store told me it was "big" and I know exactly what he was talking about now.
While I absolutely loved the thick almost oily mouth feel and the huge richness, the "alcohol" flavor wasn't expected. I'm not a hard liquor drinker and I just found the strong notes of Bourbon to be a little much (yes Iunderstand it's aged in Bourbon barrels but still). I love every aspect of this beer except this one. I didn't expect this much bourbon flavor. okay...now you can tell me what a dumbass I am. LMAO |
They need to be aged. The booziness wears off a bit over time. I drank a 2009 bottle this year and found the bourbony flavor had changed to more of a molasses flavor. Very good and it had mellowed quite nicely.

On that note, I had a bottle of Dogfish pumpkin ale that sat in the fridge for a month or so and while I wasn't impressed with it at all when fresh...it had more pumpkin flavor after it sat. |
Just keep them some place cool and dark. I think that the BCS bottles say they're good for up to 5 years of aging in the bottle. They're probably fine for more, but I've never had one older than 3-4 years before.
I really only age imperial stouts, barley wines, sours, wild ales and lambics. Any IPAish beer isn't a good candidate for aging, as the hops will fade out of the flavor profile over time. There are obviously some exceptions to that rule, but I don't age Hopslam, Sculpin or Pliny The Elder. Those babies are meant to be drank while fresh. |
People are going to hate me.
At this point in time I'm not a huge fan of Tank 7. Commence jizzles beat down. |
Don't like the earthy notes?

I love the beer at first sip -- it is the after taste that gets me. Just not a fan of that right now. |

They will definitely change for the better with a little bit of age on them. Just stash them away and forget about them until next year. Then, next year, you can try a fresh one and an aged one side by side.
|
I'm drinking some really Shitty beer right now, don't try it.
|
Found Rye on Rye on tap tonight. That is nectar of the gods and frankly, I believe that descriptor is overused.
|
Hard to take it easy on those; they drink soooo smooth.
|
Barley's Brewhaus in Overland Park is going to have the only keg of La Folie in KS this Friday at 5 PM.
It's somewhere between a sour/wild ale and a Flanders Oud Bruin. VERY sour. It'll be a hoot! |
Found Boulevard's Double Wide IPA here in ATL, both in bottle and at a burger joint on tap.

That used to be my favorite beer. It has since been bumped to #2 by Firestone walker's Double Jack. If you are a fan of DIPAs, you need to try it! Doublewide is gooooood stuff; definitely wins "best label" award in my book. |
Make sure to grab a sixer of Hopslam when it comes out this year. Very good DIPA.
|
Picked up a few to try today.
Samuel Smiths Chocolate Stout Samuel Adams Merry Mischief Big John Stout Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout |
|
So how much is craft beer where you guys are at? It's ****ing expensive here in Boston. Like a 4 pack of Blvd Double Wide IPA is freaking $13. Usually a 6 or 4 pack costs around $10. Pints of craft beer ranges from $6-15, depending on the beer of course. Something common like Sam Adams costs about $10 for a 6 pack.
Hell a 6 pack of miller ****ing lite costs $8. |
A four pack of Double Wide will run you anywhere from $9 to $11 around KC.
|
drinking 1554 from the new belgium brewing company tonight...........so delicious!

Don't invite Phobia over to share that stuff. The paint just might come off the walls.

I had to get on a list last year just to get a six pack. if you find a place in the KC area that allows you to buy as much as you want....LET ME KNOW! or at the very least buy a case for yourself. honestly....IPA's just don't do it for me.....but Hopslam is second best beer I've ever had. and my big ass has had a lot of different beers (plates on the wall at the saucer :thumb:) #1 BBQ #2 Hopslam |
Oh, I'll be able to get Hopslam. I don't ever sweat finding beers. If I don't get six packs myself, others help me out or I can just drink it on tap, which is best anyway.
I have some good relationships with liquor store employees around town. |

Also, though Hopslam is highly sought after, I'm a little more excited this year about Bell's releasing their Black Note stout in 4 packs and KC will actually see some of it.

Had a Founders 2011 Kentucky Breakfast Stout at Waldo Pizza tonight. Wow. So, so delicious.
|
Had Mothers Holy Mole tonight. Ummmm, pass.
|
Ska's Mole Stout has been the only mole beer that I've liked in a long time.
|
Sorry if these have been mentioned before. If you're talking about beers to try, Great Lakes has some ridiculously good ones. The Christmas Ale is usually in limited stock and people go nuts about it, especially if you sprinkle a little cinnamon on it.
|
Went to the Beir Station last night in Waldo. Tried the Green Flash Imperial IPA, was delicious. It's a brewery from San Diego, maybe Buck can tell us more about it, I haven't heard of it.
But the Beir Station, it's half bar, half liquor store. They have a wall of coolers, with a great selection, actually great doesn't even do it justice. If you're a beer lover, this place was made for you. You can buy 6 packs or single bottles, you can take them with you or take them to the bar and they pour it for you. Forgive me if it's not a new concept, but I was pretty blown away by the place. Just overrun with hipsters though, so be warned. |
They poached the beer manager from Royal Liquors, Brad. Really good beer selection, especially on their taps.
Green Flash has some very fine beers; their Rayon Vert is one of my favorites. |
Have a Rasputin recipe fermenting in the basement - with some coffee added and also some lactose. More of a Rasputin coffee milk stout. OG = 1.094
|
Oh, also, tried the Lugene milk chocolate stout by Odell last night. Delicious.
|
so much great beer out there
is there a BBQ thread in here somewhere? you guys are the experts so i'm thinking i can learn something |

Just popped a Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye for the MU game. Grabbed some Lagunitas Sucks while I was at the store.
Hopslam hits the shelf on Friday at my store. |
Got some Lagunitas Sucks today as well. It doesn't suck.

For you Iowa guys, you should seek out some Toppling Goliath - they make some great beers, particularly IPAs. The Golden Nugget and Pseudo Sue are both great...
|
If you wanted HopSlam and were planning on getting it from HyVee in Blue Springs, don't try. I got it all. Bwahahahahahaha!!!1!!11
|
Got my Hopslam at Gomer's South. They got 34 cases and said it won't last the day.
